I hope the failure rate isn't 360 failure rate. I had to send mines in too. The disc drive started to sound like a lawnmower and then I eventually ended up with disc read errors. Pretty disappointing, seeing that I only had the system for about a month.

I called Nintendo and they were really nice. They said I should have a packaging label in a couple of days and that it will take a week to 10 days to get the Wii back. My guess is they will give me a new Wii. I hate that this happened, but considering I have owned every nintendo system since NES and this is the first time I have had problem then I shouldnt complain too much. I just hope this fixes the problem. I have read some threads where people have gone through 2-3 Wii's before the problem is fixed.

I had the same black dot problem - most likely due to the GPU overheating when in standby mode. The replacement process takes 3-4 weeks total. The process is painless, except on the new Wii you can't edit your previously created Miis, which sucks.

The wii failure rate is under 1%. Xbox 360 on the other hand is 30-50%.

Most of the defective wiis are because a defective heatsink on the gpu slowly kills the system. Those two to three wii guys are likely lying or being stupid and placing the video game console near a sub-woofer or other amplifier for their tv sound systems.

Sub-woofers and other devices with a magnet in them can foul up a game console if they are in close proximity.

If you read your manual and used the brain you would have told Nintendo you had vc content on the wii as well as any points. Otherwise as the manual tells you that content is not transfered to another wii since you didn't indicate to do it.

Why people do not realize they need to inform that their is a game disc cart or other content in their game system or pc or car cd-player when they send the unit for maintenance is beyond me.

The gpu overheats due to a defective heatsink. The damage occurs when the system is used. The fan isn't what protects the system it's the heatsinks. A defective heatsink doesn't siphon all the heat away from the circuit board whereupon the leftover heat slowly damages the componets. A motherboard failingdue to a defectiveheatsink is often prettynoticeable since the entire system stops workingwhile a gpu failing to a defective heatsink can often take months to be noticeable.

Just so you know. I did tell them I wanted all my content saved and was informed they would do their best to transfer everything if needed. This also wasnt anything I caused. I am very careful with my electronics. The Wii had its own shelf on my entertainment system tower, and it was kept away from direct heat. As for those that were saying its the Wiiconnect24 that caused the problem this is one instance that doesnt prove that. I actually dont leave wiiconnect 24 on. I basically only turn it on for update downloads and to use the shop channel. From what I have read and heard, this problem is not as widespread as people think. A friend of mine is a district manager for ebgames/gamestop and said they have quite a few customers who have had the problem and they try to return it to the store instead of sending it to Nintendo. Its nowhere close to the number of people that have had problems with their 360'sbut its becoming a common problem.

I didn't do anything to my Wii, its adult owned and just sat quietly under the tv. A couple days after buying RE4 it started to make this lawnmower noise. Just like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsmBFP1LtwA after a couple days it stop reading discs all together. I'm sort of disappointed, I only had the Wii for a month.

It's a common problem. Nintendo will probably send you a repair package.

Wiiconnect 24 just made the gpu failure appear quicker. The defective heatsink is largely found in the launch units and without wiiconnect 24 on usually takes about ten months to appear. Wiiconnect 24 just makes it appear much quicker.

As for the drive issues some people are having that can occur in any dvd-rom device. Nothing to be concenered about. It isn't chewing the discs for instance like the xbox 360 did.

Did they give you a new one or did they actually repair the one you sent in? And did you get any freebies? I heard Nintendo gives freebies here and there.

Freebies often depends on how polite and understanding the rep is.

Here is a link to a picture. Its not very good but you get the idea. Change it to full size and you can see the dots below the steps. Usually the will be along the outling of an object.

No, but also when you get it back you will not be able to edit your Mii's so keep that in mind everyone!
