For me I loved pokemon Diamond. I am looking forward for the 3DS release of pokemon rumble blast.Flame3DSBut wont that be a non traditional pokemon game?
I would start off with Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver (these two are practically the same; just slight variation in some wild Pokemon).
Why? Well, you can visit two regions in these games and they feature more of the original generations of Pokemon. The game itself is also packed with a bit more content compared to some of your other options.
If you like Pokemon HG/SS, consider trying out Platinum version or Black/White version. They're all good but i'd say it's better to start off with HG/SS if you just wanna try out a Pokemon game.
I think you should start off with the newest edition. Once you've played one pokemon you've played them all. Playing an older title won't make you any less/more prepared to play the newest edition, so just go ahead and jump right in with Pokemon Black or White.
I'd start with either Platinum or Heart Gold/Soul Siver.
Platinum is an enhanced version of Diamon and Pearl so don't start with those.
Don't start with Black and White because the other games on the DS will seem worse by comparison.
I am going to start w/ Emerald if the ten free GBA games actually include it.
So what is the deal w/ these Pokemon games? For each gen, the different versions are almost identical except for a few Pokemon you can collect? Is there are reason to get all three from each gen other than to collect the different wild Pokemon? And then there are the remakes... Confusing for a newcomer. I am pretty excited to check 'em out though. Seem like fun games.
I suggest you buy Pokemon Heart Gold or Soul Silver (it's almost the same) as this versions plays in the original pokemon region (Kanto) and the "new one" (Johto), it also has the first 151 pokemons and all the new ones. You will face the first 8 gym leaders of the series (Brock, Misty, and so on).
I own this game and it is extremely fun! I have spent already 150+ hours on it, and still haven't catch 'em all (true).
I assure you that you will truly enjoy this game as it is long and has many many side stories and stuffs to do!
Hope it helped!
I never played this game, what can i expect and whats a good one where i will get the best initial experience? Sorta like the ocarina of time of pokemon games. Also what can i expect, im not too fond of slow turn based jrpgs but im loving chrono trigger because its so original and i like the ff series.Firstinstimct
Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver. :D

Where was that ever confirmed though?
Hmm... Probably Black and White and then wait for future games. Just because it's the most up to date games and it should keep you occupied for years.
Have fun catching all 649! ;)
You can't go wrong with any of them. My personal favorites go like this
Tied for 1st place: Heartgold/ White Really can't deicide which is the better game.
2nd: The Hoenn Games I spent alot of time on them as a kid
Don't start with the GB Pokemon games. There is no way you can transfer Pokemon from Gen I-II to any of the future installments. If you really want to try out Gen I and Gen II, get the remakes instead.
The first Pokemon game I ever got was Red on my original GameBoy. Then I didn't touch the games again until about 4 months ago when I got Black. I didn't see much progression in the series TBH. Probably part of the reason fans love the series but I'd hoped it had gone down a path more like what Persona 3 was.
Anyway, from my extremely limited experience, I found Black to be very easy to jump into. The PvP stuff and wifi bits and pieces were a nice addition too. Had quite a bit of fun trading pokemon over wireless with my friends (and was amazed to have voice chat whilst doing so). Quite impressive really.
Anyway the game seemed like a good, basic RPG. Not too difficult and a decent variety of Pokemon with varying strengths/weaknesses. If you choose your team wisely it'll be a cake walk but fun.
I would start with either Heart Gold/ Sould Silver or Black/ White. Or if you have access to a GBA player of some sort (a DS :P) Fire Red/ Leaf Green might be better since they're remakes of the originals.

I agree with this. I've played the original crystal version from the second generation and there was a good amount of things to do.
they are all pretty much the same game. In an effort to keep them fresh I only play one every few years.
A good trend I've noticed: The newer the game, the more accessible. I haven't actually played Black and White, but I'm assuming they are more accessible and probably have more features. But any of the Pokemon games are pretty accessible, really. Although as a confused 5 year old, I could not figure out how to get out of the first room in Crystal... It was one of my earlier games, mind you. I had no idea those were supposed to be stairs. Shut up!

Where was that ever confirmed though?
Nope. At least not on Nintendo's website which is the only thing I really believe....

Didn't think so. :P
Not only that, but if you go deep into the games, there is much to do, training, battling, breeding, etc., with other people, since you can do some of that stuff online.Get all of them, ALL OF THEM. If you are forced to choose though definitely go for HeartGold or SoulSilver. But seriously this games are retardedly addictive
