Heroes of Ruin is a classic dungeon crawler, with some new surprises, available exclusively on Nintendo 3DS. This action adventure game with RPG elements from Square Enix and n-Space Inc. has been custom-made for Nintendo 3DS and allows you to adventure solo, or play locally and online for an electrifying multiplayer experience.

Your adventure takes you to the wild places of the world, where you'll come into contact with a diverse variety of creatures, with a range of fighting styles and skills. From elegant, evasive fencers, to full-on hulking brutes.

On top of the main quests which move the story on, there are plentiful side quests to complete. Taking these on can garner you useful items or additional gold as rewards - and what merc doesn't like gold?

During your adventures you'll notice that the world itself is a dynamic place, meaning you'll discover original layouts, new routes through the environment, and experience novel enemy encounters every time you play. You can venture forth solo or team up with friends as a party of up to four adventurers for drop-in/drop-out cooperative play, using the microphone to voice chat in real-time with your fellow mercenaries to devise strategies.

When playing online, you can adventure with those registered on your friends list, or choose to be matched up with random strangers. Playing with friends is known as forming an "Alliance" and has some interesting effects in-game: not only will you receive bonuses by playing with friends, but these bonuses will steadily improve if you continue to play together!

Heroes of Ruin takes advantage of the features of Nintendo 3DS to offer players, in addition to stereoscopic 3D visuals, a stream of exciting new content without them even having to lift a finger. For a full year after the launch of the game, daily challenges will be delivered to your system, further extending your adventure and providing valuable ways to gain experience. The Trader's Network, on the other hand, allows you to trade items with other players via StreetPass, so you can unlock valuable new weapons, armour and items while you're on the go.

On top of all this, Square Enix have their own official Heroes of Ruin website, where you'll find loads of news, info, a forum and more. At the website you can create a profile which you can link to your copy of the game for additional fun!

Features:

* Play on your own, or in a party including up to three others, locally or online

* Supports online Voice Chat for friends and random players

* Choose from four character classes and customise your appearance to make your character truly unique

* Thousands of items to find for each character class

* Custom-built for Nintendo 3DS, with stereoscopic 3D graphics and StreetPass functionality

* Dynamic environments offer new layouts and experiences each time you play

~Story of Ruin~
heroes_of_ruin_conceptart_PpqgR.jpg
(Above: Not every location is shown)
"The war raged for tens of years until powerful leaders of men stepped forth from the fray, these Lords established a fragile peace, keeping the threat of disharmony in check. When Lord Atraxis, founder of the city of Nexus, is struck ill by a terrible curse, the precarious balance looks to shift back towards bloodshed. A call is sent out across the walled city, and the world, promising immeasurably grand rewards to any who can find a cure to the sickness.

Among the dens of the city, where the hirelings and sell-swords dwell, an offer like that is something to be carefully considered, and from the far corners of the world emerge four mercenaries to form an uneasy, and terrifically deadly, alliance. They will venture beyond the crumbling walls of the bastion city to the twisted world outside, fraught with danger and filled with strange creatures. These mercenary heroes will hunt down the evil behind the curse, and together, end it forever."
~The Heroes of Nexus~

To begin your journey, you must choose from four distinct character types. Once your character type is chosen, you can customise your appearance straight away for a personal touch. Over the course of your adventures your character will develop based on your individual choices - and your armour, fighting style, abilities, and more will evolve to become entirely unique.

Gunslinger
heroes_of_ruin_conceptart_ADACr.jpg

A reformed criminal with a particularly shady past. Don't ask too many questions about the enormous debt that he owes, or whom he owes. He prefers to keep his distance from foes, fights evasively and commands the use of bombs and pistols.

Vindicator
heroes_of_ruin_conceptart_u77rW.jpg

Fallen from grace in the eyes of his order, the Vindicator is a knight seeking redemption. He must make penance, desires only justice, and lays waste to his enemies with a mighty sword. His powers of healing and battlefield control help him to protect his allies in the heat of combat.

