The Wii costs $250 now, and has since launch.

Nintendo has always made profit off of every Wii sold.

Sony originally launched the for $599, even though it cost $840 to create one PS3. Since launch, Sony has gotten the price down to $399, and the cost to manufacture a PS3 is $475.

I figure, if costs were cut down that much by Sony, Nintendo surely has cut down costs as well. Last generation, the Gamecube was on sale for $99 at one point, and still made profit off of every box sold. It has been about 28 months since the Wii's launch, so, how much does it really cost to make now?

too much. with its hardware i can't believe it still costs to manufacture one like $240 from projections they should have 1. taken out SD slot, and 512mb flash memory and added a 10GB or 20GB HDD. 2. made the 729mhz CPU dual-core and put it a little higher up to 1.2Ghz or 1.5Ghz, low end PC stuff 3. instead of 64mb video ram made it 128mb video ram, that way with this increased hardware it could've still been $300, maybe $250, and it would stilll have sold well we know this guys 4. with a HDD, put Wii sports on the HDD cutting costs of a disc 5. without a DVD player, SD slot, they also wouldn't have to pay the licenses for these things. that saves money too. that factors into manufacturing costs as well 6. for christ sake the Xbox did 720p let the damn Wii do 720p if developers want it too.

7. cut the GCN memory card slots and make GCN memory be savable on the Wii's HDD

they could've done so much more with it

#7 is an interesting idea but if this happened I would not be able to play my gamecube games on my gamcube when my wife is on the wii so I don't think I would want it too badly. However, being able to save cube games directly onto the Wii would be really cool.

As for how much it cost.... I have no idea, but it has got to be under 230 by now.

No matter what they are not gonna cut the price of the wii until it stops selling, and I don't really foresee(sp?) that coming maybe until much later this year.

It is hard to say if Manufacturing has gone down. Remember that the price of oil went up, and oil is often used to make plastic. Not to mention the increase of transporting the materials and consoles. It is true that the price of oil has dropped, but notice that the gas prices are still relatively high compared to the cost of a barrel of oil.

A few months go Nintendo released a statement saying they only make $6 off of every Wii sold but that includes Retail fees and other stuff so the Wii actually costs less but Retailers get most of the money.

Remember the Wii hasn't changed at all since it's inception.

The PS3 has lost BC, USB slots and other slots as well I believe.

The 360 has had complete motherboard revisions & also lost hardware BC but has gained an HDMI port on the Arcarde and Premium version. Oh and the Arcade now has more onboard memory which is cheaper than a memory card it came with before.

Probably not much. The Wii is essentially just a Gamecube with extra memory and a small hard drive. Considering they were able to sell the Gamecube last gen for 100 bucks a pop and still make a profit, they must be making a killing off the Wii. They aren't going to drop the price just for people's convenience if thats what you're hoping for. So long as people keep buying them like crazzy the price is gonna remain the same.

That $6 figure is after the yen increased in strength versus the dollar.

Actually, the Wii got a 2X upgrade compared to the GC. It's a lot more than just a GC. Just look at Galaxy or the Conduit, they wouldn't even be possible on the GC.

Architecturally speaking, the Wii and GC hardware are practically the same.
