So two questions about general 3DS use, just seeing how people compare/contrast to my own experience:

1) How often do you clean/maintain your 3DS?

2) How much do you use the 3D graphics function?

For me, the answers are:

1) I clean it every day at the end of the day when I know I'm not going to use it anymore until tomorrow (so usually right before I go to sleep, cuz I'm playing it while forcing myself to say awake lol!). I like to clean off all the smudges and dust that may collect on it so that in the morning it's all fresh and clean looking!

2) Almost never. Before today the answer would have been never, but I have been trying out the Legend of Zelda 3D functionality today, and even though I have it on the very very smallest 3D possible, it still looks different than with it disabled. I'm not sure how much it adds to the experience with the slider so close to off, but I guess it's a start, and I really hope Super Mario 3D land is easier on my eyes than the Zelda 3D...

1) Never. At most I may wipe a smudge off the screens with my finger or blow a piece of dust off. 2) Always while playing games. Off and on in other apps or in the store depending on what I'm looking at.

Just picked mine up yesterday, so zero of both so far :P. Ok a bit of cleaning sorta I guess lol. and 3D in the menus just cause I was testing it out. I will play it a lot more soon, but right now I am busy, and when I have free time I spend it on Skyward Sword.

I am a bit paranoid about the screen scratching business (bottom screen outline on the top) so I am thinking what the best solution is right now. Clean it after every use? Put a cloth between the screens when closing it? Take some pads from a 360 (or elsewhere) and use those as bigger bumpers? Apply a screen protector? I dont know what the right answer is.

I clean it pretty much every other day, before and after I play. Smudges annoy me. I only have 1 3DS game, so I don't use 3D very much.

Regarding the 3D functionality. I was at an expo couple of days ago with MK7 being showcased. Started playing OoT 3D to get a feel of the handheld and I honestly couldn't understand how to look at the 3D and/or hold the 3DS with the function on without getting extremely dizzy and disoriented. I doubt I will ever use it (will get one eventually for Kingdom Hearts and Layton VS Wright).

  1. I always make sure the top screen is clean (I have screen protectors, so it only takes a second), because dust and smudges can really clash with the 3D effect. I usually clean the system about every 2 weeks, just lightly wetting one end of a towel and using the other end to dry it off works for me.

  2. It depends on what I'm doing. In games like Tetris Axis or Dead or Alive: Dimensions I usually play with 3D off, but in games like StarFox 64 3D and Super Mario 3D Land I almost always play with 3D on. Outside of games I mostly use 3D when watching a video, viewing a picture or browsing the e-Shop. Overall I use 3D a fair amount.

I clean it right after I finish using it all of the time and I always have the 3D effect on. I do not understand why someone would purchase a 3D system and never use the 3D. How many threads are there over on the XBOX360 and PS3 boards are there asking how many people play their games in HD?

I guess if there are problems with it (people being dizzy or having headaches) I could understand, but for the rest of you, what did you buy the system for?

I feel like the 3D doesn't really even make a difference unless you play with it all the way up or close, but the only way it doesn't make me feel really disoriented is if I play with it really far down...

1) I only clean it after someone nasty touches it or I'm having trouble seeing the screen.

2) And I often use the 3D function, but it's on the lowest setting possible.

No need to clean it, and the 3D is always full on. It really changes the game experience. I wonder what style of 3D people prefer. I like how Mario Land offers the two options.

And i use the 3D function in games like OoT and SM3DL,but not with fighting games.

Or StarFox 64 remake,i don't use the 3D on that.

1. After I finish playing, I wipe both screens, the buttons, and the analog stick, with my shirt. Cause it gets all oily and gross. Sorry for the info. :P Then I put that little styrophoam cloth thingy in between the screens when I close it so that the top screen doesn't get those scratch marks. I make sure the cloth doesn't get in the way of the hinges when closing the 3DS so it doesn't get caught in the hinges. Then I wipe the exterior with my shirt because that gets oily too. 2. Depending on how I'm feeling, I turn the 3D on or off. A lot of times the 3D just looks blurry and annoying to me so I leave it off. But during cutscenes or specific parts that I like, I turn it on.

Once a week, maybe, or whenever enough specks accumulate that it interferes with the 3D or I simply get annoyed with it. I always play with the 3D except in DOA, as its 3D effect is pretty bad (lots of inappropriate clipping with the edges of the screen and 3D effects that don't match up) and 60fps is nice.

I've been thinking of buying some kind of thumb attachment, as I don't care for screen protectors. It seems a lot of games use the touch screen for item swapping etc--any products people might recomment? As of now I am thinking some sewing peripheral.

If I'm feeling brave, I use very little 3D effect. I don't need it to enjoy the games I have. I don't like it but the system offers what I want, even without the 3D gimmick. I clean it all the time with a cloth that came with a screen protector pack I bought but too scared to put the screen protectors on

People overstate the benefits of screen protectors anyway. Unless you're actively swirling a nail around on your 3DS screens or tossing gravel between them when you close it, you aren't going to get any visible damage.

That is not true... I'm assuming you don't use them. I bet if you really cleaned your bottom screen and looked at it from an angle with good light you'd see the beginning of scratches on the screen. As you play more games that use the touch screen, more, and occasionally bigger, scratches may appear. If this happens to screen protectors, you can switch them out and have a brand new looking screen in no time. If you don't have them... well, you're stuck with a damaged screen. I've seen quite a few accounts of people not doing anything to their screens and keeping them clean and they still get scratches and chips taken out of them. Screen protectors keep everything normally used for playing from coming in direct contact with the screens and absorb any damage that might have occurred. If someone really does use nails and gravel, they are on their own. :P

I use a cloth that I use to clean my glasses that I bought @ one of the eye glass stores. I clean my 3DS at least once when charging unless I have too many finger prints on the screen.

The 3D function I use 100%of the time.

Clean it everyday and use 3D all the time. I love the 3D so much I hate not using it. It's great in so many games, and SM3DL is really the first to alter actual game play in a super tangible way, but otherwise I find it to be nice eye candy.

Star Fox 64 3D, especially the planet Aquass, was amazing in 3D.
