I still can't understand why Metroid was changed into an fps game. Makes no sense. So I'm wondering would you all still like zelda as much if they were to do the same to it as they did to Metroid? I wouldn't and I still think they blew the huge potential of what Metroid could of been. Oh well I jumped off of the nintendo band wagon years ago after the N64. I still think/know I made the right move but this isn't about that. I will probably buy a wii in a few years when its dirt cheap to own a library for all the old nintendo games.

Metroid going FPS, to me, makes alot of sense. However, I'm much more a fan of the 2D games.

But Zelda...If Zelda went FPS I seriously don't think I'd go near it. I could handle a side-story game, like what SE did with DQS, but I probably still wouldn't buy it.
I'm pretty sure they'd never put Zelda in a FPS-type game anyway though. Wouldn't happen, unless they made some sort of full featured sequel to Link's Crossbow Training.

Also, I find it hard to believe that the rpg paper mario is better than than the super mario rpg that was released back on the SNES. I forgot the game was made by squaresoft. I guess there is nothing Nintendo can do about that if Squaresoft doesn't want to continue the series with that game. The same could be said about secret of mana. Then again even if Squaresoft went back to making some of those rpgs would they even release them for the wii? I don't think they would put a new secret of mana on the wii and by pass the ps3, xbox.

Metroid moved very successfuly into the fps genre, and I loved the Prime trilogy. We also got a great 2d Metroid game the same time as Prime in Fusion, but to each his own. And on Zelda moving to an fps view, would never happen. It'd be like Oblivion meets Zelda. Which while in theory sounds awesome, would just take everything the Zelda series stands for and smash it into the ground.

what do you mean you couldn't see why the metroid games are in first person shooter? i mean, samus has a cannon on her arm and she shoots stuff so take that into consideration, it makes perfect sense that it's a fps. :P anyway, they cant do that to zelda cause it wouldn't make sense at all. anyway, ill be furious if it happened.

No need to comment on things that wouldnt happen, however I believe the move to first person was a great move for metroid, it actually added something to the series, unlike Zelda which would just be in a first person view with no real reasoning behind it.

As far as just the issue of Zelda going to FPS. Would not bother me in the least. in its current style its better of just like it is. of course there are alot i woud change and the cammera angle would not be at the top of that list.

It'd be a change of pace for sure. But Zelda's probably not suited for a first person camera angle. But I do want Zelda to change but not necessarily in that direction. Even if it was done, Nintendo could pull it off despite how much flack they get for doing it.

As for the Metroid series, Metroid Prime was an outstanding acheivement that is an excellent example that change can be good because the core Metroid gameplay was still there. It was just made more immersive by a simple move as changing the camera.

Of course, that simple move got a lot of negative feedback. When you think about it, the camera perspective isn't a real big deal. If the gameplay is still there, that game is still the same, but with a different perspective. It can't directly change a game, but instead is just influences parts of it.

The Zelda formula needs a fair overhaul, even if it does mean going first person. It probably wouldn't be smart as it wouldn't have mass appeal (as the majority of this thread are against it). Still, the gameplay is what counts and the camera perspective would only have influence over certain parts of it.

The series certainly needs a shakeup, but I think the shakeup should have more to do with the structure of the games and progression style than viewpoint of gameplay mechanics.

As far as I can tell the gameplay in Zelda is as golden as ever, it's just everything else that needs changing in order to keep the series fresh.

I don't think it'd work for Zelda, and I'm pretty sure Nintendo would never do that.

Metroid going first person made sense, and the Prime games are amazing.. It's not like they really changed the Metroid forumala.. So I can't really see any good reason to see why you'd not like it for going into 1st person.

It'd...become Metroid, basically.:? Their styIe's of gameplay are so similar,a first-person Zelda would feel a lot like Metroid Prime.

Yeah, Nintendo already has a first person adventure series: Metroid. There's no reason why Zelda needs to be first person.

Pointless posting much? Link doesn't shoot any guns, they HAVE implemented FPS for boomerang and arrows and whatnot, but why in gods name would this even be a question? There is a look and feel to the character to maintain throughout the game, not to mention FPS would be WAY out of bounds for this game that it would just never happen. This would be more of a horrible move by Nintendo than it was a pointless forum post.

Although I have little right to speak of this simply because I never played any of the ****c Metroid games, I will still argue that the use of the first-person perspective was an ingenious descision made by the game designers. When Retro was trying to smoothly place Metroid into the third dimension, their main goal was to retain every bit of the moody, immersive atmosphere for which the past installments had been known.

The best way to do this, they found, was to use not only a first-person perspective, but a never-before-seen "in-the-helmet" perspective which allowed a player to truly experience the minute, realistic details that might actually be seen an armor-clad bounty hunter while exploring a lush alien world. For the first time ever, a player could see not only the pouring rain in the distance, but also the raindrops trickling down your glass visor. These minute details that were made possible only by the use of a first-person perspective work together to elevate Metroid Prime above the status of the average adventure game, and into the realm of the most atmospheric, immersive, and beautiful games ever created.

I don't see why they can't do both. Really, the difference between a 3rd person and a 1st person should be nothing more than where they put the camera. If I prefer to be in 3d so I can watch my own backside walk around I should be able to. If I want to be in first person I should be able to toggle seemlessly.

Thief 3 comes to mind. Without bothering with other aspects of the game I would have to say that is one of the best cameras I have ever played with because when you got close to a wall it would zoom into first person so 'you' didn't obstruct what you were trying to look at. and you could play it 100% in first person if you really wanted to.

One of the reasons Metroid worked so well was because you had the first person view to provide the 'HUD' to help you get immersed, you didn't have to have your view blocked as you moved around and it only kicked out to a 3rd person when you were morph ball'ed and took up less visual space (and the FP didn't make sense).

Apply that to Zelda... what immersion would be gained by having link have a 'HUD' like FP interface? Not much in fact I feel it would be out of place. But if they allowed a FP and a 3rd person view that I could toggle on my own accord I think that would be great.

When in FP mode I seem to have a better sense of where my 'game' body is relative to everything else that I just don't get with a 3rd person aspect. I know that is backwards from what a lot of other people feel but I don't see why game designers can't give us both. Probably because they don't want to try and make the model look as sharp and detailed when zoomed in...

I agree wholeheartedly, but I do not think that this is the point the topic creator was trying to convey.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you meant to use the unpleasant "Zelda" metaphor as a way of describing your feelings on the first-person Metroid, didn't you?

That's how I read it, but I liked the topic title more than his post. Personnally I like to play games where I become the character, not follow them around with a camera. I think FP pulls that off much better than a 3rd person camera. But then again, some people have to look at the character they are trying to be... thus why the popularity of the 3rd person camera. Metroid works as a FPS because of the details described by Emmenite7. Now, I don't see why retro couldn't have put a 3rd person toggle on and appealed to both the FP and TP market.
