and how much space do games and virtual games take up?

The internal flash memory as the guy before said :)

Like I said. It's "FLASH MEMORY". You don't need a memory card and there isn't a disc to save to. All your data is saved to the "FLASH MEMORY". Got me now?
basically your saves are saved to the flash drive(tiny hard drive). jakefolk
There isn't a hard drive in the Wii. Big or small.
Lets just say the Wii doesn't have much space.ACDC19i agree they need a update so that the memory stick will also work

Yeah the Internal Flash Ram is Good enough for now, but I"m sure in the Future they will offer Support for EXTErNAl Hard Drives will be UBER!!!
I am ABsolutely Sure they will go with a Hard Drive in their next system and that they will make it as Powerful as the Competitors for Sure NExt Generation Wii-2 for the WIN!!!!
PLEASE NINTENDO I LOVE YOU!!!! MAke a COmparably POwerFul System next time!!1!

They really couldn't make a system of equal footing (in terms of horsepower) with Sony or Microsoft. Not while those two are willing and able to sell their systems at substantial short-to-mid-term losses.

It won't be called Wii-2. At least not in Japan. 2 in Japanese is Ni (pronounced nee). So the Wii over in Japan would be called the Wii Ni. Nintendo is not crazy enough to call it that.
no way would nintendo call it Wii-2... its always a Nintendo system Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Nintendo 64, Nintendo Gamecube, Nintendo Wii. It'll probably be codenamed like the other systems were Dolphin and Revolution. I can't imagine what it would be called... only time will tell.MrPoo6321
But that's the thing... it isn't "Nintendo Wii", it's just "Wii". Nintendo has dropped their name from the product, so perhaps there will be a "Wii" lineage.
actually quick 2 things, Flash memory can be consided a solid state drive, which is superior in all terms except space, that being said, the wii's ssd is very small, enough to save games on and load a bunch of vc games to, but hopefully sometime early next year nintendo will release a usb hard drive for the system.
Next, the future console for nintendo could actually stay with flash memory as it is superior, (faster access times and near impossible to compare seek times) plus capacity is reaching 128GB by the end of 08, and by 2011, should be cheap enough to find in the next nintendo console, so expect that console to contain 32-128gb flash memory with option of SD cards that can store 128gb of data.

Actually, Flash also has a limited # of write times. This makes it less-than-ideal for caching and buffering (two things HDDs are frequently used for).
It's also more prone to data corruption if the power should be cut while it's writing.

this actually is anywhere between 100k and 1m times, depending on quality of production, samsung has been working on this as well, but even with 100k writes, this would work great for a hard drive as that would last quite sometime.
Hard Drives are actually much more easily damaged, as sectors can be left currupted and you would lose data based on that, also nintendo doesn't use it's flash memory to buffer caches, and ssd manufacturers have produced hybreds for caching files on pc's but on a console, I really don't see your point.

If you're just saving files (saves, games, etc), then sure, 100,000 is probably more than enough. But like I said, buffering and caching is a problem, since both involve frequent data writes. That's why I believe a HDD would still be better.

True, but you usually won't lose all your data at once if the power should fail while the HDD is being written to. I've had this happen to me several times with flash memory.
Disc Buffering can be extremly useful for reducing load times in games. This isn't so much a problem now, but as the developers start to really use the HW...

Consoles don't really need any of that, they buffer everything to ram, if your talking about pc's then a Hybred would be best, in the future you will seriously be looking at a Solid State Drive for atleast the drive you run your OS out of, you could of course get a Hybred and solve your buffering problem, windows XP will load from off to the desktop in 9-13 seconds, which comparitively is much faster then a hard drive ~30s this was probably a big thing with the wii, as the OS could be brought up faster with flash and seek times are much smaller.
Still for the next Nintendo console, Ram will take care of caching as it usually does in your pc that you are writing this on. (the Hard drive only caches files when there isn't avalible ram, and thus calling it vitural ram) I see what your saying, but for a console I would hope that it would be effectent enough to do the caching with it's avalible ram.
Also when your hard drive spins you will be in loading, since most of the games now and days aren't really set with LEVELS that would mean extreme loss in frame rate, and on a pc could result in vitural memory low messages :-P hd caching is completely crap, and most people know it.
