how to ev train a pokemon?

i dont really understand it completely, but heres what i do know:

EVs are rewarded to a pokemon after they defeat another.

for example: if pikachu defeats a geodude, it will receive 1 EV for defense. a pokemon can only recieve 255 effort points for each stat (63 stat points). the points are rewarded in the +(number) whenever you level up. 255 EVs is 63 stat points because each EV represents 1/4 of a stat point.

the limit of how many EVs your pokemon can have is 510. after that, they stop counting.

so if you defeat 4 geodude, the next time you level up, the defense stat will raise one stat point more than it usually does.

the energy items such as carbos and proteins are for EVs as well. one of these items represents 10 EVs. since there must be a limit to this, you can only use 10 of each item before they have no effect.

each pokemon has their own specific EV that they give when they are defeated.

i tried going there but it didnt really answer my questions, i still dont understand, i am trying to ev train a gligar for defense so i was killing geodudes, am i supposed to kill all of the geodude at once and then wait for the results, or do lie 4 each level, and it doesnt say anything about the rarity of 31 iv'staylor47474