Alchitect
heroes_of_ruin_conceptart_HLgJo.jpg

Driven by the burning desire to take her place as the most powerful spell-caster in the land, this student of magic from a faraway academy utilises cunning, strategy and ruinously destructive spells to bewilder and decimate groups of enemies.

Savage
heroes_of_ruin_conceptart_qkO0t.jpg

This enormous brute with bladed fists has been cast out from his tribe, and seeks power enough to return to his people in a blaze of irrefutable glory. His speed and might make him the perfect warrior to put on the front line in any battle.

~Heroes of Ruin Reviews~

IGN - 7/10:

"It's more of a short-term investment than some might be expecting, then, but while you're caught in its irresistible loot cycle, you'll probably find it very hard to put down." - (Full Review)

Nintendo Life - 8/10:

"Heroes of Ruin does have a few rough edges and areas where greater refinement would have been welcome, but they don't detract from an accomplished effort on 3DS. A short campaign is offset by four separate characters to develop, and the experience feels entirely suitable for a fully-tooled handheld action RPG.

It's the online structure that truly raises the bar for the platform; crawling through dungeons is a lot more fun with others to share the glory, and the inclusion of voice chat in particular is a highlight. In many respects this is a by-the-numbers title, but the end result does bear the resemblance of a masterpiece, even if it can't quite survive the closest of inspection." - (Full Review)

Eurogamer - 7/10:

"As it stands, it's a pity more thought wasn't given to creating a decent challenge that suits different approaches. But while it may be more short-lived that it could have been, it's excellent fun while it lasts. The true strength of Heroes of Ruin is in the pleasing flexibility of the online experience - and it's a model Nintendo itself could learn a few things from." - (Full Review)

Edge Magazine - 6/10:

"Fortunately, however, despite its reheated fantasy trappings and formulaic design principles, it also remains surprisingly easy to get hooked on the steady dopamine hit of each fresh loot acquisition and the rhythm of the game's combat pulse." - (Full Review)

NintendoWorldReport - 8/10:

"Heroes of Ruin is no graphical marvel, but its visuals deserve some praise. The world in which you play is large, and each area is designed well. The 3D is sometimes too much of a strain for me over long periods, but it is also something I enjoyed during play. The one element of the game's presentation that does stand out is its sound design. Each song is beautiful and a genuine pleasure to listen to; I often sat and listened to the song playing on the home menu because I enjoyed it so much.

Heroes of Ruin is a fantastic game hindered by a few issues. However, with those cast aside, monster-bashing fun is in store for all who play. A cooperative online game on a Nintendo system is not something you would normally see, especially on a handheld, but n-Space delivered such an experience well. I can't wait to go back and try out another class to venture further into the game's world by myself or with friends." - (Full Review)

Pocket Gamer UK - 9/10:

"This is true online gaming, and it's on a Nintendo console. If you're into RPGs, Heroes of Ruin should be your very next purchase. Even if you're not, you should pick the game up to show publishers that this is the direction we want the 3DS to take. Magnificent and essential." - (Full Review)

Official Nintendo Magazine UK - 80/100:

"All of the characters feel powerful and cool, the combat is fun and it's massively addictive. Heroes Of Ruin has far rougher edges than most Square-Enix fans will be used to, but the mechanics that actually matter are fantastic. Overlook the iffy execution, and Heroes Of Ruin is a treat." - (Full Review)

NZGamer - 8.9/10:

"If it was possible to exceed "10" for value, rest assured Heroes of Ruin would earn itself top score - no matter the theoretical maximum. If you like loot-em-ups, and you like the idea of having one in your pocket, you'll be hard pressed to find anything better than this. Yes, there's room for improvement (particularly in the presentation department), but Heroes of Ruin is more than just a building block towards whatever's next; it's a brilliant, addictive, compelling experience in its own right. Highly recommended." - (Full Review)

What are your thoughts on Heroes of Ruin?

I've been tracking this game since it was announced and with each new piece of information I looked forward to it more and more, but I never thought it was going to be anything mind blowingly awesome. I just thought it would be a good fun multiplayer handheld game with some nice features, and so far it looks like it has lived up to that expectation. The demo left me wanting more, so I'm likely going to pick up a copy before the end of this month.

