is it okay for like charging your ds for a while then stop, then like after ten mins u charge it again and after like 2 and a half hours u stop it because it is so late for u to wait it to be fully charged. so i continued charging it the next day until it is fully charged.

is that ok? or will it affect my battery even it is still not charged 500 times?

only charge it when the light is red, or play until it dies out completely. it will def help out the life of the battery. all batteries work that way

Well I usually dont fully charge mine when it turns red, I just plug it in while im playing then unplug in when im done, eventually ill just charge it up fully. I dont think its caused any damage or wear on it but its probably better to charge it fully.

Depleting the charge fully before you recharge means that all of the battery gets reactivated when you recharge, which extends the life of the battery.  Charging it halfway through results in some of the material not keeping charge, thus ruining battery life.

Not to say that it's not ok, but don't do it very often.

You should NOT discharge lithium-ion batteries completely before recharging.

Like someone already mentioned... Using the battery completely before charging it again will NOT prolong it's life. This is often mistaken by many people. Just because you charge the DS less often, does not mean it will last longer. Check the link posted by the above user.

Modern battery technology has resolved the memory leak issue present in many rechargeable NimH and Lithium Ion batteries.  The DS Lite features the newer technology that does not require you to fully discharge the battery before having to recharge it to full.  In fact, it is better for the battery not to reach the "red light" zone, even though these kinds of concerns are somewhat unnecessary.

As for me, I usually play my DSLite plugged up to the AC adapter, and leave it plugged all the time.  Only when I go around the house or head outside do I unplug it

Lithium Ion batteries do NOT have the memory effect, so its okay to charge it anytime. I think it is mainly lead-acid and nickel-cadmium batteries hat thave memory effect.

Memory effect = if you only charge a battery at 50% power left,  it will soon begin to think that 50% is 0%, meaning as soon as your battery level reaches 50%, the battery runs out. Something like that, but I am not a battery expert. :P

bcuz i'm kind of a jinx at electric plugs. like I caused 6 black-outs at our house just because of plugging the vacuum. and I have a bit of like "phobia" about charging things. And I kinda worry too much. And I don't drink coffee or soda nor tea. for the record

Don't ever leave your DS charging overnight. That's one way to make the battery weak.

Its what I experienced with my cell phone. And I learned of it. :)

Another thing is its stated in the manual that the battery lasts until 500 charging times. So if you always charge it, it means you're getting to the dead zone so fast. I suggest that charge it fully and charge it again when it almost reaches empty.

Supernova is right, although I'd say a bit exaggerated in the memory effect example.

Apart from NiMH/Lithium Ion batteries, basically if you don't recharge when the battery is dead or near dead, and instead recharging when there is still a good amount of charge left in the battery then you are effectively lowering how much charge that battery can hold. Eg. If a new battery lasts for 10hrs and for the next few months you continually charge the battery when it hasn't been all used up then you might find the battery when fully charged after those few months will last only 8hrs, and after a few more months only 7hrs, and so on.

The DS battery is Lithium Ion, so your okay charging whenever, although everytime you do charge you're using up one of the 500 "lives" of the DS battery so it would be best to charge when the battery light shows red if you want it to last longer.

So, charging your DS time to time will make it closer to its cemetery.

For short, its not okay to charge it time to time.

mythbusters proved that goldfish have a memory of more than 3 seconds. in fact they memorized where their food was at and how to get to it through an obstacle course in a matter of days. i just use the battery until it goes red then recharge it for 3 hours

For older batteries, you need to run down the battery as much as possible before recharging it fully. But for the newer batteries charge it whenever you want. Convenient, huh?
