Project Hammer rumor comes up. He reiterates concerns we've heard, still its a rumor.

However, Matt said he's talked to another studio who had a "hardcore game", and Nintendo told them to "mix that one up" as well to allow the "mainstream" to play it.

More minigames and non-games. Enjoy your gaming future. :)

I've read a report of the podcast who is slightly different. Link.

I'm not sure not who to believe. The report or the hater? Hmmm....

Erm why would Nintendo cancel Project Hammer for being "too hardcore" when it looked like a dumbed-down version of Zelda?

I don't believe that Nintendo is forcing devs to do anything. They don't have that kind of power. If Nintendo started telling devs what to do, the devs simply would not make games for Nintendo. Period.

As far as Project Hammer is concerned , there's only one reason Nintendo would cancel the game: It wasn't fun to play. Hammer looked promising at last years E3, but it also looked kind of generic. So if it is cancelled--only rumor so far--then it's probably a good idea for them to do so now rather than release a crappy game later.

My two cents.

They beat dev's and publishers with a large stick to bend them to their will back in the SNES days. They submitted to it because Ninty were the powerful market leaders and if they wanted to make money it had to be Nintendo's way. It was easy for them to ditch Ninty during the N64 and Cube days because they stopped selling, nothing to lose.

Just a random point :)

I'm a diehard Nintendo fan and I also listened to the podcast; from the way they talk, it does sound like Nintendo is encouraging games that are more focused on the "casual" gamer. If this is true, I must say that I'm really worried. I've always been a big Nintendo supporter and I support the whole "casual" gaming thing...but they can't forget about the hardcore. I love the approach EA is taking, specifically with Madden 08. It has all the modes of the other versions + online play + mini-games. They are making it accessible to the casual gamer, but still leaving all the elements for the hardcore fans. As long as Nintendo keeps the 2 seperate I think Wii could take this generation. I mean...the last thing I want is a Zelda mini-game fest.

Red Steel , Godfather , Scarface , Manhunt 2 , NFS:Carbon, Farcry , Splinter Cell.....not very casual.

The way i see it is that ubisoft who has had a majority of the game released so far has really screwed nintendo. Cheap and rushed ports for the most part. They have 2 or 3 major releases due for launch in ssmbb and metroid prime3 (galaxies soemtime i dunno when). they know those will sell well and will sell systems. So i see it as nin telling other developers to take there time on the more hardcore ones and put out some casual games out sooner . It will benifit us all if the mroe harcore ones come out after dev have understood the system and know how to utilize it.

it would be IMHO i big mistake for ninty to put the majority of there focus on casuals. its the real gamer or hardcore that buys alot of softwear. a casual normaly does not by near the amount of games. plus its almost garanteed that thay will get bord after a while and move on to something else. Hopefully this rumor will not turn out to be fact.

The causal market has been neglected for far too long since the Sonysoft era and as such the games industry has been wilting with little 'new gamers' entering the fold. Developers had to rely on the whims of existing gamers and what sells to these 'long term gamers now called hardcore' players. Theres no need to be worried about Ninty wanting more causal games it's just redressing the balance. The hardcore games will be plenty but there will be just as many causal games. That's not a bad thing. Many people won't buy it but enough will.Sidenote causal games not not equal rubbish games.

Then hopefully these causal gamers will turn into hardcore gamers loyal to Ninty just in time for the next gen. The Wii will always be a entry (a wonderful one at that) level console and offers something differrent to the powerhouses.
