I played the game for about 30 min each day for the past couple of weeks and I can proudly say I'm still on the first palace lol.

I hate to say it, but thank goodness for accessibility because I don't have the time to sink into really difficult games like I used to anymore.

I hope to beat it before skyward sword comes out :|

I'm still trying to beat the second palace. Is really hard and it would be just great to have the save state function that the GB games have Anyway, I'm not putting that much effort actually but I would like to finish it some day :)

I haven't even gotten past the first area yet. It says I need a candle before I can move on, but I have no idea where it is and I've looked everywhere.

I think it's to the north-east of where you begin. And to answer the topic, no. I don't think that will ever happen. I like the game, but the enemies are a-holes.

It's the first time I've beat it, I also have it with the Collector's Edition for the GC but didn't play it much so I never finished it.

The game is impossible. And it's not even fun. I'm glad I have it, but only for collective purposes (I'm trying to own all the Zelda games... I still don't have A Link to the Past [gonna get it on VC], Link's Awakening [eShop], Minish Cap [hoping it's one the Ambassador games], Oracle of Age/Seasons [hoping it comes to the eShop some day] and Four Swords Adventures [this one will be hard to get]).

I'm gonna disrupt the thread here, because I don't want to make a whole new thread just for one silly question- in the original Legend of Zelda, dungeon 5, there's a room full of blue knights and a staircase behind blocks, but none of the blocks will move until I've cleared the room. Can anyone fill me in on how the hell I'm supposed to kill all these damn blue knights? I've seriously died 28 times in that one room!

Do you mean -how do you kill them in general? (hit them away from their shield...like in the back) -or how do you kill that many at once? (skill, memorizing patterns, etc)

Not meant to be mean in any way, but... Be better. Older games (IMO) were more difficult. They required you to both 'be better' and watch/memorize It has been many, many years since I played, but I still remember working to bet behind them to stab 'em (that doesn't sound quite right >_> ). Also, there are more difficult ones to come (the red version)...just an FYI Use the blocks as cover and wait for them to walk by and then stab them in the back

If you are really having the much trouble, then just get your guy super stacked up before the fight. Be at full health and have the red potion. Also buy the blue ring if you have not done so yet. Lastly, if you are still having trouble, make sure you have the best sword of the game, because I am pretty sure it is possible to have it in level 5.

If you're having trouble you should try grinding up some levels. It is a very difficult game though.

Ugh! Still stuck on the approach up to the final palace. I have been using a FAQ to make my life easier, not that it makes the game easy by any means. The FAQ said that once you got to the final palace, you restarded there at the beginning of the game so I actually did get there once, died pretty soon after and selected save and closed my 3DS. I select my save the next time I open it and I am back at the beggining! Gah! I have not been able to get back since. I don't mind the tough enemies--esp. since most of them aren't that tough once you level up and get some practice in--but the platforming elements in this game are awful! You jump and an enemy from off the screen will fly in and knock you in lava. What is that?

Anyone know if you select continue in the final palace if you start again in the final palace or is my FAQ just wrong? I hate to say it but I think I am just going to give up if I have to keep redoing the uber-annoying approach to the final palace.

Well, I finally got to answer my own question today. If you die in the final palace and select continue, you get to restart on the final palace and not at the beginning of the game. Thankfully, on the virtual console, that option is really easy. I just always selected save so I did not get out of the habit when I play GB/GBA Zelda games. I thought I might mention it so other people don't make the same mistake I did. It looks like I'll wind up beating this after all.

How on earth did I had the pateince to deal w/ this as a kid?

Yeah, I completed it like a week or two ago. It's a great game, but the difficulty does diminish it's quality. Like, I was having loads of fun with it but towards the end in the Great Palace and the journey to it it just got frustrating. The second last boss and the birdknights are horrible

I finished it on the GC bonus disc several years ago. I've been playing through it on the 3DS off and on.... pretty sure I'm past the third or fourth dungeon.

It's not a game for anyone who lacks patience. A lot of the enemies simply require waiting, timing, and lots of hits to kill, so anyone who wants to just rush through is going to fail miserably. It also requires a bit of grinding since you lose all XP when you have a game over. Leveling up is essential to progress.

You do if you save or turn the system off. You actually start all the way at the beginning but there really aren't any tough parts until you get to Death Mountain. Because this is VC though you can just keep selecting continue indefinitely w/o turning the system off and never have to redo Death Mountain once you've gotten to the final palace, which is about the only thing in the game design that might be described as merciful.

