I know, it's crazy. It's like peanut butter being upset with jelly or the religious right being upset with the Republican party but it's happened.

In a future update (coming very soon) Nintendo is going to replace MP3 playback with AAC. Now this is just for the Photo Channel and Excite Truck will still use MP3's.

This irks me though for someone who has thousands of MP3's they all become useless on the Wii.

Now I'm sure you're saying "Steve just don't download the update that changes the format to AAC"

To that I say my name is Jason and it's just not just the format that's changing in the channel. There's also going to be the ability to customize it with pictures of your own.

For people who would like to read the entire story here you go

November 21, 2007 - Nintendo is planning an optional update to its Wii Photo Channel this December which will, if downloaded, replace MP3-music playback compatibility with support of the AAC audio format. In addition, gamers will be able to personalize their Wii Menu by replacing the Photo Channel icon with a digital picture of their own.

Writes Nintendo on its official website: "Consumers with MP3 compatible Photo Channels will have the option of updating their Photo Channel to version 1.1, which replaces MP3 compatibility with the ability to play AAC files. AAC files provide a greater sound quality than an MP3 of the same size. This new compatibility will work with MP4 audio files in the .m4a format. Additionally, you can now choose to have the songs play back in a random order."

Any Wii consoles sold after December will automatically feature the latest version of Photo Channel. Gamers who already own the console will have the option to install the new update.

"Please note that once the Photo Channel has been updated to version 1.1, the channel will no longer be able to play MP3 format music files," writes Nintendo. However, this update will not have any bearing on in-game playback of MP3 music. "Wii games that currently have features which use MP3 music files will continue to use the MP3 file format. These Wii games will not be compatible with the AAC files," the company adds.

For the link please click HERE

So yeah, I'm irked at Nintendo and I wonder why they made the switch. Heck just keep them both.

 i did not even knew i could play mp3 on my Wii

now that i know this, i may not get the update.. i do not care about personalizing the photochannel with one of my pics :P If they make something else available then i`ll updated. (It seems that i would not play music on my Wii much anyway :P )

I dont get why Nintendo does stuff like this. its not the first time they have made a weird and confusing move. Instead of updating it properly they are going out of their way to get rid of a heavily used feature and replacing it with another....

WHY DONT THEY JUST HAVE BOTH!!!!!!

Just convert your MP3s to AAC format. AAC is intended as the successor to MP3 anyway, so the converted AAC files should still prove useful in the future.

but it seems kinda silly to do that seeing as to go through all the trouble to convert an MP3 to AAC for use in one medium is just odd and unneccesary. If what you say is true and AAC will replace MP3 in the future, its best if Nintendo holds off on the update until its a more "popular" format. I know that its use has to start somewhere, and thats cool...just not on the Wii...not yet.

You lose quality then because you're taking already compressed audio and then compressing it again.

Throw them on an SD card, then open the Photo Channel and select music and then find the songs you want to listen to.

For me this is a non-issue. I don't use the Photo Channel to listen to my music. In fact I think it is a waste of energy to use the TV to play back only music. I am not trying to be "Green", but I do have to pay the light bill.

If AAC is better than MP3, then why are you complaining? Is it too difficult to convert your MP3 files to AAC?

Well the compression changed since the Wav. When it was the conversion between Wav to MP3, the compression sucked. I think the compression should be better. By the way, I'm not a multimedia geek.

This is a pretty dumb move, and honestly I don't get it, (probably has something to do with royalties for using mp3, or the body behind aac bribing nintendo,) but I've never used the wii for that anyway.

However, I love nintendo as much as the next fanboy, but like any company, they make mistakes. And as fanboys, we have to pretend to not notice stuff like region locking, lack of ethernet port, and refusal to use an HDD :P

Not sure what my point was, but the bottom line is that no company is perfect, nintendo included, and while they piss me off sometimes I wouldn't buy a 360.

one thing i dont understand is why wont they allow both ?:| and Second, why not create a simple music channel since they know people use the photo channel for mostly music? :| And third, to be able to add a photo to the ch. icon is kinda stupid, why not allow us to customize the whole menu bg with a image of our choice instead of a icon? :|

Except MP3 and AAC were both created by the Fraunhofer Society, and are both MPEG standards. The exact same groups are involved with both standards.

