Now i know you were thinking oh no not another wii graphics thread GOD i hate those! dont worry it is not one it is just a question that i dont know the answer to because i am not a tech wiz, so i decided to ask some of you in case you guys knew. well here it goes.

So my question is how far can graphics go? for example will there be a point in time that the graphics in games will not be able to get any better. Or will technology keep advancing to allow better graphics after every single generation. im asking this because what if in lets say another 3 generations the graphics are perfect and they make acutal people look totally real. Could it get any better?

Also i know some of you will also say virtual reality will be out by then. But once those graphics get perfect as well, whats next? can they always get better or will there be some end point?

thanks.

Well, I don't think that human beings will reach perfection in anything. Including game graphics. Technology doesn't have a limit.

so what you are saying. is that the games/consoles will keep getting better graphics every single generation? thats hard to imagine. like 100 years from now there will still be better graphic every single generation?

this should really be in general chat cause it doesn't have to do with the wii. but i the days of graphic improvement coming to an end. what we will start to see is better physics, better effects, like the fat on someones face moving when his face moves, as in jiggle or something.

You were n00b slayer? Well, I won in the monastery map and you won in the port one. Let's call it a tie.

On topic: It's really hard to imagine, but I think that technology will keep improving. In many years when graphics reach a level of almost perfection, who knows how technology would be like by that time, so someone would come with something new. Or do you really think we are going to reach perfection in something?

I think more detrails will be added, just like humans move, the, like maybe the constant sniff of the nose, or eyes water when you are somewhere cold, just the smallest details being added and added.

The more time that passes, the better graphics will get. They will probably become so good that we will be playing video games that are real actors etc... But who really cares. They are going to get better and better, but video games need to make more steps like Nintendo did in advancing how you interact with them.

I've got the answer.

We consumers will get more and more picky. We want bigger worlds with more stuff to do. Sure we want great graphics but we ALSO want great games. For 25 years ago someone could make a crappy game and make a fortune out of it. That's impossible today. We read about games on the Internet. We look at pictures and comparing graphics, and that is how it will continue.

My guess is that consoles will use a IR-camera system like the Wii and use it like a headtracking device which will create a 3D room environment on the screen. I think that's the next big step. But at the same time games must have a deeper story, more stuff to do and better graphics. This will be very expansive for developers, it's all ready expensive enough.

Not to mention the importanse of a well known brand. It will be hard for a minor company to put up that kind of money to get one shot of making a super hit.

I highly doubt gaming will end. Games are like sports to some people. In my opinion theres a whole alot of stuff thats going to change in gaming in a couple of years or so.

Anyways back to the topic.

Well if they do make graphics so that the games will actaully look like realy people then I'm guessing that's 5-7 years from now. Technology is advancing at a fast pace these days.

Graphics will eventually come at a standstill when processors become powerful enough to do raytracing in real-time, as to which video cards will likely be dumped along with its polygon-rendering system in favour of all the graphical eye-candy raytracing offers.

(as well as making PC game requirements easier as just needing a processor of X speed or higher, none of the directx/shader-model/drivers crap)

Anyways, as far as actual games though, developers will eventually find reasons as to why cardboard boxes need 5000 polygons so they can take their characters foot and step through it realistically, watching it properly crumble, then get caught on your foot as you try to move around.

Personally, I don't think so. I also disagree with the statement made by Nintendo that graphics have reached their saturation point. One technician was quoted as saying that graphics in games today are at the level of Toy Story. Now, think about the advances made in movies since Toy Story was released. By the time games reach the level of detail displayed in movies today, what will movies look like? I think this will continue for quite some time.

I think by the time graphics reach their saturation point, it will be feasible to create a virtual reality type thing, but to achieve this they have to tone down the realism. Then they will slowly increase it again.

Eventually, graphics will be so awesome, they'll be better than real life. Our home entertainment consoles will put the Earth's meager 510,065,600 km2 of RAM to shame!! :P

But really, I dunno where they'll go once they get to photorealism.

I think graphics will get better. I think that people will become more realistic and like move differently, and devs will focus on small details that will makr gmes more realistic.

I don't really like the idea of people looking like real people, I don't know why, but I don't think I would like it, but who knows?

We'll definitely see the point where we can create hyper-realistic games with amazing details, but artistic direction will trump graphics capabilities.

