Ok, is it just me who thinks that new Mario Kart, Mario Kart Wii, seems off from other Mario Kart games. I have been playing the game for the last few days and have noticed some issues with the game that differ from earlier installments of the game franchise.

One of the biggest issues I have with the game is that there are WAY too many power-up items. I swear to god, the amount of blue shells the computer gets is ridiculous, and not to mention, every item that you get hit with makes you lose your items...blah. With the amount of blue shells and pows in the game, it is almost impossible to maintain the 1st position throughout a race, making it very easy to go from first to twelfth.

In all reality, Nintendo turned this game from a weapons based racer into an all out brawl taking place on a race circuit. I think that this game did all of good to the franchise, but there are many aspects of the game that is down right frustrating.

What do you think?

Sorry, it's you. The game is just fun. Like yeah, I notice the computers get the spiny shells, and pow blocks everytime your in 1st place. But 150cc is a killer.

I actually think the game is incredible.

It's significantly better looking then double dash, in fact some areas are quite good looking by any standard - though it's obviously not nearly as big of an improvement as alot of 360/ps3 games are to their previous gen counterparts. It's certainly not worse, or just as good looking as DD as alot of people had been expecting/claiming.

The wii controls are very underrated. The wheel adds to the fun, and is more comfortable then the control on its side. It has a learning curve for sure, but it's way more fun and changes the game up alot making MKWii a very worthy addition in the MK franchise, rather then just a simple upgrade. On top of that, we have the return of the rear view(which is great), the addition of half pipes - i don't recall if this was in other games, but if it was, it didn't play the same as it does in MKWii; there's also the addition of bikes which are excellent.

It's not a perfect game( but how many times do we really need to say that? what game is?), and you're certainly right that we get pounded hard in the grand prix which can be frustrating for sure, but MK has always been like that. Personally, i haven't found it worse then DD was in terms of cheap AI.

The game is great its just that 150cc can sometimes be INCREDIBLY frustrating. ( Looking at you Bullet Bill and Blue shell!)

Though the items can get annoying, I still find this to be the funnest Mario Kart I've ever played.

Items are incredibly cheap and annoying. It's even worse this time around. There should seriously be an item switch in the next game. Or at least add some sort of skill to using the items. It's all so luck-based.

POW Block: Wiggle the Wii Remote during the 3rd little quake. You'll lose any items you have, and instead of 3 spinouts, you only spin out once and still maintain your speed.

Make sure to use the "Rear View" button a lot. It comes in handy when you hear that warning that someone is coming up behind you with a Star, Mushroom, or Bullet Bill. All you have to do is move out of the way, and wait for them to either make a mistake, get hit with a blue shell, hit them yourself, or draft behind them to get that speed boost.

If you grab a star early in the level, try to hold onto it if you can and work your way back into first place without using it. You can then use it whenever you hear the blue shell coming (or any item, for that matter).

Uh what else? Oh, always hold an item behind your back, with another one in stock just in case. It'll stop any red or green shell if you line yourself up properly (Again, check your rear view to line it up), and can double as a weapon if anybody gets too close.

So there are a number of ways to avoid getting hit. It's not all "luck-based" as you put it. There is a lot of luck involved in the game, but most of it can be countered anyway so skill usually prevails. You just need to think ahead when you get your items. Like, say to yourself "How can I use this later on?"

Basically, be Macgyver.

Be careful about complaining about Nintendo or a Nintendo game in the Wii forums, there are a lot of loyalist here who wil chew your head off and make you feel stupid despite you bringing valid and constructive criticism in. You might even get a MOD warning.

i think, perhaps, ninty forgot to factor in that theres 12 carts instead of 8 on the track..so there are more weapons being thrown around and its overly harsh for the race leader. i know mario kart is not a completly skill based game (theres some strategy...and luck involved) but sometimes it is taking the piss. especially on the blu-shell front (which should be removed completly...or from the single player cups at least).

a quick tip TC......hang around 8-9 th place on the higher cups to get more powerful weapons (and avoid blu-shell wrath)...then around half way through the last lap....go nuts.

Just a question: a you new or fairly new to the Mario Kart series? People who have followed the Mario Kart games know what to expect and I can say that this is the best Mario Kart console game so far. BUT that doesn't mean I love it. I do agree with your peeves about this game.

It seems like it's more about luck and less about skills. I kind of see Mario Kart somewhere between Mario Party and Super Smash. Super Smash takes skills; whereas chance and luck play a huuugge factor in who wins. Mario Kart is a little bit of both. You need skills but at the same time luck can bite you in the ass and you can go from 1st to last in mere seconds.

I think Nintendo is too soft on young gamers so they try to make the game as fair as possible to all ages by including ridiculous items that can help even the worst gamer win first. This pisses me off because I KNOW I can beat any CC's if it wasn't for all the damn items. I wish there was a way to turn items off. Then I'd love the crap out of this game.

lol twelfth... it's spelt so funny in words

anyway yeah it is easy to go from 1st to 12th, but it's also easy to go back up to first. There is definitely more positions changes, but as for being "off" I wouldn't call it that

The blue shell just needs to be trashed all together. It takes no skill to use and in almost all cases it doesn't even benefit the person who used the weapon in the first place!

Either that or make like it was in the N64 version were the blue shell went around the track hitting anyone in its path until it got to the first place driver.

A lot of the arguments against the game in the reviews pretty much reflect what you're saying; so no you aren't the only one. I'd still say it's a very fun game though, albeit frustrating at times. In fact, I've been playing Mario Kart Wii about just as much as GTA IV :)
