I haven't preordered one yet, but I was wondering, since I live pretty far away from it and it had a pretty good trade-in deal I was considering preordering.
Is gamestop reliable for preordering systems?

It's pretty hard to say. I wouldn't even rule out the possibility of them running out before everyone with a pre-order gets one. If that's the case, you could end up having to take a number. It's not probable, but like I said, it is possible. If I were you, I'd be in line before they open on launch day. It's a lot safer than coming in after everyone's gone just to find out that they suck at inventory and gave yours to "someone else with a pre-order".
I will say I trust Gamestop enough to have it for me as soon as they release it, but beyond that I'm not so sure :P I agree with pizzaman and Forty, I would be up there the day it comes out. I would not be surprised if they over pre order - I mean only 1.6 million are getting shipped to the us. The Kinect sold 1 million units in 10 days and it is only a peripheral with a set audience, so I do expect shortages because the 3ds does appeal to a much larger audience (even more then normal with the no glasses 3D concept). I don't think any store is 100% full proof when it comes to a hot item that will sell quickly. You could try amazon since they ship it to you, if you don't mind waiting a day or two, granted that is better then waiting months to snatch one up!
Gamestop is VERY reliable for preorders. They'll call you two days before reminding you to come pick it up. If you don't make the hold time, they'll let you know when the next shipment comes in so you can get one. From past experience, I pre-ordered a DS Lite and they held it for one day (I made it in that day). However, I'm pretty sure they've changed the policy to 48 - 72 hours.
