Gamecube wouldn't have been viewed as a "secondary" choice I bet. Hell, not even as kiddie when "compared to the competition". Why Nintendo didn't do this, I'll never know. That woulda been badass and a great competition for Halo.

I wonder how different Nintendo would have turned out now (with the Wii/Wii U) had they gone this route with one of their bigger IPs.

I doubt an online Metroid Prime would have helped Nintendo in that generation. Gamecube would have still had a lacking third party support and it still had to compete with a console that had a massive brand loyalty, larger library, and DVD support (which was a huge plus back then).

Nintendo views are different than other companies, they are not too fond of the online multiplayer and more into local play

They want people to get together and play and have fun.. at least thats what i did read a while ago.

Metroid Prime didn't need multiplayer. It was one of the most revered games for its generation period end of story.

If you've ever played Metroid Prime, it should be clear that it's really not that sort of game.

Prime 2 did have local mulitplayer, but it was more of an experiment. Only so-so.

@FFCYAN: you could argue the same about a lot of games though, like The Last of Us. They somehow added great multiplayer to a great single player story game.

Game doesn't need multiplayer, the game is not a shooter. It's a first person adventure game where you happen to shoot things. Plus, at least for the original two games on the Cube, the controls aren't exactly good enough to allow for serious competitive play. it's basically "lock on and blast to shit." They tried split screen MP in Metroid Prime 2 and it kind of failed. It wasn't a terrible mode, but it definitely was not that good compared to other shooters.

No, thanks. Metroid Prime isn't the type of game that needs to have an MP mode in it.

Would have been great but only if it was done in the same vein as Metroid Prime Hunters which had Online Multiplayer with Voice chat

Nintendo would have garnered more interest in the Gamecube had they not made a purple cube with a handle that resembled a lunchbox. I loved my Gamecube, but the entire image of it was lacking. I used to get a huge amount of crap from my friends for having a Gamecube.

Considering that Metroid Prime was the best MP game, and Metroid Prime Hunters was the worst MP game... No. Metroid Prime is fine as-is.

Not that I think MPH is a bad game. I actually enjoyed it, bought it two or three different times. But it had frustrating controls, a lame and short campaign, and ocd-antagonizing lore. The multiplayer could have been a lot better as well, but part of the problem was it was on the DS and had small stages and frustrating controls. I would probably really enjoy a MPH sequel.

I should have been more clear in my initial post. I agree that things would have to be changed, such as the controls. I do not think they should have paid less attention to the campaign if this had happened. I was never knocking the game or saying it was a bad game, it's great. I was merely commenting on what would have happened had it included a badass multiplayer as well.

@KBFloYd: that's interesting, no I have not seen it. It all sounds too good to be true, though...but here's hoping that it is. If anything needs innovation, it is definitely FPS.

Or maybe its single-player mode would not have received the same attention it originally did, leading to an adventure that would be less inspired and polished so that a shooting multiplayer mode could be tacked on.

@Pierst179: maybe, but as I stated earlier before, with the right company behind a game that doesn't always happen. Guess it's a good thing it's all speculation and we will never really know :D

you would need to change the controls and doing that would limit the design and tactics of enemies and bosses in the campaign. the campaign was designed with the lock on system in mind.

that system wasnt just put in place for the fun of it.

Take the Single player from Metroid Prime and the Multiplayer from Prime Hunters and upgrade those and you got your wish. Hunters online was pretty fun actually.

They had quite a lot of levels, the characters needed to be more balanced but for the most part Trace was the only truly OP character. The controls were fine for a DS game. It basically was like playing Unreal Tournament on Dreamcast or Quake 3, same button setup so while the controls could have been better, I agree, they worked fine.

Yeah the Single Player was short but did you see how that game looked on DS? That game looked phenomenal and then it had an online multiplayer so of course the DS couldn't handle a lengthier Single player (which is a shame but what could you do about it really?).

Metroid on the WiiU should include online multiplayer in the same vein as Hunters but upgraded and more balanced. That would be great.

If that would have happened the Single Player would have probably suffered and I don't think anyone cares. More people perfer single player to online multiplayer anyway and a 96% average says otherwise.

I think launching the Cube in 2000 against the PS2 would have been better for it, would've hurt the Xbox as Cube would've been established. Of course, what games would have come out I have no idea. Also, cancelling Retro's RPG and Car combat game were mistakes too. Could've made some great new IPs there.

The handle though and the purple launch color too. If anything I'd have launched the Cube for $250 in 2001 with a DVD player so third party devs didn't have as much trouble porting stuff.
