If each franchise was treated equal with the amount of sequels and spin offs I would have to go with Metroid. Futuristic Sci-fi beats Medival (Zelda) which beats Mario. Unfortunately there are only a handful of Metroid games. Mario has the most variety though... so if I was going with the current available listing of games who wouldn't choose 50+ over any of the other types? And it is really nice that people keep putting Kirby in these polls... makes me laugh a bit.
Metroid Prime made me smile again, its an excellent game, i love Zelda too, but TP isnt as good as Metroid Prime, so until i see a new Zelda, Metroid is my favorite Nintendo franchise.
There are platformers that come close to Mario but nothing comes close to Pokemon. Everything else in the library is done better elsewhere so it's like if you're stuck with one franchise you pick the one that you can't get anywhere else.
You can't get exactly Mario quality but you can get close.
