Nope i disconnect my Wii every nite due to overheating and internet channel always worx for me when i plug it back in!!!

If you go on Wii Shop channel, it will tell you that there is a system update. Not much need to rely on WiiConnect24 to notify you when there are updates. If you are expecting messages from buddies, then turn on standby mode. 

On another note, by turning standby mode off, I save about $1.50 a month on my energy bill.
