So an interview with Reggie on Spike just revealed that the only games on display today were "launch window" games. Now hear me out.
The Wii U is launching perfectly.
There I said it. Now the ones who are going to flame me probably aren't reading anymore. But hear me out. So it seems like the third party developers go through a two year cycle where every other year we get groundbreaking games that leave our jaws at the floor and then the next we get merely great games that don't do much to push the boundaries.
Now with the Wii architecture constatnly changing to meet the developer's wants and needs, it would be rather difficult to get some of the higher end games of this year ready for the Wii U launch. But that's okay. Because we're in the great year, and next year is the year to really 'WOW" us.
Last year, we got Arkham City, Portal 2, Skyrim.
This year we're getting Resident Evil, Assassin's Creed, and COD 2012 (they might as well just drop the names by now).
But now that the Wii U hardware is finalized, developers can start moving their 2013 releases to the Wii U; something they couldn't do with a lot of this year's releases. If Nintendo keeps schmoozing with third parties, we're going to be missing stuff like Resident Evil (this one is truly a bummer), Black Ops 2, and whatever else is coming out this fall.
But next year, GTA 5 comes out; along with plenty of other unnanounced games. Now, it's been heavily rumored that GTA 5 is coming to the Wii U and why shouldn't it? No matter how poorly it takes off, the Wii U's going to move some units. And honestly, we have probably the best third party game coming out this year at launch (Assassin's Creed 3). But next year, we're going to be getting a hell of a lot more. Ken Levine the head of 2K-whatever has already praised the Wii U, and I think with Bioshock's delay, there's a good chance it's getting a Wii U version.
This of course is now up to Nintendo to make this happen, but honestly, the Wii has arguably four or five quality launch titles (six if ZombiU is actually good, but I'm not getting my hopes up). And drag that into next year, if Nintendo plays their cards right, we're going to have a hell of a next-gen system.
I think they're right where they want to be.