My friend code is in my signature, if any of you want an extra hero to quest with just let me know. I might not use voice chat much though.

I've heard that it's main problem is that it's not long enough, but I think I'll buy it anyway and play it to it's fullest.

I thought the demo was pretty good, and yes it left me wanting more. I want to see how well the voice chat works. I really think that feature needs to be included in all multiplayer games from now on. It should have been in MK7. Green, why are you not interested in the voice chat?

Played the demo but was not convinced enough to buy it in full, seemed just like a generic dungeon crawler and I can imagine it would get boring fast. Might get it in the future when it comes down in price but at the moment its not on my "must buy" list.

I'm still on the fence about it. I played the demo for about 10 minutes before work and it felt boring, but then again I didn't get far at all. I'll give the demo another go tonight.

Green, why are you not interested in the voice chat?

LJChronx

I guess it's just that I've always done fine without it.

I rarely play online games with anyone that I know, and even when there wasn't an option to use voice chat I didn't really feel like I needed it. I may feel differently after I try Heroes of Ruin myself, since voice chat could be helpful for a game like this, but I can't imagine myself using it a lot.

Its important in alot of games for strategy. Im not sure it will matter in this one, but I guess you could communicate which monsters you want each other to kill and maybe what kind of loot you are looking for/need. In some games its essential, like Battlefield, ect. When I group up with 6 or so fiends online in Battlefield and we are really communicating good, then we are almost unstoppable.

Hopefully it is not necessary for multiplayer. There are lots of situations where I have wifi and could play multiplayer but wouldn't want to be talking out loud.

Gamestop called me this afternoon to let me know that my preordered copy had arrived and would be ready for me to pick it up tomorrow. I am totally stoked for this game. I plan on focusing in on the Savage class and work on that for awhile. Maybe I will see some of you others online and we can team up.

I'm going to TRY to get this game tomorrow. I will probably start out as a Gunslinger. Even if this game isn't long, I plan on playing threw it with every class, so this game should last me a good amount of time.

Yeah. I think voice chat could be useful for team based games like this and Battlefield, and there were times in the Heroes of Ruin demo where I wanted to call the other players when I found a secret treasure room, or when I needed some help taking down a giant rune.

Though it's something I can't imagine using a lot - not because I think it's useless, I just didn't feel a strong need for it in other online games I've played. But like I said before; that could change with Heroes of Ruin.

Hopefully it is not necessary for multiplayer. There are lots of situations where I have wifi and could play multiplayer but wouldn't want to be talking out loud.

logicalfrank

NintendoWorldReport says that you can set voice chat to 'always on' or 'push to talk'. And I thought I saw an option to turn it off in the demo.

"In Heroes of Ruin, voice chat works fine, though. You can have it always active, so you can basically just keep up a conversation while playing, or you can have it activated by holding the L button. Either way is fine, and my conversations were always clear enough to make sense of."

I'm going to TRY to get this game tomorrow. I will probably start out as a Gunslinger. Even if this game isn't long, I plan on playing threw it with every class, so this game should last me a good amount of time.

GamerEye

I'll probably do the same thing, since I liked both both classes in the demo and I'm curious about the other two. I think I'll play as the Vindicator first. So if you see 'SaberGreen' online that'll be me. :P

Grabbed my copy just a few minutes ago when I got out of work. Going to fire it up after dinner and bible study and play for maybe an hour or so before family time. I plan on playing through the single player campaign mode with each class as well, probably in the order that they interest me (Savage, Vindicator, Alchitect then Gunslinger). I wonder if group dynamic makes a difference in online play or if any four characters can get together and do well.

I pretty broke right now, so I might have to wait a couple of weeks before I get the game. But I just got internet at home, so I cant wait to get it to play multiplayer and try out the voice chat. Pretty cool that you have the option of having it always on or by pressing a button to speak.

Here's a pretty good fan made trailer (not by me) to celebrate the US launch of Heroes of Ruin:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHg1iK0Oa2s

It's been added to the trailers section.

