from their top 100 games, and reguarding Super Mario Bros being the #1 game of all time (for now);

"as the industry matures and gamers are weaned on entirely different experiences the influence of Super Mario Bros. will inevitably fade"

I'm not sure I'd agree with this statement personally but who knows.

I agree with that statement, for the most part. Right now, the industry is made up of people who saw the original Super Mario Bros. change gaming as they knew it. There will come a time in the not-too-distant future where the majority of the members of the industry will have been born after that game's release. Maybe their #1 game of all time will be Ocarina of Time. Who knows.

I have an attachment to Super Mario Bros. because I was born in 1984 and didn't get an NES until the late 80s. I was one of the gamers "weaned" on Mario and NES. I have no attachment to Pong because it was before my time, although I do appreciate many Atari games because we owned an Atari floppy disk drive.

My point is that it's harder to appreciate something that was popular and influential before your time. But then again, some things aren't so hard. I grew to love the Beatles in my teens, simply because I knew how influential they were and I wanted to know why. Maybe that will be the case for Super Mario Bros.

i think thats a bad statment. people said the same thing about games like pacman donkey kong and pong. but those games continue to be good and loved by everyone. just look at the qoute by metal gear creator right next to it. i believe he said super mario bros never gets old

Agreed, that's what I am afraid off too. They are good games in their own right but to think of those as the new most influential games is a sickening feeling. But then again, I'm not too keen on FPS games to begin with. They are fun but I feel way too overrated for the most part.

Halo is revolutionary you have to admit it really is, but it still can't beat out what it began with and yes eventually people will forget about the classics. I think the video game main thing now is grapics over gameplay whichs is sad.

The #1 thing I loved about Halo (first one) was co-op and how 2 players could really enjoy it, the vehicles and all that really were unique (to me). As far as anything else goes, it didn't really do anything at all for me. I do agree on the graphics over gameplay thing, a lot of people won't even try fire pro returns simply because of how it looks when personally I think it's the greatest wrestling game ever made.

Im actually getting tired of waiting for more N64 updates, but the older games won't entirely entertain todays age those games were made for longer ago and todays game are made to match todays kids, kids change with the times.

Super Mario Bros has made a lasting impact on the industry. I doubt the prospect of story lines, jumping and running are going to disapeer any time soon. And halo and gta will never have as much influence over the industry as mario.

true, if you've been growing up playing newer games and get used to that, you're probably much less likely to enjoy or be as impressed with an older style game that is/was really revolutionary. In the same sense though, it depends on the person too and what they like. I agree on the 64 updates, there isn't enough of them, but you can't please everybody.

agreed you can't please everyone, but the world is getting more violent and video games need to keep up with telivision that kids watch and everything.

If they mean "direct influence", then it has faded since some time... I guess games like Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time are the basis of everything since gaming went 3D. Anyway, there's no way a game can't be related to Super Mario Bros. It's like going back in the genealogy tree.

violence is just a big giant snowballing effect. People become used to certain things to the point where it's no big deal anymore so somebody pushes the envelope some more until that too isn't considered to be any big deal at all. There's good and bad things to go along with this.

I think that this is somewhat true.If the franchise continues to make improvements and stay up to par it will stay around. As long the young gamers are exposed to Mario before they play GTA, then Mario Bros. isn't going anywhere.

Mario Bros. is one of the games that belongs in the video game meuseme. It was amazing and great, its just, well, no one wants to play it anymore, compared to the amount that wanted to back then.

Thats wat i was getting at. Altho i would have to say a paintball game with wifi would be pretty cool. Not as thrilling as other online shooters but still it would be fun.

Personally, I disagree. Halo revolutionized the FPS genre for good. Halo 2/3 didnt do the same thing, but they were still pretty damn good games. I wouldnt say that Halo revolutionized the entire industry (as SMB did), but every new FPS that comes out today is only trying to beat Halo.

If you think that this statement is false, answer me this: What was the first innovative movie (And don't say Citizen Kane)? What was the first influential music album? Who invented the internet, or the cell phone?

These are all very important events in history, but without looking it up, chances are that you don't know the answers to all of these questions. Why? Because you weren't around when these events in entertainment happened (depending on your age). Eventually, "the influence of Super Mario Bros. will inevitably fade". It has to happen.

Mario, on the other hand, will remain until they stop making games for him. I don't see that happening any time soon.

it wont fade for a good long while but as our generations fade away so will that. There will be a day when something like the Wii was most game reviewers first system. It will always be remembered but down the road people that didnt grow up on it wont have the same connection to it that we have.
