I never really thought about this until I heard someone pronounce it a different way than how I had always pronounced it.  So I'm wondering do you say it like the first part would be how you say mars.  So like mar - e - oh.  or do you say it like mare - e - oh?  I say it the first way and I'm just wondering how others say it.

Mar-E-Oh. Just like you said... first part like MARs, second part just like saying the letter E, and the third part OH, like at the end of Oreo. If it counts for anything, im from Maryland, with a slightly southern accent.

Here's a good way to check the correct way to say Mario. Was the person that thought you say it the second way either over 40 or under 6 years of age?

MA-REE-O

Where the "ma" is pronounced as it is in "man". A short "a" rather than a long one. Most English people I have spoken to pronounce it this way as well.

Mah-ree-oh. Note that the "a" should be pronouced "AH", not the way the "a" is pronounced in the name "Mary".

it really goes either way. The actual pronunciation of the name is Mare-ee-oh, but when Nintendo adopted it, they altered it.

I mostly say it with a dissapointed (sometimes angry) tone of voice. Unless I'm talking about Mario Galaxy. I want that game now!
