I have never played a Final Fantasy game, but FF4 for the DS looks like it could be good. I usually don't play RPGs, but I have played Dragon Quest 8 and most of the Mario RPGs and liked them. Do you think this game is right for me? Also is it worth $40?

Thanks!

One thing to remember about old-school Final Fantasy games is that there's little action at all on your part. Walk around, run into a monster, fight it in turn-based not-very-exciting style, then move on to the next. If you like action games or games where you control the blade, this definately wouldn't be the game for you.

If you like commanding units and watching battles play out though, FF4 is a great game. FF pretty much set the standards for turn-based RPGs.

edit: I personally wouldn't pay $40.. but that's because I don't like the classic FFs. If you're worried about it, try FF3 first, since it should be cheaper and has the same gameplay style.

I wouldn't try FF3 first, it may turn you off of Final Fantasy, there is way more grinding and less save points than FF4. Well if you liked the Mario RPGs then I suggest you get this game. I loved it.

Get Final Fantasy 4 if you feel like playing a RPG, and the story is great. Oh and Slorigie, you sort of make the game seem more boring then what it really is but i guess it can get a bit repititive if your not into RPGs. I would recommend getting this game, if you don't like it bring it back to the store and get your money back.

Oh, seriously? Didn't know that about FF3 vs FF4. I only had FF3 so I wasn't sure, sorry!

And yeah, I found it really boring to be honest. I actually found all old-school FFs to be boring.. uninteresting plot mixed with uninteresting combat style. I guess it's all personal preference though (there's only been one turn-based RPG that I've loved enough to beat, which is on PSP). So yeah, I know that FFIV isn't a bad game, I guess I just make it sound like I feel it is.

I understand how you think the battles are uninteresting but I love the plots, you have not played FF4? You should try if you haven't. Yeah theres lots of RPGs I don't beat but not because of the story, probably just the repetitiveness of the game but I beat Final Fantasy 4 and its easier than FF3. There is basically no grinding in FF4

I just got FFIV, having never played a FF game before (I mean, aside from MLaaK, which doesn't entirely count in this context since it isn't true RPG.) I'm not that far in, but the plot is pretty cool and melodramatic. The random encounters can get annoying. I was never a big fan of those, but you can alter the battle speed so they go by faster as well as put it in auto. That'll quickly get you through the random encounters and you can quickly take it off auto for the tougher battles. Also, the graphics are very nice - a vast improvement over the original. It seems like it's quite a long game, so it seems worth the $40 to me, which is why I bought it.

The FF series is pretty important and influential. It would be a shame not to at least try it out and see if you enjoy it. FFIV isprobably the best one to start with on DS, from what I've heard.

In FF4 though, the turn-based style is slightly different. It's active, which means while you're giving commands to your party, the enemy can still attack you. I don't find it boring at all and I don't think you can give a personal opinion without even trying the game. :x

Of the first 6 Final Fantasy games, 4 has always been my favorite, thanks in part to its strong cast of characters and 'classic' story. Cecil and Kain just make for two great characters, and everyone they meet along the way is pretty memorable, and you aren't ever fully sure of who Baron will attack next or who is pulling the strings. Anyone who denies this is a fool, plain and simple.

The gameplay is pretty much the same as the one from 6. Your characters learn their attacks as they grow stronger, so you don't have to buy and equip them as you did in 1-3, but at the same time all characters have preset magic spells that they learn over the course of the game. Characters join and leave your party often, but Cecil will be there the entire game. Battles are pretty basic, but feature all of the regular commands you would expect from an RPG - Fight, Item, Run - and one or two special commands that are unique to that character or a couple of characters. There are alternate routes you can take, and items that are hidden around towns or else partially obscured by surroundings. Battles are randomized, so every couple of steps you will run into an enemy, so it can get repetitive from time to time. Boss battles is where 4 really shines, I think - there is usually some weakness that the boss has, and you need to figure that out while keeping everyone alive.

How this DS remake turned out I don't know, but it looks good from pictures, though. I think they made Cecil look a little feminine in his paladin form this time around...but I dunno, maybe there's some masculinity there yet.

Amazing game, one of best RPG's I've ever played. FFIII turned me off a bit, FFIV delivered in style. Absolutely recommended. :)

Final Fantasy IV has a strong plot and storyline. It was my first entry into the Final Fantasy series on the Super Nintendo. Obviously RPG's have evolved since then but never forget your roots.

Please quote where in my posts I said that FF4 was purely linear turn-based, or where I said that it was a bad game in terms of turn-based RPGs, or where I said I hadn't tried it. If you can't, then please don't take that attitude with me. I was speaking from the PoV of someone who likes ACTION RPGs (FF4 may be different, but it's still turn-based). Just because I don't own it or haven't beaten it, doesn't mean I can't have an opinion about it and share it with others. I'll admit that I haven't put much time into the game, but my points are all still valid, and the only thing I said that was wrong was that FF3 and FF4 aren't as comparable as I thought.

I'll admit that I haven't beaten it or put as much time into it as I should to appreciate the end of the plot (I just found it stale from the beginning), but I have still played it. Then I put it down and picked up an action RPG and haven't turned back.

Meh. There are so many better RPGs out there. I didn't really enjoy it. But to be fair, I've been spoiled by quality open-ended RPGs that are free of grindiness and linearity. So you might be able to enjoy it.

I would say it depends on how much you like traditional turn-based JRPG's. I really like Bioware and Mario RPG's, but I couldn't even finish FFVI for the GBA because the combat gets so boring. If you can put up with boring game mechanics for an awesome story (I really can't), I would give it a try.

I have to admit I thought the opinion on FF IV was a little strong. The middle and end are where the FF IV plot gets interesting and everyone's individual story starts to come to a conclusion. It's unfortunate it didn't keep your interest. I did lose interest in Final Fantasy III, I think I enjoyed Ring of Fates more than I did FF III.

Well, you said you only had FF3, which makes me think you don't own FF4, and therefore haven't tried it. But, whatever, I guess you could've tried it somewhere else or something. As well, you say to quote the post where you said it was a bad game, and I agree that you never said that, but I never implied that you said it either. :| If that makes sense.

Seriously, I'm not trying to pick a fight here. I may have been slightly ticked when I typed my previous post but I didn't really mean to come off as having an 'attitude'. Sorry.

I am not a fan of Role Playing Games in the least bit. I usually enjoying playing FPS, and Action games. But FF IV is by far my favorite role playing game. Plus I have never gotten board of the game while playing it. I play it several hours a day, at once. I probably play eight hours a day on that game alone. The story line is legendary, the graphics, and game play is fun. The characters are easy to relate to, and like and dislike. I would highly suggest that you buy this game. Even more so considering that you liked the Mario RPG's.

If you enjoyed DQ VIII then you could enjoy FFIV, it has the same old school gameplay like DQ VIII did.
