Does time pass as you are looking through the menu? Or is it frozen during that time?
I think it's paused, though I have never been late for a misson so wouldn't know if it actually does.
Actually... I don't think it's possible to fail a mission. I once left my DS unattended for an HOUR and nothing happened.
