The last Nintendo console I owned was the N64. For some reason unbeknownst to me, I never got around to buying a Gamecube last generation...

Since the Wii is apparently backward compatible with Gamecube hardware and games, I was thinking of picking up a Wii, a Gamecube controller, Gamecube memory card, and a few Gamecube games that I passed on last generation...

With that said, however, I would like to know first what the backward compatibility is like with the Wii.

Can anyone enlighten me? Thank you very much in advance.

It's perfect in that every game and accessory (subtract gba player and the broadband adapter  ) works (the games have a tendency to work even better, for example, where a scratched disk may have given the GameCube problems, the Wii could read it). However, it doesn't let you save GameCube files to the Wii itself, so you have to use GameCube memory cards. Additionally, despite the fact that it would be awesome, you can't use the Wii Classic Controller with GameCube games. It really is basically having both a Wii and a GameCube independent of each other.

The games play great, and in case you decide to download some Virtual console games, some of them are actually compatible with the GC controller also. Nothing earth shattering, but I thought that was pretty neat.

Not only is it a perfect emulation of the Gamecube, but it's a perfect emulation of the nes, snes, n64, gen, & tg-16....

So it's pretty much the most backwards compatible console EVAR!

effthat

It's not emulating the Gamecube.

It's almost perfect, don't buy Phantasy Star Online if you want to play it online. None of the online Gamecube games work online on the Wii.

The Wii is great with backwards compatibility. All of the two dozen or so games I've tried using have worked perfectly.

the reason the GC games works so well in the wii is because there are two seperat drives in it one for the GC games and the other for the Wii games...

No actually its 2 drive...When i wii stop reading wiigames but i could still play GC games.i called nintendo and they told me that there are two drives in the unit so its not uncommon for only one to got out...This infor came from nintendo them selves.

Then they either misunderstood your question, or you misunderstood their answer.

And for a small price, 5 other systems ;)

So far only rivaled by the PC (arguable). The Wii has the best backwards compatability.

Also, get a wavebird for GC games. Totally worth it. 2nd most comfortable controller ever, IMO.

Gamecube games run perfecty, if not better than they did on the cube. I noticed some games had faster load times. And seeing as the Wii's game library isn't so hot right now, you'll deffinatly want to invest your money in some Gamecube games.

It's the same as the gamecube. The GC games you should get are: SuperSmash Bros, Battalion Wars, and Metroid Prime.

Well... Other than the PS3 which is backward compatible with the Playstation and Plastation 2 games. Pretty much the entire Playstation line.

Anyone notice an improved sound quality when playing GC games on Wii, or is it just because my Gamecube specifically had inferior sound?

Skip the Wavebird and grab a 6 foot extension with a Gamecube controller and keep your rumble.

Really? I tried playing re4 on my wii, which is not scratched up at all, and I got disc read errors occasionally that I never got while playing on my gamecube. I got a good feeling its because the wii drive isn't quite as fast, since wii games load a little slower than gc games.