I've also added NintendoWorldReport's review for Heroes of Ruin to the reviews section. While not everything is perfect, they say the game has exceeded their expectations.

Glad to hear you're enjoying the game! I think I died at least 3 times in the demo because I didn't pay attention to my health bar.

Hopefully I'll have the full game in my hands soon.

I'm really liking it so far and I was worried I wouldn't. Main complaints are the combat system is to pretty much just spam attacks while using potions to keep going and, as mentioned, it is really easy to lose track of your health. In the former case, the simple combat just keeps the focus on character upgrades and loot so it's not a problem and is honestly not that much different than the constant mouse clicking combat of, say, Diablo. I'd imagine the health thing I will just get used to. I've only played a couple hours so far but based on that it's one of my favorite games for the 3DS so far. I am playing through solo as a vindicator and then will probably check out the other classes for online play.

Anyone know what all syncing w/ the website does? I did it and didn't really look into it further. I'll I've noticed is it gives you daily and weekly challenges. I'm wondering if you can't use it to keep track of friends or something.

I'm loving it so far as well. I'm playing through it as a Gunslinger first, solo, then I'll try the other classes. So far i'm about 5 hours or so into the game.

I played it for about an hour last night and loved it. I plan on throwing down again tonight and maybe checking out online play. The Savage is much more my type of character class than the Gunslinger who I tried out in the demo. I linked up to the website last night too but have not explored it either. For those who have played through the first dungeon: I six imp ears for the spell caster but finished the dungeon before I went back to her. Afterwards she was gone. Is she somewhere in the Nexus now or will I be unable to complete that quest?

I played the demo and I liked and didn't like it ... but the more of the Giant Bomb quick look I watch, the more interested I am in it. I might pick it up sometime next week actually. Anyone have some impressions they'd like to share? I'd appreciate it.

When you link your game to your Heroes of Ruin web profile you'll get access to a "vast number of cool features", with one of those features being the website leaderboard. You'll be able to see your position, your friends and the people at the top. You'll also be able to see who's killed the most enemies, who's spent the most gold, who's gotten the most in-game/website XP, etc etc.

Here are some additional details from the official website:

XP Ranks -- We've expanded the entire website XP system to include ranks and levelling up. Until now, filling the bar earned you a slot on the Wall of Champions (and even the Honor Guard, if you were quick enough). From now on, filling that bar levels up your rank - fill it further to level up again! The new website communicates with the game, so completing in-game challenges as well as the new web challenges will boost this for you. What's the purpose behind this grand scheme? Wait and see! More updates will come on this soon...

In-Game Challenges -- Check the daily (and weekly) challenges - completing challenges earns you actual in-game rewards, but you'll also see that we reward you here on the website as well. Be warned, these challenges don't stick around forever. Will you be able to complete them all? Don't forget we're supporting daily and weekly challenges for a year, so you will have plenty of opportunities to succeed.

Web Challenges -- We've added nearly 40 new challenges into the website, plus we have hundreds more in the pipeline! Check the challenges page and forums for clues on how to complete these to fill your XP bar even more. Here's a clue - you might want to have a look around the website to get what this is really all about...

Stats page -- We have a truly exciting new system built into the very game data itself. You are going to love this. Stay tuned as we reveal more details in due course.

I don't think the leaderboards are available right now, but hopefully they'll roll them out soon.

I'm now in the third area (the ice area) now. I'm having a blast. I must say, my favorit skill as the Gunslinger so far is that one that allows you to run and shoot at the same time (costing some energy/ mana/ or what ever it is called, while using it; of course). I found the boss for the fourth dungeon in the forest area to be pretty challenging, almost died a few times ageanst it.

Now (so far) my absolute favorite feature of the game is the ability to sell items without even having to pick them up.

How on earth do you do this? I need to RTFM. I've been wasting a lot of time going back to Nexus to sell loot.

The more I play this game, the more I like it. I am getting more into the combat system as I figure out more of what everything does. It is still pretty easy at the point I'm at but it's fun figuring out the best and fastest ways to kill enemies.

