I played a demo of the 3DS at Gamespot the other day, and I was amazed at how small the screens were. Now, keep in mind, I play on a DSi XL. How long odes it usually take for Nintendo to release a new version of their portables? What would you like to see modified? I just want to see a bigger scree

I think never. Just like the Wii, the design is fine and up to date (unlike the original DS in terms of design, and the DS Lite missing out on connectivity). There isn't anything the 3DS is missing.

The only possibility is if they find out that they can do larger screens with glasses free 3D. Then maybe they will release a 3DS XL. But I doubt that this will happen.

I played around with the system in a shop today for a good 20mins and was thinking the same as you, the system looked incredibly small, the buttons and D pad are so tiny, plus I wasnt sold on the 3d (well there was no game in the system for me to check it on) that I saw. I always said I'd wait for a redo, but my guess is we'll be waiting for around a year and a half.

Haha yeah right, portables always get new versions, consoles never do (with the exception of 'slims' which are just simple redesigns with no new features unlike the ds lite/dsi). And honestly, did you really see all the flaws in the regular DS, DS lite, and DSi? Did we really need the DSi XL? No, but they'll keep releasing slightly improved versions.

OP they release a new version around every two years or so, so expect it either in 2013 or late 2012.

The only one of those that I wouldn't expect is the DSi XL. The DS and DSi had obvious flaws, especially compared to the PSP's connectivity and design. I don't really see how they can do any better with the 3DS.

I don't know. I can't imagine it getting much better than it is. Only thing that would make it better to me are XL screens, non-slippery back, and thin enough so that it can support a huge battery without making thicker than the current model.

They said they don't have any "short-term" plans, but I strongly believe we will see a new version in a year or two. It helps keep the system relevant, and entices consumers to buy a 2nd 3ds. I just would like bigger screens and a price reduction before I think about buying one.

I'd guess at least two and half years. The design of the 3DS is fine, unlike the original DS, and they have made it clear that they aren't releasing a new model anytime soon.

Regarless if Nintendo does release a new version, the current version does not lack anything. Consumers are complaining about battery life but they are just complaining because they need a reason to pick on something. It's also just a matter of choice because there are still consumers out there that are happy with their DSLite and don't care for DSi or DSi XL or even the 3DS. I don't see Nintendo upgrading for some time, if at all. They might release new colors such a Mario Bundle by the end of the year but that's about it.

Probably when the WII U releases, there will also be a new 3DS, maybe called the 3DSU (hey, you read it here first :)), allowing you to play WII U games on the small screen, and maybe some other inter-connectivity features between the two systems.

Like the Lite, I'd imagine we'll get an announcement in a year and a revision in a year and a half. Nintendo has stated otherwise, but really - it's not in their interest to get people to wait, especially with 3DS sales already disappointing.

I do not think the 3DS in its current form is perfect in ANY way. I own one, but there isn't much about the design I'm happy with, so there's plenty of room for improvement:

  • Surface finish is a fingerprint magnet. The three layer and four/five colour design is hideous. The lid having a DS Lite style clear candy finish but the rest of the unit solid colour is just bizarre. Whatever the revision ends up being, it needs a cohesive design and (hopefully) a matte finish.
  • Hinge strength needs addressing
  • Screens touching causing lines needs a fix - and not just longer bumpers
  • sturdier 3D slider would be nice
  • stylus in a different location - preferably the right sidelike all of the DS models, or even the left
  • volume buttons would be preferable to a slider, especially in terms of handheld longevity
  • slightly bigger dpad would be great too (same size as the DSi, ideally, it's just larger enough to feel more solid)
  • battery life
  • battery life
  • slightly larger screens are an easy improvement. The bottom one is smaller than the regular DSi's already.
  • improved viewing angle on the 3D effect and less crosstalk. The current model is ridiculously narrow and has problems with double imaging or ghosting, particularly with light on dark.
  • Better placement of the power button
  • more button-like select/home/start buttons

And that's just to start. It's not the monstrosity that the original DS was, but let's be honest - the DS Phat's main problem (other than tiny, not very bright screens) was that it was hideous. The 3DS isn't quite as bad in that regard but it still could use work, plus it has a ton of small hardwareproblems.

All the current flaws with the 3DS are minor and would not warrent a redesign. You could not get any real smaller than the 3DS already is, thus making a "Lite" version of it pointless. Could we se a 3DS XL? I think it is likely but probably not until a year after the Wii-U launches; I would imagine Nintendo would not want to compete with itself by launching a new version of the 3DS at around the same time they launch the Wii-U.

The next 3DS will most likely just have an improved 3D effect and better battery life, although maybe not since battery technology isn't where we want it to be and Nintendo can't do anything about that.

That is crazy that the Color to Advance to DS were only three years, and gap between the DS and 3DS was seven. :O

i don't think they should until near the middle of 3rd quarter of the 3DS's lifespan. They don't need to fix anything right now besides the batterylife.

Judging by how they have handled their past handhelds and the fact that there are always improvements to be made (whether or not they really warrant a redesign), I agree with everyone else who is almost completely certain that we'll see a new version within the next few years.

