At the moment you cannot play those downloaded games for VC from the SD card, with the upcoming update you will be able to do so.

This is a SD (secure digital) card.

This ^^

Nintendo should've figured that out from the beginning though.

No you won't. You still won't be able to play VC games from the SD card, but you will be able to download them directly to your SD card.

An SD card looks like this:

SD card

2.0 GB is the max size that the Wii will take. It allows you to store data on the card - an expansion to the Wii's memory, if you will. Normally, you can execute programs off external drives and memory cards, except when there are restrictions. Nintendo imposes restrictions.

Nintendo underestimated their own service that's why the SD cards were a little useless. I'm fine with the SD cards.

Next gen should be interesting because there's huge rumours about the holographic storage being on the next console.

Have some fun reading about SD cards; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital_card

You can save on your SD cards but you can't load them directly, you have to re-transfer them in your Wii to use them. With the update coming in spring,we'll be able to PLAY VC games directly from the card.

Wait, so I'll only be able to download the game directly to the SD card and I'll still have to copy it over when I want to play? That's just complete total BS, you can't call that a storage solution.

I sure hope that people won't be able to play the games off of the cards. If so, here comes even more piracy. Everyone keeps complaining about storage. Well the solution has been presented to you all and you refuse it. I would much rather spend 30 dollars on a 4 GB SD card then $80 plus on a external hard drive for specific use on the Wii. Most people complain about all the attachments this system has, having a hard drive only adds more. Get over it and deal.

You can't use a 4 GB SD card with the Wii. You can only use up to a 2 GB card.

Says who? I've used a 4GB memory card for my camera with my Wii and put saves and games on it no problem. SD slots in general can handle any size of SD card, as long as it's the SD format. I really don't think Nintendo would only restrict it to 2 GB. That's just as high as they are selling the Nintendo SD cards for, in case people don't want to buy a camera one. They all still work the same to be honest.

Well let's hope that the Wii SD Slot can be opened up even more by a download update allowing for SD cards of larger size (especially the High Capacity 16 and 32 GB cards which are coming out berry soon) to be used for saves and photo/video viewing. Hopefully they acknowledge the fact that people need more than 2GB of camera or Wii space now than they did in 2006. By 2011 the world will most likely be on 64 GB SD cards.

I agree with you and will be hoping along with you, but judging by how behind-the-times Nintendo is with technology, I doubt they'll open it up, though it would be nice if they did by installing some drivers with an update. On the other hand, I (and many others) already have an external hard drive. Why can't they release a simple update so I can use my drive with the USB ports rather than buying a bunch of 2.0 GB SD cards? Why not give consumers storage options?

And I'm pretty sure you can allow people to play off their SD cards and still be safe from cheaters. I mean, you can remove the hard drive from the ps3 and play games off the psp memory stick, so I'm sure there is some sort of DRM security technology that can ensure people aren't sharing their games with others who haven't bought them.

wow this is BS and if its for anti piracy crap nintendo sony and microsoft should know by YOU CANNOT STOP GAME HACKERS PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

big companies really need to get over themselves people always find a way to hack the system and considering a game system lacks the importance of say the pentagon putting countless idiotic anti piracy things onto the system is complete nonsense and really just false security cause guess what you can play burned DVD-R's on a wii which means anti piracy measures are officially useless and this was done within the first week of the wii being out

and i agree the wii needs a storage solution which could in turn allow dreamcast sega cd and sega saturn games to be emulated and be used on the VC and considering the VC is one masive cash cow adding three more big popular systems to the mix would just clinch nintendos downloadable games lead they already have which would help considering nintendo wii i cant think of a good game that didnt involve i must play with my mom syndrome that has been released other than fire emblem and smash brothers this year which is depressing actually the gamecube had more good games out by this time in its life cycle and could always amuse me the msot use my wii has is gamecube playing lol. seriously come on nintendo make a hardcore game and fix the storage abilities and make the usb port useful you know actually have it be used for something.

and hey since ive always wanted to try some sega cd and saturn and dreamcast games i know id front the usual 10 bucks for a few good games on those systems and id feel better than using google to do it lol.

nintendo has really dropped the ball on the wii's potential and has been slow as hell with upgrading it and the flash drives really have a very limited purpose its sad actually eh good thing i didnt go nintendo only this time and got a 360 early in the race so i dont have to put up with nintendos casuals only attitude and gamecubes long droughts and developers calling it evil and unworthy.

now do not get me wrong i am not bashing nintendo really as i have a ton of cube games and enjoy them greatly but just saying nintnedo has dropped the ball somewhere along the lines here.

The storage solution is a joke, pretty much everyone agrees on that.

