I haven't preordered one yet, but I was wondering, since I live pretty far away from it and it had a pretty good trade-in deal I was considering preordering.

Is gamestop reliable for preordering systems?

I think the general rule is 72 hours. Generally they'll hold your system until you pick it up. I don't know if it applies to every store, but I've heard that in extreme cases (shortages) they might give up your unit. But don't take my word for it

Well a guy in my store told me they will hold your 3ds for 24 hours after launch, who knows if its actually true or not though. Especially after they sat there and told me they might be doing a early opening the next day instead of midnight release because they think it is for children rather then adults! Last time I checked, the Japanese commercials for the 3ds have all adults in them (no kids whatsoever). But you know ignorance breeds ignorance, and here we are in America.

It's pretty hard to say. I wouldn't even rule out the possibility of them running out before everyone with a pre-order gets one. If that's the case, you could end up having to take a number. It's not probable, but like I said, it is possible. If I were you, I'd be in line before they open on launch day. It's a lot safer than coming in after everyone's gone just to find out that they suck at inventory and gave yours to "someone else with a pre-order".

I think if you don't pick it up in 24 hours you will get an answer like: " Oh, they didn't ship as many as they promissed us, so check back with us in a couple weeks."

I will say I trust Gamestop enough to have it for me as soon as they release it, but beyond that I'm not so sure :P I agree with pizzaman and Forty, I would be up there the day it comes out. I would not be surprised if they over pre order - I mean only 1.6 million are getting shipped to the us. The Kinect sold 1 million units in 10 days and it is only a peripheral with a set audience, so I do expect shortages because the 3ds does appeal to a much larger audience (even more then normal with the no glasses 3D concept). I don't think any store is 100% full proof when it comes to a hot item that will sell quickly. You could try amazon since they ship it to you, if you don't mind waiting a day or two, granted that is better then waiting months to snatch one up!

Gamestop is VERY reliable for preorders. They'll call you two days before reminding you to come pick it up. If you don't make the hold time, they'll let you know when the next shipment comes in so you can get one. From past experience, I pre-ordered a DS Lite and they held it for one day (I made it in that day). However, I'm pretty sure they've changed the policy to 48 - 72 hours.