Technology will advance to the point where we won't rely on 2 dimensional displays. Eventually we'll get holograms.

What i'm waiting for is advanced AI. If you have ever played Half life 2: Episode 2, then you'll problaby be on the same page as me since the games AI is so realistic.

Seriously, would u prefer photorealistic graphics, or AI that is so good that you could have a conversation with the games characters. It would be cool to run in to White Forest (base in Episode 2) and yell "Hostiles out there!" and see all the rebels freak out and run outside to find that theres no one, cussing you out for scaring them.

Of course we need both, but why not focus on other aspects of a game than graphics?

its fairly obvious to assume that graphics will get better and better, there will be a day when antialiasing and other modern graphics technologys will look like 8bit nintendo, pixels.... well pixels in the future will be non existant, we have yet to make another major leap in computing technology ( which applies to consoles ) we havent reached next gen quite yet....

I hope you're being sarcastic with this. If you really think that realistic looking video games would make people want to do real violence, I'm sorry but you're wrong. I don't care how realistic looking games get, if you go out and hurt people because you saw it on a game, there's something wrong with you to begin with, the game isn't to blame.

That's kind of scary when you think of how that will work out in fps games where you kill people, i cant see the government being to happy about that kind of detail.

honstly i dont think all games will end up like this, i mean can you imagine a link that looks like your average joe dressed in green, or some dude dressed up as MasterChief? just kind of wrong, same goes with mario or anything, certain games will go all the way while others will look "nicer" but purposefully unrealistic.

Its hard to tell because SMG is the farthest they have pushed the Wii and even that could have looked nicer (amazingly enough). like most things Wii it really depends on how much third party devs are willing to go to make it good. Competition will be generated this way.

I remember reading some report that graphics have pretty much topped out. That's not to say they can't get better, but it will be more refined. Like say next gen it will be bigger environments, no blurry textures at all, more detail in the character models. As opposed to say, a more realistic character.

Because take a look at this gen as well as the PC... how much better can they get aside from CG? We have to remember that graphics have to be playable whereas the advancements in CG are set movements.

I could go on and on...

I've thought about this before, and I'm sure we'll reach a physical limit eventually, but until then we can keep increasing definition, refresh rates, lighting effects, textures, and reducing size.

I think eventually we won't even use TVs anymore, like instead having complete 3D virtual reality or implants in our eyes (which already exist) which act like a TV. I do think, as I stated above, that there will be a physical limit eventually- I mean, we've already discovered most of what there is to be discovered when it comes to technology, so in a couple hundred years I think it will be down to a science at the very limit, and we'll come up with one of the totally different platforms as standards, like the one stated above. Can't wait for that PS8!

Obviously in terms of photo-realism when it comes to graphics, we eventually will hit a wall. This is not including exploring different styles and ways to do a games graphics. I can see our next being improving other factors or other areas in games which Nintendo already seems to be making a jumpstart into that. As for these other factors one person had a pretty great idea that he demonstrates in this youtube video using a wimmote and some sensor bars. Check it out.

Oh, wow... that makes me think of a total self-contained three dimensional Earth with real humans, all interacting as they would in real life, minus disease, seasons, allergies, pollution, bad traffic, or anything else people wouldn't want. It could be... zOMG. I just described the Matrix. :o

Maybe, Soon that the other people in video games will get extremly smart, the AI,ect, I mean like, they will react, and do everyhting a human would do at the point, just, be amazingly smart.

And, they will graphicly make every bone, muscle, tendon, everything in the avatar's body, making it move exacly like a real human would if he/her would have gotten hurt, he'd limp a little realisticly in exacly where he got hit, and that certain bone would brake and your character would move like a real human would if her broke his arm, then collect a medic, your all good, maybe some wounds on your character that heal, that would be pretty insane!

Define better, and think about how other people define better. Only then will you have your answer.

If you mean completely realistic, yes, you can't get any more realistic than completely realistic.

If you mean artistic, who knows?

I think when we get really high in graphics, people will prefer game graphics over real life. Developers will want the world they are creating to be prettier than reality, so theyll add features to make it look better.

....and a long time from now (god knows when) Developers will be able to enhance our eyes, making us see even better. It would be like HD eyes.
