Hi,

I'm just wondering how many older gamers play their DS regularly like myself.
I do realize that I'm not the only older gamer (I'm 46), but have a teenager who
feels very embarrassed that mom is still playing video games. It's kind of ironic since the reason
I originally purchsed the DS Phat almost 4 years ago was for this same person but a few years
after the purchase I was the one who was hooked on playing it, lol. I find playing
my DS not only entertaining but also as a way to wind down from a stressful day of work and to keep
my memory working with some challenging DS games. I also have a Gamecube but no longer
play it and just focus on the DS. Why should it matter what age a person is if
they are enjoy playing the DS, yet some people will always think of video games as something one
should outgrow as they reach adulthood. I plan on playing video games for many years to come even
though noone I know who is my age plays them. Thanks for reading this and any thoughts/feedback
would be appreciated.

I think I might find it a little weird if my parents played a PS3 regulary or another large console, but I wouldn't mind them using a DS.

I'm not that old, but I'm 26 and play my PS3 often and my DS at night before bed. My wife doesn't play games, but she knows its what I enjoy doing to relax, so she puts up with it!

I'm 25 years old and do not plan to stop gaming anytime soon. IMO you're more mature if you're not desperately trying to be mature. A lot of 18-88 are like that though, bragging how mature they are.

Your kid doesn't need to be ashamed of anything.

I'm not any older than 20 years. But I just imported a DS. I haven't played it yet, since it's at home and I'm stuck in the army. But I'm pretty sure it's going to be fun, AND I am pretty sure I will play games until the day I die.

One does not outgrow games, it outgrows you. And then you get new ones ;)

It's because it's the usual stereotype that it's the childen/teens/youngsters who play the video games, while the parents are scolding them for playing too much. The gameplay and style usually don't suit the elder ones. That's why they tend not to play vidoe games.

When they see the scene like this, they are going to laugh out loud. LOL
Don't feel unhappy about it. When you see something funny, you will act similarly by reaction.

You shouldn't be affected by others simply because how they think who should usually play video games. There are nothing wrong about playing video games if you are in moderation. Strictly speaking, it's just one kind of sports. ;-)

Go ask the teenage why an older person can't play games. See how it responds. :-D

I'm 32, and the DS is easily my most played system. I think it's primaily due to the types of games, which can easily appeal to an old group. I love what many would call the casual games, thie CrossworDs, Soduko, Brain Age, and Puzzle Quest, but I also enjoy the games that feel more like games I grew up with than most console games today: Castlevania, NSMB, FFIV, Sonic Rush etc...

I also bought both of my parents DSs two years ago for Chrstmas and they're in their 50's. My partner who is in his 60's regularly plays my DS and I'm considering buying myself a new one (saw the new teal onecoming out) so he can have the old one. (He's already said he doesn't want a new one)

Have you noticed all the DS advertising aimed at adult females? Most of the marketing of the Brain Age-type games, for example, is geared towards adults.

While I haven't been playing the DS, specifically, all that much, I did recently upgrade to a DS Lite to give my aging wrists and eyes a break and hope to take advantage of all the fun casual games available for this system.

Im fourteen, and some people are embarrassed when I play my DS, as they have the impression of Nintendo being for younger children around the age of 10 or younger. In my opinion, I think it's cool that (you) can find enjoyment in something thought to be for younger children. In a way, you're brave for actually playing what and how you want, instead of being embarrassed.

Why shouldn't you do something that you like doing? Even though I take a few jabs, I still play my DS in front of them, sometimes playing Animal Crossing, sometimes a shooter like Metroid.

My mom is in her forties and she loves, loves the DS, exclusively any Mario game. Ever since I got an NES, she started playing Mario Bros. She did venture into Tiny Toon Adventures, her second favorite game. But now, she still plays Mario on the DS.

I think it's great that you're enjoying gaming! I think that's something that is good about this sudden boom in the casual market, it makes it accessible and acceptable for anyone of any age to play. To be honest, there are a lot more 'mature' gamers then you may think. I'm only 18 myself but I work in a Gamestation and we get customers of all different ages. In fact I had a customer telling me how he plays on the Wii and he was in his 80's!

Just keep enjoying your DS, it's a great system and the range of games are fantastic.

Lolz You're kid is just being a typical teenager. Maybe if you showed them this post they wouldn't be so quick to judge their parents! It's true casual gaming has expanded the market (my dad plays puzzle games regularly), but that shouldn't limit the older crowd to games targeted towards them. If you're open minded, the people who judge are the ones who're jealous!

I believe DS and Wii bring more typical non-gamers to the gaming scenes due to their unique playing style (more user-friendly to them too)

I'm 14 and my Mum plays Wii, so I'm in the position of your kids. I'm not embarrassed of my Mum, I'm happy she plays to relax. Her favourites over the years have been Zelda (yes she has skills!), Banjo, Spyro and especially Mario. Althought she took a bit of getting used to the controls of Galaxy.
Keep playing games man! Good for you! :)

Hi everyone, just wanted to say thanks to everyone who responded to my post. It's nice
to hear from people who do not think anything is wrong with playing the DS when you are my
age (46). I was wondering why some people think it's okay to spend mindless hours
watching tv but not okay to spend time with games that are in the categories of strategy, puzzles and
many others genres when one is really giving their brain a workout. Thanks again and happy DS gaming!

father is 40 years old and up until I moved out of the house, I played games with him constantly. Hell he bought a PS3 when I moved out and took my PS2 and Gamecube. I don't find anything wrong with it,in fact I encourage it. Video games are the best form of entertainment.

I'm 25, not quite as old as some of the posters here. I am not sure what you mean by regularly. I probably play my DS about once a month, unless I just bought a game. Then I probably play that game for a week, before I get set back into once a month. That is fairly regular for me. I play PC games about twice a week, XBox 360 once about every 2 weeks, PS2 about once a month, and my Wii gets played about twice a year and special occasions. Prior to being 19 I played video games on a daily basis.

Rock on Acoustic, I'm 51 and I play everyday. I have two kids and two grandkids. We all have a DS except the youngest girl Kailea who is 4. I am also a plant engineer and have traveled extensively. I don't care what people think, my wife thinks I'm compulsive and she is right. I have 40 games. My wife has one but she does not play much so really consider it my back up just in case. So there you have it, now lets get it on! I am playing advanced wars as we speak.

I play my DS several times a week. Don't worry about what the kid thinks about your playing. You do what ever you enjoy, life is to short not to have enjoyment.