The Hinge is not the best, but almost everything else you are complaining are not real flaws. 3D slider is ok, It has a volume slider not buttons like you say, it has no ghosting, the power button is well placed and the battery is more than enough. Seriously who the hell will play more than 5 hours straight?

Anyone traveling on a plane or car, or even being able to play your handheld for a couple of days in a row without having to charge it all the time. There is definitely ghosting, too, although some of the result seems to be up to whoever codes the games. Zelda has some really bad double imagine on the square cursor when you're buying stuff in shops, and it's not caused by holding the 3DS incorrectly - it's a problem of the screen itself. The others are minor gripes, I will admit, but there are things that Nintendo almost obviously chose to do with the original 3DS model so they'd give people a reason to upgrade. Otherwise we'd have a 3DS that shares much more in common with a DSi than it does.

i think itll be announced at E3 2013. perhaps earlier if the Q4 of this year is a disaster. but it dont think it will be...the games lineup for the 3DS is looking pretty fantastic. im going to find it very hard to resist :S. but i would be surprised if we dont have news on a Lite or V2 or something by E3 2013. as for improvements the major things for me are 1) the battery life. ninty screwed up 2) the 3D viewing area. its not nintys fault with the current screen but new tech is coming on boad to improve it. so i would like to see some of it put into the 3DSLite. fix those 2 problems and i will be a customer.

Well not everyone travel so much that will need a longer battery. It's 5 hours and more if you turn off the wireless, 3d and so on. Plus it is a piece of cake to charge, just put it in the cradle and the next time you take it, it will be full. The only thing that's true are the size of the top screen, it is too small for full 3d games but anyway that still is a personal preference.

They won't launch a 3ds lite cause the current model is small and doesn't weight to much. As usual they will launch a new model at some time but not a Lite model.

At least a full year. I wouldn't mind a larger 3DS, actually. Maybe they can improve the screen design so there's less of a direct focal point for the 3D effect to work.

im just referring to it as 3DSLite as the DSLite was the second revision of the DS. i could call it 3DS V2 or 3DSi. i dont know what ninty will call it. im not using Lite to specify any upgrades. it could be bigger, it could be slimmer, it could have even smaller or bigger screens. i dont know. but when i say Lite im just saying V2 basically. not any specific improvements.

1.5-2 years. Despite Nintendo claiming they aren't going to make a "3DS Lite", they've made multiple remakes of their past two handhelds, which have helped boost sales a lot. They'll more than likely do it.

Mark my words the only "New" 3DS that will come out in the future will be the Red version 3DS. Nintendo is DONE with handhelds for now. Your an idiot if you thought thet would do a 3DS Lite, 3DSi, 3DSi XL lol. Nintendo has all their focus (System wise) on the Wii U.

I've noticed a lot of ghosting in Zelda as well, hopefully it is more just how the game was coded than an issue with the screen itself.

The ghosting it's called corsstalk, and every 3D capable screen suffers of this problem, so it's not a 3DS only problem, and apparently have nothing to do with the game, only on high contrast areas.

Probably in 2 years time. Everything can be upgraded and it's not just the size that we should consider. Maybe the next iteration will be bigger like a 3DS XL or maybe better screen for 3D and a longer battery life. There's also the possibility of changing the stylus and the slot. Only Nintendo will know what can be changed and what will be changed.

i honestly dont they will make a 3ds lite. the 3ds design is excellent. unlike the ds phat. ds phat was bulky, made hands cramp and the screen was too dim. ds phat looked like a prototype. ds lite was a much needed redesign.

Gameboy:

  • Original - 1989
  • Pocket - 1996

Gameboy Color:

  • One Version - 1998

Gameboy Advance:

  • Original - 2001
  • SP - 2003
  • Micro - 2005

DS:

  • Original - 2004
  • Lite - 2006
  • DSi - 2009
  • DSiXL - 2010

So going by all that, you can expect about a year and a half of waiting.

That is crazy that the Color to Advance to DS were only three years, and gap between the DS and 3DS was seven. :O

This is most likely because Nintendo had the idea of a "3rd Pillar" for the DS. It was never meant to replace the Gameboy brand, and then it just totally blew up once the software began to show up. My understanding was that Nintendo was going to support, home console (a given), GBA (as a more traditional handheld) and DS (if DS succeeded as a more experimental system with games and applications that could get a broader consumer base to purchase it). What ended up happening is game devs started to figure out some really cool things they could do with the DS and we ended up having the best of both worlds with excellent traditional games (Mario Kart, NSMB, Pokemon, various creative RPGs, traditional Sonic games) and broader appeal games and software (Brain Age, Cooking Mama, interactive cookbooks). Thus, the Gameboy brand was phased out in favor of the new hot selling DS brand. I really feel like Nintendo may have wanted to do something more traditional with the 3DS in terms of design, but 1.) knew it needed to be BC and 2.) the DS brand is huge and they needed that form factor and name for marketing. It will be interesting to see the the Gameboy brand ever shows up again.

The absolute earliest we can expect a new version of the 3DS will be fall 2012. Maybe even spring 2013.
