i'm pretty sure i was a victim of hammer spamming. it's when someone keeps using the hammer bros.' charged shot, which is a barrage of hammers that hit the goalie right before the ball is shot at him.
i've also found that the online pros (how did they get so good so quick?) usually are the fast characters, like waluigi, and run around until they get a clear megastrike.
the online works perfectly. the only problems i have with the game are that the single-player AI is either too easy or impossible, and it is nearly impossible to score any other way than a charged shot. i loved bending shots like beckham from midfield in the GC game... i think i need to get better at the "perfect pass" goals, where you lob-pass between a bunch of teammates, then shoot.
