Try watching the replays of the guys who go faster than you to see what they do. Its likely they are using shortcuts, manual controls (drifting) and using wheelies all the time.

Play on 150cc and watch what the Computer Players do... you'll find your answers by watching them.

In the Time Trials, try to choose characters that have high speed, but have good handling. Also, try to imitate the Staff Ghosts by following their moves and use the karts/bikes they use. You need to beat the Staff Ghost by at least five seconds to truly beat its time.

besides the drifts/wheelies/shortcuts already mentioned... take the short path around the track... that is cut corners close and get good lines to lessen the distance you have to travel in the race. This is also an important task. If you race a ghost and take a corner wide you will see what I mean. The ghost will take a good lead ahead if you do or if you are constantly going from one side of the track to the other. The more distance you take in a lap the less your time will be. This will come from knowing the track you are on very well.

Kill a cheetah and eat it's heart, you gain it's speed and endurance, then pick your favorite kart and driver, it's what the pros do.

I heard that if you run around the room while playing with the Wii Wheel you might go faster.

If you ever get a mushroom or other form of speed boost, cut through a place that would normally slow you down, like grass, but make sure you can get back on the track before the boost runs out!

practice practice practice. also, download the ghost data from the world record times and see what they do, you'll find a whole lot of drifing, boosting, wheelies, shortcuts etc etc