The only reason I could possibly think of is that the Wii doesn't have enough onboard storage space to support both MP3 and AAC. And I really hope that's not the case.

No, that's nothing but a few k, heck you could fit the code on a floppy

The only reason I can think of is that AAC is a lot smaller then MP3for the same quality.

But as we saw in this very topic, people aren't willing to give up their MP3 files or convert them to AAC.

So why won't Nintendo allow both? It just doesn't make sense.

they must be paid off or something.

I wish Nintendo would just make a music channel....

They make check Mii Out and things like that but they wont do a Music channel.

Its just baffling. You would think we would have one from th begining but the most we can do is listen to songs while were in the photo channel and now most peoples music will be unplayable and people wont bother to convert it.

That's pretty lame, I may hold off on the update....but this brings up a question If I do not download this update, will this prevent me from downloading future updates? I'm assuming any future updates will update whatever has not been updated on the console... so is there no avoiding this poor update?

I agree. Very stupid mistake. So many people use MP3s and many don't know how to transfer to the ACC format and many others won't even bother. They could have just add both but nooooo. It just makes no f'n sense. Let's hope that in the next update, they fix the problem.

It's not a system update. You have to go to Wiiware and select the update for the photo channel from there. It's like the update for the everybody vote channel.

Not download. Just can play your MP3 or if updated ACC files from an SD card in the photo channel. You can use it too in games like ExciteTruck and that swimming game. (forgot the name)

I never did it myself but I saw it the options while I've played it at EBgames. If you have MP3 songs on your SD card, you should check in the options, not sure where, in the sound part I suppose. Shouldn't be too hard to find.

I have no idea how to get music on an sd card. I'm gonna go shove my ipod into the memory card slot and see what happens. And why do they let you put yourmusic on the game that already has the gnarliest music ever.

Just like Machiner is pointing out I understand the update is optional but the problem is that MP3 to AAC isn't the only part to that update.

I'd hate to miss out on new features for the channel or the console because I don't want to lose the ability to play MP3's

It would be nice if they made for the format update one update on it's own and not linked to anything else with the channel, unfortunately that wont be the case.

Well, they're keeping the MP3 format for Excite Truck still, so just pop that game into your Wii and play 'em from there. I mean, you have to go into the photo channel to listen to music, why not go into a game and do the same thing? It's all the same.

If you don't have a copy of the game, you can buy them for cheap nowadays. Ebay it if you really need it. Plus, you get a game!

You might want to give Nintendo a call then.

See they think the Wii is for playing games, voting on questions, making personal avatars, voting on personal avatars, catching the news, watching the weather, messing with photos, playing music, playing and playing WITH video, watching video of games, getting DS news and demos, and physical fitness.

So I mean if it's only for playing games then Nintendo has REALLY got to update their site.

when is every one gonna get it ,, the wii is basically a gaming console not a multimedia device, you want a multimedia device go pay 600 -400 for a ps3/360 or a pc which you got, , obviously , it shouldnt matter if wii supported avi instead of mp3 as wii is focused on gaming and nothing more sure you get news weather and internet as well as a photo channel , it is not a music device,, as it doesnt have the hard drive for it,

Worst.......arguement........ever.

One of the most popular music players right now is the iPod shuffle, that has half of the storage the Wii does.

Going on your logic the shuffle is not a music device either.

well this first line says optional update so the people who dont want aac playback and rather stick with mp3. and i really i dont have any problem with this all my songs are aac. And i dont see i mean hear a difference between aac and mp3 sounds the same quality to me but if there is a difference that means im deaf or i have hearing loss. and hasnt it the music idustry gone through so many compressing audio sure a few kb is gone but you hvae to admit we ARE advancing in technology every year my hdtv that is 1080 could be outdated by a 1440 or something like that or next year we could have a compression audio that is good that its like they are actually playing in front of us live! and it could be only like an average of 25kb. well im prepared to be owned so go ahead unleash everything you got jason
