I'm thinking of giving a teenager a 3DS as a gift. Do you think thats a good idea in this day and age with cheap (or even free) games on iPads and iPhones and all that? It seems to me the 3DS serves a niche market for people who enjoy JRPGs, hard puzzle games, old school Nintendo charachters like Mario and for the average person its not as good an idea as say the Gameboy was back in the day.

This guy makes it look like the 3DS would just lie around:

Should I Get a Nintendo 3DS?

I know folk over here are probably 3DS fans but try to put yourselves in the shoes of a teenager. What do you think?

I'd take it...but seriously, coming from someone who does a lot of mobile and tablet gaming, the experience and the games there cannot compare to the experience and quality of games on the 3DS.

It is only a bad idea if the person does not want a 3DS ;) On a more serious note, if he/she likes to game a lot, than he/she might prefer a 3DS as it offers a lot of longer lasting games that can also be played in short spurts (even SRPGs like Fire Emblem, where you can save in the middle of a skirmish). It also offers far more versatile control options, making it more suitable for certain genres ( 3D racing games, platformers that require precision, etc.). The games are also more expensive, granted, but often have more content to offer (perhaps you could use the money saved from getting a 3DS instead of an iPad/phone to buy her a giftcard for a store that sells games :p) If the teenager wants something more on the multimedia end of things, however, and cares more for cheaper on the go games, than a smartphone/tablet would be a better idea.

iCrap is really overrated, a few good games does not make a library.

That guy's a cartoon. I've spent about 12 bucks on my favorite android game(Stair Dismount). Total time played? Maybe 10 hours. Even with new maps every month or two, pushing a dude off of stuff just gets old. 40 bucks on the other hand has got me a game I've poured over two hundred hours into, and there are at least 3 other games I own for my 3DS that I've got a hundred+ hours into. All of these handheld doomsayers have one thing in common- they all want Nintendo to go belly up in the hopes of having Mario hit the app store of their telephone of choice. Doesn't that tell you something? And an interesting side note: at the end of October(almost exactly the 2 year mark of this guy's doom and gloom prediction), Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate leaunches on the 3ds. The single highest-profile third party franchise to hit the system. Yeah, 3ds is well and truly doomed. *cue eyeroll*

I have gifted two of them and both of the people I have given them to have LOVED them. The first one I gave was to my younger brother. He used to play a lot of video games like me but then he found other hobbies. He would still tell my about games that he was playing on his iPhone though. I told him he should get back into gaming but he was not motivated enough to do it in his own so when Fire Emblem was released with its limited edition 3DS I bought it for him and he was thrilled. The second one I gave to my cousin who is twenty years old and she absolutely adores it too. The 3DS itself is just a sleek piece of hardware. It is difficult for me to believe that someone would not be able to appreciate some aspect of it on some level.

Just ask him what he thinks of Nintendo and JRPG games. If his answer is anything but negative, get him a 3DS.

So I'm not the only one that senses a conspiracy against Nintendo online... But yes, a 3DS is an excellent gift. That or the PSVita, it might be better to ask around first.

i play my consoles/3dsxl ANY TIME i can over my phone... App's on phones are mostly garbage that last 10 minutes then you come around cool games ONCe in the blue moon that in turn try get you drop tons of micro transactions

has much as i like to say yes, it truly depends on the person.  Remind you most games on 3ds is rpgs/side scrollers so if person isn't to fond of those game styles then it wouldn't be that much of a good buy

Putting myself in the shoes of a "teenager" is far too vague. Some people will like it, some will not.

Does the 3DS have many blockbuster games that are not RPGs, side scrollers, platformers and/or puzzles? Cos those arent the type of games this teenager will like.

Well what types of games does he like? Honestly I think you're on the wrong path with BOTH the 3DS and the iPhone/iPad (assuming you're looking JUST at the gaming side), as both are mainly made up of those sorts of titles.

3DS has a vastly superior llbrary than iPad/Android and you have no guarantee that in a year this teenager will be able to play the latest Android/iOS games on their tablet. With a 3DS or dedicated handheld they will be able to play the latest 3DS games in 5-7 years.

BTW, traditional handheld gaming isn't exactly a "niche" market, since 3DS manages to sell 15 million units per year and looks to explode even more so with MH4, Pokemon, Zelda, Smash Bros, etc. If the 3DS gets no boost from those games and continues to sell 15 million per year for as many years as the DS was out ( 7 years) then the 3DS will sell 105 million units lifetime.

I don't think 80-100 million units lifetime for a portable device like this is "niche" in anyway. That's like saying cheap, free flash and facebook games make the PC market "niche".

Well if he/she isn't interested in those great genres than I don't think they enjoy games at all. Unless they just like sports and shooters, in that case if they aren't 17 you shouldn't be buying them a console with violent games and shooters and sports games suck on iOS/Android even more so.

Woah. Just got your message. The first game I mentioned was Samurai Warriors Chronicles- it was a launch game, but it had more content than(I'm pretty sure) any other launch title, and still outshines a large portion of the system's library- dozens of characters, something like 50 campaign missions, fusing weapons and items to upgrade your weapons- it was just amazing how much stuff that game has going for it. And that isn't even mentioning the gameplay itself, which has you tearing through enemy armies like Sauron of the Second Age from the beginning of the LotR movies. Other games I've had that topped 100 hours include Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate(CPP is almost a necessity), Fire Emblem: Awakening and Heroes of Ruin.

C'mon, Bonesaw! Action gamers are gamers, too. At the moment, I don't think you could call any action titles in the 3DS's library a "blockbuster" per se, but Batman: Arkham is coming out at the end of October, and that's about as blockbuster-y as it gets. For now, prime action games include Captain America: Super Soldier, Amazing Spiderman, THOR: God of Thunder(yes, I like my comicbook movie games), Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy and the games I mentioned in my above comment(except Fire Emblem, which is a tactical RPG).
