I am getting a new Tv and am wondering whether to get 720 or 1080. I know the Wii's graphics don't go too well on 1080 tv's, but is it really that bad? I am looking specifically at between 30 and 39 inches. I was looking at Samsung but I am willing to buy another brand if the Wii looks better on it. I appreciate any help.

Samsung makes the best LCD money can buy right now, they are the leaders in the tech

It comes down to the quality of the set and nothing more

The better the TV does everything (that means SD viewing) the better the set will look when the Wii is doing it's thing

either one will work since the wii output with componant cables is only 480p but I have a 60" Mitsubish 1080p dlp T.V. and it looks good. I have heard that some hdtv look bad so make sure to do some research before buying a new t.v.

A 720p set won't make the Wii image look any better than a 1080p set, so you should go with the 1080p set since it's the standard now. Jagged edges become a lot more noticeable on these large HDTVs, but if you get a good set, the colour will be more vibrant. Since you're only getting one that's 30-39 inches, I think the jagged edges won't be so much of a problem for you. I had it connected to a really good 46'' set and the jaggies annoyed me so I moved it to a smaller LCD tv (~30'') and it's really nice, very vibrant, and jaggies aren't too noticeable. If you're getting an LCD tv, make sure it doesn't have an image delay problem. It'll be really annoying to play a game when the colours 'smear' on the screen. Make sure to get component cables.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll go with the 1080 since it makes no difference on the Wii. I'll get component cables, of course, I was planning to buy them anyways, andI'll do some more research on brands. Thanks for the help.

see if you can hook a wii up to the set at the store, as others have mentioned it comes down to the set. I have 42" LG LCD and the wii looks great on it. the jaggies are hardly noticeable, and the colors very bright. another thing to check for is lag, some sets can lag it's annoying.

If ypu get a 720 TV instead of a 1080 TV, you'll be kicking yourself later. There's nothing wrong with taking how the Wii looks on a TV into consideration, but I'd care more about how a bluray player will look than the Wii. The Wii is only going to be around for two or three more years, and you'll want that TV to last longer than that.

All you need is component cables and go to the Wii menu settings and change it from standard to compnent/HD/etc and I think you also change 4:3 to widescreen. Than it looks pretty fine to me.

I have a Toshiba 42" 1080 and component cables for my Wii and it looks just awesome. The Conduit looks killer in component. Twilight Princess almost looks like a 360 game. Dead Space and MP Trilogy all look amazing as well. Go 1080 ;)

Its look fine on mine, the only game that doesn't cut it visually is RE4 but only when in 480p.

You should be fine. If you were going larger, you'd want to make sure the TV had good upscaling technology to keep the image crisp (the tech is sometimes connection dependant as well, so make sure the upscaling ability is tuned to work for the component connection). Many TVs are skimping on upscaling now because inputs are all becoming HD so there's less of a need and it helps keep costs down. Sharp, Samsung, and Panasonic all make great TVs. Panasonic used to be known for their excellent upscaling tech in their projectors, but I haven't kept up with it.

The key here is not size its 'upscailing' - which is how the TV smooths out an SD image into a psuedo-HD image. My 32 in Samsung is really nice but doesn't seem to have a good upscailer, but I might buy an external one at some point.

Anyone saying 1080p is the standard is ill informed.

List of PS3 games that run at 1080p:

The Darkness

Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer

[ps] Super Stardust HD
Transformers The Movie
[ps] Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection
Virtua Tennis 3

That's it. It may be 24 games, but none are real big name titles.

Oh and...

List of 360 games that run at 1080p:

Street Home Court
Virtual Tennis 3

Yup, looks like 1080p is the standard these days.

http://www.thebestplasmatv.com/guides/720p-vs-1080p/

Yes from 6" away you can see differences between 720p and 1080p, but sit about the distance you sit from your TV and everything looks literally the exact same. Try testing someone, no one will see a difference.

And that's a comparison of native 720p vs. native 1080p. You'll be comparing native 720p running in 1080p to native 720p running in 720p. At best the 720p will look like 1080i, and the difference between 720p and 1080i is so miniscule even upon extremely close inspection you won't see much difference, if any. Then get back at least one foot and you won't know which is which, unless of course you know which spot they're in...

