Indeed, all the games he listed to tout the greatness of american developpers had one glaring thing in common: mindless, insensible, over-the-top bloodbaths. The epitome of "mature" entertainment indeed."Western developers work to not only make great playing games, but also more attractive ones that appeal to our culture..."

I haven't gotten around to reading all of it... in fact I haven't gotten around to reading 5 words of it. But in any case, what site is that again? Oh, right. It's AOL, America On Line. They say the 360 has the best controller, where is the 360's homeland? I'm not putting down the US (I live here). I'm just saying, without Japan we wouldn't be as well off in gaming as we are now. In fact we might not even have games (because after the game crash Nintendo started gaming back up. And Nintendo was founded in Japan).Arcanine_88They state exactly what you just said in the article. It's not a one-sided event.. there is actually someone on the Japanese side there.

Hell, I have tremendous respect for Japan. Without them I wouldn't get to play my favorite game (Zelda). To say that they don't deserve any credit or refer to their games in passed tense is a shame. Tp and the Wii in general begs to differ.
Only in America!"Western developers work to not only make great playing games, but also more attractive ones that appeal to our culture..."

I have no problem with a "bloodbath" every once in a while, but IÂ certainly don't think that they are the WAY a game is obligated to be. As Buffa states.

The fact is, the topic is so stupid it shouldn't come up. "OMG Japan's games sucks, we would be better off without them.", any gamer knows that we owe a lot to Japan for gaming. I don't care if it was one sided or not, it shouldn't have come up in the first place.

in america it is, or at least that's how we are stereotyped as a wholeThough I actually agree with this "Buffa" guy on the RPG thing (I'm sorry, but he's right... Japanese RPGs follow one formula just like he says, and though they were fun when I was 12, they've become pretty stagnant since) he really seems to just be an Xbox fanboy... and possibly a bit of a xenophobe.
That's like me saying FPS games follow the same formula, they were fun back when I played Doom but they've become pretty stagnant since. You're as ignorant as the guy in the article if you think they all follow one formula.Though I actually agree with this "Buffa" guy on the RPG thing (I'm sorry, but he's right... Terami
And you'd be right... most FPS do follow a formula, and they've gotten a bit boring too. Just because you like RPG's doesn't make it untrue. If you enjoy them, great... good for you. But they are pretty much all the same and interchangeable.
And by the way, why is it that any time someone points out a flaw in something that someone else likes in this forum they're called "ignorant"? To me it seems much more ignorant to pretend that something you like is flawless just because you like it.
That guy sounds like one of the lemmings on these boards. Someone should take this to SW and see how it explodes.
To say Japan isn't needed anymore is plan ignorance and idiotic. That guy should be fired. Also, he fails to mention Capcom, a Japanese based developer, that lemmings like him seem to love.
I read this. I'll go with Workman over Buffa.
Japanese did a pretty good job by revolutionize the video games industry. Nintendo did save the industry in the video game crash in the 80s. I think it's them who make the most innovative games ever and will always be. I don't remember an American developers making a game that is not what's called epic.
Buffa is the perfect stereotype of an american hardocre gamer: FPS, online, HD graphics gamer. If something is wrong in these characteristics, the game or the entire console suck. I made this assumption when people are annoyed with the online gaming. Japanese are not that kind of gamer. They are more RPG, anime and portable gamers.
Without Japanese, there were no video games at all other than on PC.  Â

Buffa's argument is that Japan is stuck in a rut, so to speak. That all they can produce anymore are tired turn-based RPGs and that Western developers are leading the way. In some ways, I can see where he's coming from. But many of his comments sound like something you'd find in System Wars.
"Western developers work to not only make great playing games, but also more attractive ones that appeal to our culture." Oh, wow. Western developers make games that appeal to their own culture? How impressive. No, really. Let's all give them a round of applause... *cough* Meanwhile, Japanese developers not only make games that appeal to their own culture, but to the West as well. Let me know when Western developers can make games with worldwide appeal.
"Do we really need Animal Crossing when we have Viva Pinata?" I think a better question is, "Would we even have Viva Pinata if we never had Animal Crossing?" And the answer would be no, sir, we would not. Japan still influences developers around the globe with their innovative ideas. So while he may prefer the Western take on most genres, I hope he remembers that many of them are based on Japanese games that came before them. Japan obviously still has a significant impact on the industry.
"Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls IV: Shivering Isles, Halo 3, NBA 2K8 and numerous others will make Mario Party 8, Armored Core 4 and other bland, uninspired games look foolish." The fact that a sports game is included in his list makes me a bit queasy, but even worse is his apparent claim that Mario Party 8 and Armored Core 4 are the best Japan has to offer. I've heard better arguments in System Wars. Japan's influence on the West may be declining, but it's only a result of a recent influx in Western developers who shamelessly pander to our "culture," and is no fault of the Japanese developers themselves. They will continue to make some of the best and most innovative games in the world.
But with games like Gears of War, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories and God of War 2, does Japanese influence matter?
I hate Gears of War, I hate Grand Theft Auto, and I have not played any God of War games yet.
