With rumors swirling around saying that developers already have development kits for the DS successor, it's more than likely that we'll see the DS2 (or something else) very, very soon.

If the DS2 came out later this year, will you buy it on launch? Or like myself, are you going to wait and see the price and what games will be on it first, than decide?

For me, I'm going to wait. I'm still loving my DSi and I also want to wait until more games come out for the next DS. But I know I'll get it sooner or later, no matter what.

Also, doesn't it kind of suck that there's already rumors of DS2 in the works, yet Nintendo barely scratched the surface with DSiWare? I'm a little letdown and disappointed. I like the DSiWare and games on it, but it could've been so much more.

It's a bit of a bummer.

Anyway, back to the poll question, what will you guys do?

They aren't going to make the ds2 any time soon i dont think, the ds is still going strong and making tons so there's no point, but if it did i always get a system 6 months after launch because they could make different colors or like the wii, not put wii remote jackets in at the beginning

It doesn't have to be this year, but anytime a new handheld is released I'm not going to buy it until a second version/model is released. I still have way too many DS games still to play.

You never know. The DS was released when the GBA was still going strong, even if they didn't intend it to be the next main handheld.

Back to the topic, I would wait until there were exclusive games that interest me to be released.

Unless the system itself had some super special awesome features and I had to have it as soon as possible.

Yeah, basically this. Ultimately depends on the price and release games...

I never buy consoles at launch. It's tends to be almost impossible anyways. And there are never enough launch titles that interest me.

Fact is if Nvidia really won the contract to have Tegra 2 in this DS last fall, then usually that means its roughly a year out.

Reports came out last fall of T2 being in it, so a fall 2010 release isn't too unlikelyy

This thing could have dualcore 1Ghz CPU, i'm thinking it may be a borderline smartbook too

More than likely Nintendo is already developing titles for it

I'm sure DSiware will carry over to this handheld, infact they'll probably just rename it DSware, they will probably have an improved DS Shop too

I'd get it launch. I love me a good launch night party. Gimme a portable Smash Bros, Pokemon, or new Mario Kart and i'm down

i doubt this thing exceeds $200 retail

the Zune HD has the current highest end Tegra in a retail product and it sells for a good profit at $199.99 with 16GBs memory

i'm also thinking only one screen will be touch again, but multi-touch, both LCD and both 480x320

What makes me annoyed is that nintendo releases different versions of their handhelds, with some improvements. I didn't buy the first DS, because luckily i learned about the ds lite which was supposed to come out a little later. This isn't very deep thinking, but if you buy the first one, there will be another one that comes out later which might be better than the first. I will probably buy the first one, try to hold onto it until it falls apart, then buy the newest version. But then, the first one will probably have a very dim lit screen, amiright? Like the first game boy advance and the first DS.

darth-pyschosis

One potential issue with multitouch is that it traditionally means a capacitive touch membrane. Generally these behave very differently from the resistive touch screens, which is what the current DS uses. Specifically they tend to be more responsive, though aren't as precise and do not support conventional styli. Some existing DS games might not work properly as a result.

Then again resistive multi-touch screens have been developed. As have capacitive ones without the aforementioned limitations. I've not yet heard of a product that uses either, though that doesn't rule out the possibility of Nintendo doing such.

I'd wait and also be abit upset that Nintendo would release a new handheld right after releasing an update to the DS.

Depend on its launch games, upcoming games and my financial situation.

If it launches with a Mario or Zelda game my purchase is damn near assured though.

I think with all this talk of super great graphics we have to remember these things

Nintendo will need two screens. Manufacturing screens at high resolutions costs money. Esspecialy since they'll need two of at the same resolution

I highly doubt Nintendo will put two 640x480 screens on this thing

480X320 is about the best (so pretty much same res as PSP/iPhone)

Another thing, if this thing has a CPU clocking in around 1Ghz like Tegra 2 is suppose to support up to 1Ghz, that will be spread across both screens

Kinda like how there is a 67Mhz 3D CPU in DS lites that renders the 3D stuff and usually the top screen, and a 33Mhz CPU that handles the touch screen.

If it this had, say a 1Ghz CPU, then you have to split the CPU's attention between rendering the images on two screens

a game like Pokemon may not be hurt by this but if you're putting 3D objects on both screens, then they need to be divided evenly to re-produce the same quality of graphics on both screens

Thats why so may DS games have 2d menu's on the touch screen it can't replicate the graphics of the other CPU

so lets say we have a smash bros game on this new DS2, and the stages span BOTH screens , top and bottom. Well, lets say the CPU @1Ghz, wouldn't the max CPU speed you could dedicate to each screen be 500Mhz or somewhere less than that? So that would not replicate Wii level graphics, it'd have GameCube level graphics

Additionally, if nintendo keeps the flip open/close design of the DS with this one, i could see it being big like a smartbook but with 4inch screens

No, just, no.

Unless they start releasing games exclusive to this 'DS2', I probably will never buy it.
I'm still doing fine with my DS and the fact that it can play all the GBA games I have.
I never plan on buying the DSi, and I probably won't buy this DS2 either.

I agree with SuperfastSonic, they keep on releasing all these different versions of the DS. DS, DS Lite, DSi, DS XL, DS2. Geez! Even the Playstation hasn't gotten that many different versions and it's been out longer than the Dual Screen.

I still need to upgrade from my old DS to a DSi badly, so regardless if this will come this year it'll have to wait.

Just so you know we're talking about a totally new handheld successor, not a hardware spin of the current DS model.

When people say dsiware is too underdeveloped and new for a new console, all I can think is that the new console (if it comes out in the near future) will be built on dsiware (obviously a name change there though). I have a feeling we'll be seeing a ds2 dl content through a dsiware type set up.

Of course the DS2 will have exclusives. It will be a completely new generation of handheld. Not just a revision or spin-off.

I will be pre-ordering it at the first opportunity!

I think a November 2010 launch is possible. Give me a new Mario Kart game and a decent puzzler at launch and I'll be a happy bunny!

I just hope that the DS2 isn't just an improved version of the iPod Touch. It would need something unique if they wanted me to throw out my DSi, like finger-movement recognition(like U-force, only not rubbish) as well as the tried-and-tested tilt-sensor.

Presumably it will still have at least one massive advantage over the Touch: Physical Buttons!

I would wait to see the price first, and make my decision from there.

I would get it for sure, however.

I have a massive DS gaming backlog so I'll be quite happy to wait until the DS2 has been out for a year or so, to give me a chance to clear some of it and also to let the DS2 catalogue build up a bit.

It would depend on the construction of the unit. It was pretty obvious that the original ds was due for an overhaul from the start, so if this next piece of hardware gives that same vibe, I'll wait. Otherwise, I'll purchase it on day one.

I also think Nintendo plans on releasing it sooner rather than later, mostly because of apples push on the handheld market.
