I Highly recommend Etrian Odyssey

Etrian Odyssey has been sucking hours of my free time these past few days.  It is a seriously hardcore oldschool RPG, with a map-making mechanic that uses the touch screen.  It is obviously not made for people who don't like RPGs, but just about any fan of games like D&D or Wizardry will like it.

A friend in the USA sent me this game.  I love it!

It reminds me of the olde games  from around 20 years ago when we had to make maps on bits of graph paper as we went.  The touch screen on the DS is ideal for this - wish we had something like this then ....  The tools to do the mapping are great and I particularly like the "memo" option - very handy.

Some people might be put off at the beginning but I urge people to put a few hours into it.  At least wait until the mandatory mapping of the first section is completed before making a decision.  After the first section you do not "*have* to map it all to progress - although it helps in not getting lost :)

Excellent absorbing game - hope they do a sequel :)

My understanding is that this game is single-player only.  So why would you be worried about the cheaters cheating? 

Is there any way to go back to the main menu in this game?

I don't see that option, so I guess the only way to leave the game is to shut the DS while in the middle of the game. Is that correct?

I forgot i loved atlus games i'm so stupid for passing on Cntact cause of gamespots review but next pay day i will be buying Contact. Atlus always seems to get reviewed low but there games are really good in a JRPG perpective ad i guess reviews don't like JRPG's but for those who do Atlus is a god.peacebringer

Don't pass on Contact, it's a great game. Etrian Oddysee reminds me alot of playing D&D with my brother back in the day.

Atlus games are great, I just picked up EO and River City Ransom Ex.

Great game.. I love it. My favorite RPG. There, I said it. It's my favorite RPG. Well, I guess I'm just saying that because I'm into it. So I'll correct that statement and say it's definitely one of my favorites and the best on the DS. 

It is the most truest, most pure RPG experience.

Anyway, it's hardcore and can kick your butt. But it's worth it if you're nerdy enough to like this kind of stuff.

P.S those 3 games were also made when Monolith Soft was still helping Square make RPGs for them it'll be nice to see what kind of RPG Monolith Soft makes for the DS :)

i have lunar knight and i'm not having much more fun with it than i am playing Etrian. But i have both games and you own 1 so i guess your right:roll: 

I'm glad the general consensus is that Etrian Odyssey is a good game, because I've been waiting for it for ages (and its still in the post, but it should be here soon). I nearly bought the Japanese version but decided to hold out when I heard that Atlus had picked the game up. I'm looking forward to playing this game more than anything else right now.Extra_Life

If you're a fan of the old school RPGs or Wizardry, then you'll probably like it. But many people who call themselves "hardcore" RPGers are talking about J-RPGs. I suppose some were hoping for a traditional J RPG and were disappointed with a sort of western feeling one. Personally, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone except for those who like games such as Wizardry. 

Speaking of Etrian Odyssey, where is th eGamespot review?  I predict they are eithor going to really love it or really hate it.  what do you think?

It's sold in the states, it's a hard to find title because not many stores carry it, since it only attracts a certain type of gamer not many stores loaded up on it. You have a better chance of geting it online. 

I'm considering getting Etrian Odyssey...would someone who loved FFIII love this game? Since it's suppsed to be old-school, I think I'll like it...killjoy188
