I've been thinking about getting this game for my Wii but it looks like it's aimed towards playing with multiple players. I'm hoping for a single player experience that is on par with 2d Mario games of the past. Does this game deliver a great single player experience?

I've been going through it on single-player. I find it pretty tough especially trying to get all the gold coins in the level.

Yes it does play great and fun as a single player game, just like the old school games

As long as you realize that it's not meant to be a revolutionary game like the older ones were for their time, then it shouldn't disappoint. It's a very fun, and challenging game. The level structure is great, and probably my favorite for the 2D games, because each one has its own unique idea. It's short if you do the minimal amount in order to beat it, but getting coins and finding different secrets throughout the level adds to the value.

The game has fabulous single player. But just playing through that is only using half of the game. Once you try it with three buddies, you wonder why you ever wanted it to be a one-player experience (like I did :P).

Difficulty is about the same as other old Mario games (I'd say easier than SMB 3 and harder than SMW)

Otherwise it plays very much the same as the old ones do in single player. I prefer the game in single player.

If your looking for some platforming goodness, its the game to go to, its great on single player because you don't have the benefit of the multiplayer crutch. The levels are designed around a single player, but are still alot of fun to monkey around in with more players. I would definitely recommend it to you as a single player game. Some of the star coins are great platforming puzzles or require a really sharp eye and quick reflexes.

That's like asking "How is Goldeneye a single player game?" Or anything with multiplayer option, because it's just that; an option. And the single player portion is a lot of fun, it's own game.

The single player is just like playing the old games in single player. It works well as either a single or multiplayer game.
