I just bought a Wii for Skyward Sword (help thread, I suppose)...

...and yes I'm aware of the game recommendation thread, but I feel as it gets glossed over more often than not. With that said; I'm looking for the absolute gems on the console. I'd like to pick the games that are absolute must haves. This is what I've got on my list so far:

-Super Mario Galaxy 1&2

-Smash Bros Brawl

-Paper Mario

-New SMB

-Punch Out

-Donkey Kong Country Returns

-Muramasa: The Demon Blade

What games are escaping this list? If there's anything negative to say about any of these I'd appreciate hearing what people have to say. If you've got a great recommendation on a game, what makes you love the game so much?

Donkey kong jungle beat is pretty good if you missed out on the gamecube version. Also metroid trilogy is a great addition to anyones collection. Other then the games you mentioned I can't think of any morereal gems. The wii's library is pretty weak.

Not really sure what genre's you like, but i'll go by the different ones and give you what I think are the must haves for each one (not necessarily my personal preference). I wouldn't really list Paper Mario or Muramasa as must haves, Paper Mario isn't quite as good as its predecesors and Muramasa is an amazing artistical game but the gameplay is eh.

Fighting:

  • Tatsunoko VS Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars
  • Super Smash Bros Brawl

Platformers:

  • New Super Mario Bros Wii
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns
  • Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
  • (If youre a sonic fan, Sonic colors, otherwise its great but not a must have)

Action/RPG:

  • Twilight Princess
  • Okami
  • Monster Hunter Tri
  • Xenoblade Chronicles
  • Metroid: Other M

Racing:

  • Mario Kart Wii

Strategy:

  • Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (Don't let the score turn you off, its a GREAT game)
  • Dawn of Discovery (Amazing RTS game, it always gives you something to accomplish so its easy to sink a lot of time into)

First Person/Shooters:

  • Metroid Prime Trilogy (Of all Wii games, this is the single highest #1 must have for any gamer. One of the greatest trilogies of all time with updated lighting and control, seriously amazing)
  • Red Steel 2 (Best use of motion controls I've ever played, swordfighting is tons of fun)
  • And lastly, either depending on your preference: Goldeneye 007 or Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Now, as far as my PERSONAL must haves for which games I've enjoyed the most, it would be:

  • Xenoblade Chronicles (Not only the single best JRPG this generation, it's one of my favorite RPG's of all time up there with The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind and Knights of the Old Republic, its THAT good.)
  • Metroid Prime Trilogy (No more need be said, the trilogy is amazing and this game is worth three times what they charge for it)
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns (Just as good if not BETTER than the original DKC games on the SNES, and definitely right there with DKC2 as one of my favorite platformers ever)
  • Red Steel 2 (Best action game combat ever, swordplay feels so visceral and involved that I feel like a ninja, not to mention once you get the awesome combos and stuff you will just feel like a Ninja with how you fluidly devistate waves of enemies)
  • Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (Permadeath for party characters, high difficulty, and tactical thinking make this one of the most intense strategy games I've played. I can't tell you how many last stands I've made and held out just long enough to turn the tides because I played smart or would have been owned, its a huge rush of accomplishment)
  • Monster Hunter Tri (Every fight is like an epic boss-fight. Like epic fights? Like kicking ice-tigers in the face? GET IT NAO)
  • New Super Mario Bros Wii (Just like DKCR it pays huge respect to the originals while bringing new stuff to the table, this is the game that made me fall in love with gaming again)
  • Call of Duty Black Ops (Yes, the Wii version, even though I have a 360 and PS3. 10 dollars cheaper, no online fees, and I get to use my favorite control scheme. Not to mention its hands down the deepest and most fleshed out online system on the Wii)

Galaxy? Most gamers love it. Brawl? I fully agree, a must-have. Paper Mario? This is too a must-have game if you are looking for a funny and long single player game. New SMB? Ehhh...I have a very specific and brief review for that game. Check my profile if you want to know. Punch-Out? Thats definetely not a must-have. It's a just a mediocre-good game. DK? The game is great, but the controls are a mess. I had to skip the game for that reason. Muramasa? I don't have enough info to judge on this one. And I would add No More Heroes 1 and No More Heroes 2. They rock.

I TOTALLY forgot about No More Heroes. The first is DEFINITELY a must have, didn't particularly like how they changed up the combat in the second one though :(

Thank you very much for this:)

I forgot about the capcom fighter you listed! Metroid: Other M, as well. I'm in the US so unfortunately I can't get Xenoblade? Can I import that game, or is it unplayable on a foreign console? I've got the GC version of TP--unless you HIGHLY recommend the wii version over the gamecube one, I'll skip it. I actually bought the wii partially for the gc bc, as the new ones are phasing out that model.

You seem adament about MP:T. Now, I had serious issues with the control scheme on the GC version. In fact, I never even finished Metroid Prime for this reason. How is the control setup different? Strafing?

Again I really appreciate your post.:)

No problem! Yeah Tatsunoko VS Capcom is just as good if not better than SFIV imo, I had less trouble getting combos off than in Street Fighter :P

Unfortunately unless you mod your Wii to bypass the region lock you won't be able to import Xenoblade, didn't know which region you were in so I listed it. Normally I would recommend bypassing the region lock, but with as new as your Wii is I wouldn't chance it :P

The GCN version of Twlight Princess is the hands down superior version, the waggle controls in the wii version SUCK. its seriously the worst implementation of motion controls ever lol.