I really didn't think the game was THAT hard. Yes, I did beat it on my 3DS and I felt it was hardest when trying to make it to Ganon's Palace and Ganon's Palace. Thank God they cut you a break and let you respawn at the beginning of it if you Game Over.

Just finished it last night! The Great Palace is actually not that hard. There is a cheap way to beat Dark Link at the end and some tricks to beating some of those jumping knight things in certain places. If you can get through w/ a life to spare, the final boss isn't that hard w/ full life and magic. The end is pretty unsatisfying for how much trouble it is to get there. I suppose that is the era...

Is there anything to the second quest of this?

Back then we had Nintendo Power. I did use a FAQ though. Took me about twelve hours all together, whcih actually makes it the second most played game on my 3DS, which surprised me when I looked. It's only at the Great Palace that you restart at the palace. The rest you restart at the beginning in front of your poor, sleeping Zelda.

Right now I am trying to beat the original one, which I've played may more times, w/o looking anything up. So far so good but I'm only on level three. I have played every 2D Zelda except Minnish Cap and on every single one there is some ridiculously unobvious place to look for some critical item or another and I almost always wind up looking something up. What I don't do is use a FAQ to find every last heart conatainer. If I'm a few hearts short when it comes time to fight Ganon, I just tough it out.

I never really found a strategy that worked so I just sort of hacked away at him and beat him after a few tries. I had less than one square of life left--and that's after casting shield and reflect. That is why I used the cheap method on Dark Link. I'd probably have given it a go to beat him for real but for I can't seem to get through the palace w/o losing at least one life along the way and that makes it pretty tedious. Perhaps if the NES VC provided save states, I might spend some time trying but it does not.

I actually died out surprisingly few times compared to how I usually do in Zelda games, somewhere under thirty. Last time I played Link's Awakening, for example, I died over a hundred times. I think I've probably died over twenty times in the first one so far and I'm still pretty near the beggining. Both of these games are much less frustrating, however.

speaking of links awekening i beat it for the first time yesterday....not sure i died 100 times though...maybe like 30 :P

its cool 3ds has save state for gameboy but not for nes games :( ..nes games just have the pause(suspend) feature like on wii..

I think save states are planned for the NES VC for once its released to the general public. They are kind of a mixed blessing in my opinion. They make the games a lot quicker to get through but you miss out on the old school toughness. They are great if you are getting sick of the game and just want to see the ending but it does take away some of the satisfaction of beating the thing. I wouldn't mind one for Link's Awakening though as there's a special ending if you don't die ever, I think.

That game is great, by the way, I have the original and the DX carts for GB/GBC. I think it is my second favorite 2D Zelda, my favorite being Oracle of Ages. Hopefully they'll get the Oracle games on the VC. Or is the VC only for Game Boy and not Game Boy Color?

Link's Awakening is the GBC version, but as of now it's the only GBC game on the VC.

I'm hoping for the Oracle games, too. I loved them both but only played each of them once. I tried playing one of them on my GBA last year, but the lack of backlighting killed it for me, so I tried playing on my GB Player and it just didn't feel right to play it on a TV. The 3DS VC is the best option, and I have a feeling that a lot of people never got to play those games.

Link's Awakening was one of the Game Boy Color games which was forward compatable w/ regular Game Boys. The Oracle games were straight Game Boy Color games. I am not sure what the difference is but I know GBC had a faster processor so I'm wondering if that means they wouldn't require a different/modified VC... Not that I should even speculate on such things. The Oracle games were also devloped by Capcom rather than Nintendo so who knows. I am hopeful but I'm not expecting anything.

Yes. On my NES and on my GBA though. maybe it was because I had nothing else to do with my childhood, but I even made maps for it and such. Also as I read the thread I realized a few people think Death Mountain is near the end of the game? That is incorrect. Death mountain is actually the series of caves you have to go through to get to the hammer. you will also notice a complete replica of the original Zelda overworld down there - thus giving a sense of scale to the Zelda 2 game. To those with the huevos to keep playing I applaud you. Just remember to get the potions when you enter castles (well after the first) and you can even quick level using the same mechanic once you hit palace 3 or so. Ah, good stuff. I'm going to replay it again now.
