I'm currently saving up to buy a new handheld game system and since the Nintendo DS still costs around 200 dollars here I don't want to spend that only to have it get superseeded by the next generation systems in a few months. So I was wondering if anyone knew how long the DS was likely to remain the current system for nintendo please? Is there a new system in the works or can I buy a DS safe in the knowledge it will still be the current system next year or the year after?

The Ds is just in his biggest moment there is no point in making another handheld for the next 3 years, since it will work with the Wii in many games, i.e. Pokemon BR, Final Fantasy CC, etc.

so don´t worry i don't think, and is illogical, that there will be another hand-held from Nintendo at least in some years

the DS is not 200 bucks but 129 even with tax not even 150. But a slew of great DS games are coming like Ninja Gaiden and Brothers in Arms. The DS is going to last for a while. Looking at Nintendo's handheld history, it doesn't look like there will be a remake of the ds for atleast another 1.5 to 2 years. there will definatly be another one. but the its stil works like the DS. There were three version of the gameboy, the original gameboy, gameboy pocket, and gameboy color. Now there were three versions of the GBA, the original GBA, the GBA SP and the Gameboy micro. Looks like there is a good chance of history repeating itself that there will be atleast three versions of the Nintendo DS.

Well if Nintendo likes to release things alongside a counter part to make them compatible. The Wii was released with DS compatibility. That would mean that if Nintendo releases another handheld it would have to be compatible with the Wii in some way. So they wouldn't release another handheld until another next gen system.

So in short ask yourself when they will be releasing the next system after the wii and around that time is when they will release the next handheld.

So the DS has a lot of life in it.

too true, I could see a DS with at least a slightly bigger screen,

and two touch screens and graphics that top the gamecube (drool)!

Thanks for the replies I'll buy it then. Different countries have different prices the local stores here are selling it for $185 I checked this morning and it was what prompted me to see how long a lifespan it was likely to have before I spent that much having carefully saved up to buy an x-box (at the storepersons recomendation) only to have the 360 show up the next year (and incidently all my games suddenly stop working on the same day. It still play's other games but none of the ones I already had).