The control setup is TOTALLY different, I had the same issue as you with the first Prime on a friends gamecube, the controls were just too intrustive and I couldnt get into it. The wii version has bloom lighting added, and all three games (even 1 & 2 that were on the GCN) are pointer controlled just like Metroid Prime: Corruption. The main difference is that you don't have to hold a shoulder button to look up, and switching visors and scanning is much faster now. I can't recommend it enough, and its one of those you simple cant lose on. You can find it at gamestop for like 69.99, if you don't like it you can easily sell it online for 80 :P

I've heard the story both ways in regards to TP, but I'm not fond of useless waggle. That doesn't sound intriguing to me, but what does sound nice is widescreen support. I've been looking up MPT but boy the prices are high. I'm not going to spend that much on a game--perhaps I'll get lucky. I live in chicago and there are some obscure electronic stores that sell games that occasionally have no idea what they have. For example: A few years ago I saw a few boxed Dreamcasts for under $80 in a store that primarily sold jewelry.

*Mario Kart is coming with the system--I hesitated a bit, as I own a 3DS and will buy MK7 for sure.

I've also heard pikmin 2 is much improved with the control setup.

Anyways I appreciate the replies and glad the thread wasn't locked immediately.

See, the thing with MPT is that youre getting THREE games, each that are over 40 hours long each. When you look at the sheer amount of content in the game, it more than validates the price :P

So you chose to disrespect every single person in this forum instead?

If you have to ask for games you have no business playing them

Disrespect? How so? The Wii is an older console. I just bought one. I'm clueless as to what came out for it over the years as, since I didn't own it, I didn't pay much attention to it other than the games that were really critically acclaimed. I'm a little baffled how my posts in this thread come off as "disrespectful." I've used the recommendation threads over in the other forums and things do tend to get glossed over most of the time. Nobody seems to read back a few pages in them as they are 1000s of pages long. I'm working on getting a cart full of games in a shorter period of time. I felt people would take kindly to the way I voiced this in the op. They did, and I was thankful for that.

I wouldn't bother with Super Paper Mario. I was kind of bored with it. Add Mario Kart Wii, Okami, Metroid Prime: Trilogy, and Twilight Princess to that list and you're good though.

I recomend (as two hidden gems) Silent Hill Shattered Memories and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles the Crystal Bearers. Both are abosolutley awesome as long as you go in with an open mind.

Wow, Jayson, what is your problem? Heirren isn't the first guy to make an unstickied reccomendation thread, you need to take a chill pill or something.

Well the recommendation thread is there for a reason. Specifically so the board won't be cluttered with these types of topics. Not noting the thread is one thing, but seeing it and then just ignoring it is another, especially since TC could have just skimmed through the first page of the Recommendation thread and his question would have been answered.

I've got a hefty list of games. I'm going to start with the oldest first. I've heard MHT is great, but I think I may pick up the 3DS version of that one.

In regards to Kirbys Yarn--sorry but I've tried it and think it is garbage.

well, someone should tell him that it's not enjoyable, at least not compared to pretty much anything you can do if you have a life. even mourning the death of a loved one is more enjoyable than that.

4.Okami...bloom brush stroke is the hardest one to do.. when you get to the mr orange dance you will have a hard time lol...but awesome game and cool controls..

KBFloYd

Dude no lol, those games are so bad except Okami lol.

Force unleashed especially is nothing but WAGGLE, its not well implemented motion at ALL. The second force unleashed is infinitely better.

...and yes I'm aware of the game recommendation thread, but I feel as it gets glossed over more often than not.

Heirren

i would add the metroid primes and other m, resident evil 4, zelda twilight princess. thats all i can remember for now...

really? star wars force unleashed didnt feel like waggle to me at all...doing the force shockwave with the nunchuck was one of my fav things to do..also holding them with the force and controlling them by moving the nunchuck or analog stick.. i felt like i had the force in my hand...and i liked throwing my lightsaber at people...using lightning... and the ground pound....aside from sword swinging of course.

those are the only moves i used...

so your just looking at the fact that moving the wiimote around for the lightsaber was...um..waggle? what the hell kind of hater word is that...waggle term doesnt apply here... how do you waggle a lightsaber or sword? the exact way you waggle the wiimote... seriously that term doesnt apply here..

attacking in okami or twilight princess with the wolf can be considered "waggle" becuase the action does not match what the charater is doing.... but swinging the wiimote like a sword is as realistic as motion controls will get to mimicing a sword..

Dude, motion control for the light saver combat in the first force unleashed is the DEFINITION of waggle. It literally takes no skill or refined movements, you can flail your arms like you're havig a seizure and be just as effective as if you were actually trying to do something useful. Force unleashed 2 uses motion for the lighting, force push, lightsaber, and throwing enemies. It works GREAT. The general combat in the first game is plain bad, go play red steel 2 if you think that crap is realistic sword combat :?

red steel 2 was first person game... you cant compare it to force unleashed which is third person...it wont get any better than FU1 for 3rd person swordplay bro...

i never felt like i was waggling in force unleashed and the people that complained is what gimped the sequel and i am not playing that game in disgust.

the definition of waggle? flailing your arms like a seizure? what the hell kind of junk is this.....give me a list of good motion control games is then?

I would reccomend looking into...

Rune Factory: Frontier. It's like Harvest Moon but with dungeon crawling and item crafting added in. The largest complaint I have for this one is the runey system can be somewhat annoying, but I never considered it to be game breaking. My sister complains about the load times between areas but it never really bothered me.

And the newer one released earlier this month

Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny. Honestly haven't played this one yet, but the runey system has been removed, the load times have been sped up, and combat has been improved. The largest complaint I've heard (again haven't played it myself yet) is that the farming has been dumbed down. There is also a PS3 version.