I have a 1080p, and I just replaced a very old 480p with a new 720p. I could've gotten a 1080p, but it wouldn't have been as nice a TV. All in all you need to compare reviews, not just the resolution.

I'd strongly advise ordering this NOW:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Panasonic+-+VIERA+/+42%22+****/+720p+/+600Hz+/+Plasma+HDTV/9244329.p?id=1218068507560&skuId=9244329

I was gonna get this one later, but it's on sale, $110 off for one of Best Buy's daily deals. I dunno if that means it's just for today but it's only $489 and it's one of the top rated TVs on Best Buy's site. Haven't hooked it up yet but friends that have it all tell me they couldn't be any happier with it.

All in all the Wii will do the same regardless of which one you choose, but if you get a 720p you can save money and get an all in all better TV. Plus if you have Blu-ray, a 360, or a PS3, you'll get just as good resolution as a 1080p TV, and since 720p is cheaper, the overall picture, if you aim to spend around the same price either way, will be better.

They mean for TV sets, not gaming. It is pointless to get a 720 instead of a 1080 for 100 or so dollar difference when in a few years the majority of media will be using the higher resolution. Also the majority of TVs available are in 1080 anyway, but it is important to note that the quality of picture is notnoticably different between 720 and 1080 when the screen is between 26 and 40 inches (from 6 feet away, which is what most people have).

Regardless, the number of Blu-Ray discs being made to run natively in 1080p is also small. Even on TVs larger than 40" the difference is hardly noticeable. I have both a 720p 42" TV and a 1080p 42" TV, and honestly the difference is so miniscule you have to get extraordinarily close to the TV to even notice it. Even with video that runs in 1080p natively, from about 3 feet away, 720p looks exactly the same. Check the link I put up.

It all depends on your TVs internal Scaler. I have a samsung LCD and Panasonic Plasma. Both 1080p and I find that games look better on my plasma because of better colors, black levels ect. The Panasonic also does a better job and smoothing out the jaggies on the wii. It scales pretty nice to 1080p. There are still alot of jaggies but no where as many as apper on my samsung lcd. So if you are getting a 1080p tv I think you can not go wrong with a g10 or v10 panasonic series tv.

I am jealous once you get those cables the Wii is going to look so nice! I have a Sylvania 20" 480p TV and it works fine. Maybe it is because it is smaller but I don't notice jaggies that much.

It looks okay, not amazing. The Wii doesn't support true widescreen though. You can change the settings but all it's really doing is stretching a low-res squished image, and it looks like crap. I know it's not true widescreen because my Bravia doesn't recognize it as such.

It won´t make any diffrence because the wii can only display 480 i recomend that you buy the 1080 tv through because you can use it when the wii 2 comes out or if you plan on getting another console. But if you wan´t good grahics on the wii just make sure the TV havef composite cables. Then buy some composite cables for your wii and that will make the wii´s graphics be clearer and smoother!

Plasma -- generally better color and dynamic range (contrast). They do a great job at distinguishing the different shades of black so shadows don't get muddy (you can see more details in darker areas) and I believe the image in general can be brighter. Can suffer from screen burn (usually correctable though) unless the TV has features like pixel shift or some other way of combating it.

LCD -- generally sharper image (pixels are smaller) and no screen burn worries.

Let's not forget about those new led TVs either. They are the latest trend, but I'm not sure what the advanteges are. Also of note is videophiles still prefer CRT technology.

Yeah, if only they could make a 60" widescreen CRT, without it weighing 1000lbs.

Yeah, but that's when they move to their $20,000 - $30,000 (or more) CRT projectors.

Is your Wii set to display wide screen or are you stretching the image on your TV? I've noticed this slightly, but not enough to be concerned about and it's only happened on one game (which happened to be a cheaper game) so I have a feeling the issue is with the game itself.

I have a Sony 52inch Bravia and 40inch Samsung. Both TV's are great for HD content but the Wii looks far better on the Bravia. I don't know how they do it but the results are amazing. Some games I would guess that they're 720p if I didn't already know that they're 480. Mario Kart Wii, Medal of Honor Heroes 2, Super Mario Galaxy look friggin' amazing on the Bravia.

It's all about the upsampling, which is something that many TVs are getting worse at.

1080p isn't the standard. Not many things are broadcast in "true 1080p hd".

But yeah, if you're buying a tv, its an investment. Go with the 1080p.