From the demo, it was "Down" on the D-pad if I recall, so I think it's still the same. "Up" was to equip the item right away.

That's it! Thanks. Apparently it puts it on the "trader's network" and it seems like you get less money for it. I guess I'll have to wait until I street pass someone to see what that's about.

You can also pick up the item, go to your inventory and press "Y" on the item to sell it as well.

Wow, I'm surprised, this game actually has puzzles :P. I had some trouble in the puzzle in the second dungeon of the ice area.

Also, just a heads up, but the gold cap in this game is 99,999. I just hit the cap. Time to buy stuff :P

My name in game is El ZoRRo(Vindicator). If you see me online, join up, let me know youre from Gamespot, and we can slay some bad guys. Just a few quick notes: I'm currently level 14(1 more and I get the skill I've been wanting since the demo, yeah!). I share loot, and sometimes I have some okay stuff to put up for trade. I use voice chat often, for calling out loot, calling for help and so on. If we work well together, we can trade FCs. And Jolly- once you get your copy, we HAVE to play together.

Cool, we should team up sometime. My character's name is Greg (yeah I know, not that creative :P), a lvl 18 Gunslinger. I usually get some pretty good drops. If we team up, I'll leave any Vindicator stuff I find on the ground for ya.

Also, how do we team up? :P Do we need each other's friend codes, or what?

I finally got around to playing the demo for more than a couple of minutes today with the Vindicator, and it was pretty fun. I'll probably pick this up sometime soon.

If youre playing online and I decide to join someone else's game, I can run through the list and look at the character names. If I see a gunslinger named Greg, I can join the game and see if it's you. If you want to gain alliance perks, however, we'd need to trade FCs.

The combat is a lot better than I expected so far, and the boss battles are pretty great. I can see the combat getting stale after a while, especially with a class like the Vindicator, but I'm a Gunslinger and its staying fun for me.

Ive just been looking at some of the blurbs on Metacritic for the lower rankings and I have to wonder- are these people not paying attention to the story? Our hero(ataraxis) is laid up from a curse after beating an entire land into utter submission in order to force peace on the populous at large. Our main antagonist appears to have no plans to rule the world(or so it seems thus far(I'm in the frost level)). I mean, it may not be fantasy on par with anything Terry Goodkind ever wrote, but it's by no means generic.

Indeed, the story is actualy quite unique. I think one of the problems is that alot of the quests, to some people, simply fall under the catagory of "fetch' quests, so why read it when all you need to do is find item x, y, and z?

Personally I would of gave the game an 8.0 at least, but that's just me.

I love the game a lot but I think the review is fair. The difficulty level and monetary system are straight-up busted. It doesn't ruin the game (I said I love it!) but it's a serious flaw that you can't expect a professional reviewer to overlook. That being said, I do have a few issues w/ the review. For one, as mentioned, the story is not at all generic. The presentation is fairly standard but the story is really quite unusual. It is ten times more unique than games they give much higher scores to. I also thought the hand drawn look and static images used for some of the cut scenes were really well done and something you don't see often any more. At the end of the day, I think this is a player's game. A reviewer can pick it appart all day and, you know, fair enough. I personally chose to enjoy the good aspects of it rather than focus on the bad. A sequel or just a similar game from Square Enix that addresses some of the issues in Heroes is a prospect that I'm really excited about.

Agreed.

I really do hope that n-Space makes some DLC for this game, as in more areas to explore, more classes (or least a gender option for existing classes), more side quests/ missions, and rising the money cap from 99,999 to 10,000,000 or something like that. But regardless, I am really enjoying this game.

I think changing the money cap and level cap are really important, and I'd like to see more areas as well.

I would buy DLC in a second and honestly would probably buy it even if it was just more of the same. There's a lot to complain about but when you get right down to it the game is still fun to play, which I think says a lot about what they did right--and I haven't even tried online yet.

Fun. The magic ingredient that a lot of people miss in games that are not mega blockbusters. This game has fun in spades.
