Since I have 1080hd and im really wondering if they are making an update which supports hd and makes a huge difference on how you play Zelda, Metriod, GH3. Do you think this is going to happen or not?

You'd have to update the internal hardware itself....it'd be pretty sweet if they could do it with an update though :).

If Nintendo dropped the ball, why does Nintendo still kicking everyones a$$es each month in sales? HD is not a factor of its success.

Not really, since the number of people that have either of those is still just a minority believe it or not.

I don't even have 480p

They should make an hd wii and a non one, but they would have to update the actual games too.

Now if they had a non hd 360.......

Developers would need to choose which console they would make a game on. The HD one or the non HD one. It would be just like the problem with the 360 core and premium. The core is holding back all the other 360s that have a hardrive since the core can't load things off of the hardrive in-game. Research GTA4 and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Yeah right... 1080i could be done easily on the Wii, 1080p is a different story though.

Maybe the wii is already capable of HD graphics, remember all that talk about the capabilites of the wii when it first came out 'tip of the ice berg' stuff. It could be that Nintendo are choosing not to use it in order to keep the development costs down. Besides that If you look at smg those graphics look really nice and that is only after a year of the console being out, imagine what the graphics will look like when developers start pushing even more out of the little white box. I bet there will be some stunning games in the future.

They could do it but the games would need to have the option to run at a higher mode. Games don't magically increase rendering settings without someone programming it in. Also, if the games did have the option it would be like playing on a computer that barely hits spec for the title. You would see slow down all over the place. The CPU / GPU needs the speed to run at the resolution in the first place. You would probably see draw distance shorten dramatically or something else in the rendering have to be given up to make it possible. In short, even if they did pull it off we would start complaining about what they gave up to make it happen. We need to accept that this is just the way the Wii is. Nintendo better find a way to make HD resolutions show up next gen (and cost effectively) so we don't have to keep talking about the graphics limitations of nintendo anymore. It will be hard though because the graphics are really getting set by the PC gaming market. And without investing the same amount of money into the hardware consoles will always be behind.

Hardware is very capable but if they did it would not have much effect on current games because they are still made to support 480p.

i dont think itd run games good.

hy would you crank up the resolution on a pc game when every other thing is at low?

I know pcs arent completely the same as consoles but same idea.

And besides, games have to have high resolution textures too.ever see code monkeys? you know how its pixelated, theres lots of pixels on your tv displaying one in the show. same idea

You guys saying the Wii doesn't have the power to do 1080i have no idea what you're talking about. Old computers over a decade old that had 1/10th the power of the Wii could do HD-like resolutions. However, it does use up a lot of the available power to do higher resolution graphics so either the frame-rate or the detail (# of polygons, textures, & effects) would have to be scaled back. Still, don't say the Wii can't do HD graphics when old pentium 2's with 64MB of RAM and a crappy Video card could do resolutions higher then 480p.

but it cant. the software in the wii, currently, doesnt allow for higher resolutions.

Just get this straight, higher resolution =/= better graphic. GeOW still looks better than GUN when played in SD vs HD. HD makes a difference, but its not like the wii would be putting out x360/ps3 stuff it it were in HD

No, the hardware is NOT capable. Ok, technically it CAN run in HD, but no games would run. The special effects would cause the system to chug because sudenly it has like 8x more work to do. On top of that, texture sizes need to be larger on higher res games, and the wii doesn't have the memory storage capacity to keep them loaded all at once while the game runs. It will not happen on the wii, mark my words.

Being restricted by software/firmware is different then not being powerful enough.

I agree about the Dolby Digital, but I don't really think 1080x is needed at all. 720 could be nice, but I'm ok with 480p for this generation

Resolution means nothing if no one programs textures to take advantage of the high resolutions. The machine does have to be more powerful to render the complex textures, higher polygon count, effects, etc.If theWii were given a firmware update to render HD, thecurrent game would look the same because no one programmed them for HD.Quake did run at a high resolution but definitely couldnt be considered "HD" by today's standards, because the machines at the time could never process all the effects.

at the end of the day the wii doesn't need HD. It is all about fun games and an intense playing ability. What is the point of having a game that looks exactly like real life? Take a walk down the street, it's the same, plus you get some fresh air! I admit that Nice looking graphics do lure me to games, but SMG has fantastic graphics and the Wii is only a year old, I imagine that next year Nintendo will be able to push more out of the Wii and we will be satisfied, until the next gen.

I wish the Wii atleast could do:

720i with 30fps

Why? Cuz, it looks bad and blurry on a HDTV. Don't care about progressive if it means that the games looks good on a HDTV.

Gran Turismo 4 runs at 1080i on the ps2. And there are a few games on the xbox that support 720p..though up-scaled so I don't know if that counts. The Wii could get up to 720p easily and probably could upscale games(thats different than natively running at that resolution). It would be nice to have the Wii channel menu run at 720p and above.

Yeah! 720 - Photo channel and Internet Channel would be great! The Wii Internet Channel is better then the others especially with the USB-keyboard compatibility. The only thing missing is 720 rez. Not many sites is optimal for 480p :P

720i requires less CPU then 720p, if I'm not wrong. So I think the Wii stillcould get away with it.
