Here for your enjoyment. I thought it was interesting.

Note:

This is a very old IGN thread. The thread is about Metroid Prime. It asks what people thought of it when they first heard it was going to be in first person. In case you don't know, when people first heard about it, the reaction was very negative. Most people though it was a bad idea. However, with the Release of Metroid Prime, the critics, and fans were all over-joyed. The game before release won plenty of E3 awards, and on release, won plenty of Game of the Year awards, including here at GameSpot. This is a look at Metroid Prime before it's critical acclaim.

Ya it's that old.

While you guys read this, do you think it would be good for Nintendo to try and release other IP's in first person on the Wii? Maybe Zelda, or Star Fox?

You should probably relate this to the Wii in some way because as it stands this has nothing to do with it.

It's fun to see what people thought, yeah.. I wasn't around on forums when the first person view got announced, but as soon as I saw screenshots I was like "Wait.. is this Metroid? Looks freaking awesome!". Loved the start of GC.

That thread proves that developers should never listen to forum dwellers while making a game.

I always consider this the Nintendo forum :?

I guess you can argue that this is related to Metroid Prime Trilogy, but just in case, I tied it to something Wii related.

Fanboys, forum dwellers will always complain. They beg for change but when they finally get it they don't want it anymore. And this is why, developers should never, ever listen to people on forums.

I always think to myself, "If I was making a game, I'd look at this stuff all the time!" Then when I think about it, I bet it'd be pretty stressful trying to please everyone.

Agreed. A Rogue Squadron type game but with Star Fox trappings and some hyper styIised graphics sounds good though :D

Well the issue was that basically because they saw it was in First Person, and they know there will be shooting, they all immediately assumed it would just be an FPS, and not seem like a proper Metroid game, which seems stupid from here, but it's fair enough. The game turned out amazingly in the end though, keeping faithfully to its roots while expanding the game perfectly into 3D :D

I like this comment from Jakester85:

"However, I think we were asking the impossible to make Metroid in 3d and have a third person view."

And I laugh. In my pants.

I use to think that developers should SOMEWHAT listen to the fans.. but after a while, I had a change of heart. Developers should never listen to forum dwellers, fans, gamers who do not work in the industry. When you try to please everyone, it usually utterly fails. It's hypocritical in itself because you could never make everyone happy. Someone, somewhere will always complain even if a game is one of the best. People are so proned to negativity. They dwell in it.

Those were interesting haha! It was such a masterful game and before it was released people were iffy. Now it's ranked amongst the best of the best.
