How long do you think the Wii's lifecycle will be? Nintendo has traditionally gone with a five-year life cycle for their consoles. Will this trend continue?

Now that technical specs are no longer an issue for them, why can't the Wii last 7, 8, or even 9 years before its successor is released?

There are others that believe the exact opposite. That idiot analyst Michael Pachter seriously believes that Nintendo will release their next console by Fall 2009.

Where do you stand? Discuss.

The way things are going it will still be hard to find a Wii in the fall of 2009. It should be a great system for at least 5 years.

You forgot competition. So if the Wii life cycle is 9 years. Then the next PS and Xbox will be out, Wii will be left in the dust, then by the time the future Nintendo console comes out the next PS and Xbox will be over and a new one beginning.

Plus I would like to see a more intuitive Nintendo console with better graphics before 2012. So I will say what the majority of others are saying.

What do you mean techincal specs won't be an issue? o_O, as time passes, we'll be seeing more and more things coming from 360/PS3 that won't have the same effect on the Wii even if they dumb down the graphics. I definitely think that the Wii will last for a bit, but probably not 6 years. I think a bit more than the Gamecubes life span should be just about right for Wii.

If technical specs were an issue for Nintendo, they wouldn't have created a system with last generation hardware.

I have a feeling the Wii will pull a PS2 - carry on into the next generation - but will be succeeded by Nintendo's next console five years from now (2013).

Dont forget that the wii will be getting better and better things as well. Its not just the PS3 and 360 that get better.

About 5 years because Nintendo will want to keep up with the competition when Sony and Microsoft release their next consoles...but don't worry just enjoy your wii.

from what I understand, Nintendo basically nonstop develops their next console. It's likely they have no definite design, but they are always preparing for the next console as soon as one console is released.

And yeah, 5 years probably. So 3 more years and Wiiii will be released

why can't the Wii last 7, 8, or even 9 years before its successor is released?

Rocky32189

Why? cause I'm not waiting 7, 8, or even 9 years to have my perfect collection of SNES games on the Wii.

Nintendo better not milk the VC for that many years.

If I have to wait 7, 8, or even 9 years for Kirby Superstar to be released on the VC, I will gladly unplug my Wii right now, carry it outside and throw it against a brick wall until there is nothing but little pieces remaining. (just like what I did to my 360 controller 3 days ago)

That thought is not even remotely entertaining... If I have to wait that long for the VC games that I want, I will do something radical...

120 years with it's existing power cels...oh wait, that's the terminator I'm thinking of.

I think the Wii should last atleast 10-15 years considering all the virtual console games people download onto them.

If the Wii had failed, there would have been a console released on par with PS3/360 3 years after the release of the Wii. I would imagine Nintendo would have been prepared for the Wii's failure if the low tech/revolutionary controller idea didn't catch on. Since it is a huge success, Nintendo will ride it until it is no longer profitable. Let's just hope the 3rd party software improves. No More Heroes is a step in the right direction.

3 years. The lifespan of the current gen for 360/ps3/wii should'nt be more than 3/4 years.

How about the fact that Nintendo hasn't announced anything in regards to a new console? Is that enough proof for you?

Unless someone here works for Nintendo (I wonder about Jayson...) we have no real way of knowing...

However, a new console seems unlikely at this time.

So basicly you post a link to an OLD article that was posted before the Wii was released(still called revolution at the time) and thik it has revelance to the quoted text? Nowhere in that article did it say when Nintendo was released the successor to the Wii, just that Nintendo was waiting for HD standard to become stable before supporting it.

Regarding the comments about the VC, it only seems practical to me that Nintendo will allow Wii owners to either move their already-downloaded games to the new console via an SD card, or just let them transfer their account and re-download them. It'll also be interesting to see how Sony and Microsoft handle this with their future consoles (assuming they both actually stay in the race). Given that this is the first generation to really have full-blown online/DLC, we can't really know yet how it'll shape up for anyone.

But about the Wii's life-cycle, I think what another user said about "pulling a PS2" is highly probable; the gargantuan casual/non-gamer market will probably be happy with their original Wii for years and years to come, while Nintendo moves on with their "catch-up" console. Of course, its just as likely, and probably better in the end if the next system simply improves on the motion control aspect while making it fully backwards compatible with the Wii's games and controllers.

4-5 years from this point seems about right. I highly doubt that Nintendo are stubborn enough to be willingly left in the dust.

The world is supposed to end in 2014, so it's a moot point. lol

Seriously, though, I think the Wii will simply run it's course until the other companies start announcing that their new systems are in the works.

I think it will be about 5 to 6 years in length, officially retiring right before the Wii 2 comes out (or whatever they'll call it). Featuring "next gen" graphics and a stronger support for online, it will be a major competitor for Sony's PS4 and Microsoft's Xbox 720. All this at a price of $400, 200 bucks cheaper than the other two platforms. Plus it will feature some unheard of innovation to gaming that the competition will try to cop later on. Maybe a VR chip that goes into your brain, or something.