Besides.. my problem isn't VC games, they only take what, a few blocks here and there? Compared to say.. SSBB save data, which on my Wii is currently at 125 blocks and will not copy to an SD card (anyone know why that is?). I've run out of storage on my Wii and VC games isn't the issue >_

if i download a game to my SD card...and i used that SD card on another wii and my wii, i will only be able to play that game on my wii right, and no ther other wii?

if they put some copy-protection so the downloaded game won't run/be copied on another wii, then what's stopping them from having games run from SD?

ok to try and clear best i can, from what i can understand, the wii does not support the hcsd (high capacity secure digital)standard, cards above 2gigs follow hcsd standards but not all cards, there are few that dont conform and some of these cards do work, i have a pretty old adata 4gig and no where on the card is it marked hc but it does hold 4gig (3.7 free) of space, since i did buy it online, it could also just be a cheap clone, it was $25 cheaper then the price at the time

Because the non-Japan branches of Nintendo are out of touch with both Ninty's fanbase and Ninty itself.

Official translation. On the official site. By the President of Nintendo, Mr. Iwata.

Yet you'd prefer to believe what Reggie, who heads the second-class North American branch, says.

Your right, it might not mean directly playing off the SD card. But your also wrong in only saying you can only download straight to the SD card.

They are making the process simpilar, and i am saying that you will be able to play directly off the SD card

It's a stretch, but they may be able to make the SD card slot HCSD compatible via a series of firmware updates. It still doesn't solve the issue.. I mean really, you can quadruple the wii's internal memory with a tiny SD card that costs 20 bucks.. what were they thinking storage wise? -_-

read number 2.

Your right, it might not mean directly playing off the SD card. But your also wrong in only saying you can only download straight to the SD card.

They are making the process simpilar, and i am saying that you will be able to play directly off the SD card

I never said anywhere in this thread that "you can only download straight to the SD card," denying that there'll be a simplification to the process. That IS the simplification to the process.

And when you say that we'll be able to play directly off the SD card, it is going against what the President of Nintendo said. You're spreading false information. Did you read the text next to the slide that explains the slide? "We will also make it so that you will need to go through just one process in order to transfer Virtual Console or WiiWare software stored on an SD card to the Wii console and then be able to play it."

And lol @ you naming that slide "pwnage"

Even the guys at IGN don't really know what's going on. They know you will NOT be able to load from SD, but their pretty confident that it will work like guitar hero. Meaning, that the wii will set aside say 300 blocks that can never be used. All your games will go to SD. then, when you want to play a game the wii, without you knowing it, will move the game from SD to the wii's internal memory. After you're done playing, it will move the game back to SD, once again, in the background.

Still, it's all speculation at this point.

Which is a horrible idea, but we'll revisit that when/if Nintendo announces that this is what they're doing.

Well, if they can get the game moving from SD to internal and back to SD without you knowing it and without any extra laod time, then why would it be bad? It would be the same system we have now, except we would have 2 gigs of space. It's not like you can play two games at once.

Though, I still think we need channel folders. It's stupid to give each game it's own channel when we could just have a single channel that lists all the games weve downloaded by system.

Only for people who have SD cards. Otherwise, the system update would be stealing a chunk of blocks from people who don't have extra storage on a system with already limited storage space. The system update would amount to forcing users to go out and buy SD cards and why? Because Nintendo would be taking away space they already paid for and now couldn't use at all.

Not all updates are mandatory. Like the photo channel update. They made you aware that the update would make the photo channel only read MP4 files, so thy let you choose.

Besides, it's not like you can't go into any walmart or bestbuy and just get a cheap card.

Aren't you unable to update further if you don't take all the updates sequentially?

usually, but it's well within nintendo's power to make it not mandatory. They've done it once already.

Hackers write.

Crackers crack.

Cyberkiddies make me smile.

The moment a person uses the term "hacker" inappropriately, I instantly know that you have a shallow understanding of anything related to subject itself.

OK, lemme get this straight.

This is faster because you can transfer games from your SD card instead of re-downloading them?

If this is true, how much faster, if it transfers a N64 game in like 5 seconds, isn't that really good? Whats the problem?

I never said anywhere in this thread that "you can only download straight to the SD card," denying that there'll be a simplification to the process. That IS the simplification to the process.

And when you say that we'll be able to play directly off the SD card, it is going against what the President of Nintendo said. You're spreading false information. Did you read the text next to the slide that explains the slide? "We will also make it so that you will need to go through just one process in order to transfer Virtual Console or WiiWare software stored on an SD card to the Wii console and then be able to play it."

And lol @ you naming that slide "pwnage"

1.) O.K you might not of ever said that you can only download games directly to the SD, but it seemed to me as if you are saying that downloading the games to the SD card was the solution, and not being able to play games directly off the SD card.

2.)If you read number 2, in the picture i sent to you. it says

" To make it so that the software stored on SD memory cards Can be played on wii consoles by going through much simpilar procedures.

This indicates that the software is ALREADY downloaded to the Sd card, and has nothing to do with downloading wiiware or VC games. it is talking about playing the software that is stored on the SD card.

3.) You may be right, and we will not be able to play games straight from the SD card, but there will be a simpilar process. Maybe you will be able to copy the information faster i do not know. But there is a storage solution and it will be easier then what we have right now.

4.) i could not decide what to name it :)

2) read #1.

3) Read what Iwata said. I am right because Iwata knows what he's talking about.
