Is it really even worth getting a Wii U yet?

It doesn't sound like it'll have a halfway decent library till late next year.

I think so for the new built in features. But then not really as far as must own different games. Most games are just ports minus zombieU and Mario. I don't regret mine at all. It's my new main gaming console.

Such as?

As of now the only games I want are Transformed, Zombiu, and Mario. And really, I would be fine with just renting two of those, and I could just get Transformed on the 360.

Seriously Miiverse is amazing. I don't know why. I constantly keep going back to it to see whats new. It was a really cool idea. TC, for the game library you kind of have a point. If you really feel that way about the games then maybe you're better off waiting a bit. I'm thoroughly enjoying NSMBU and Nintendoland. I just recently got ZombiU and my brother got BlOps 2 so I have more to play. I'm more than satisfied with it.

It's worth it. I've been critical of Nintendos use of NSMB, but it came in the mail today and I'd score it no less than a 9.5--I'd maybe even give it a 10. I was one of those people that would continuously say, "Nintendo should go back and do high res sprites". And part of me thinks they will, however, the visuals in NSMBU are BRILLIANT. I don't think I've ever seen a fixed view game with as much depth and mature use of color. The game is incredibly tight, as well--the entire package is very slick. Then you've got ZombieU. Read the Eurogamer and Giantbomb reviews, because the one on this site doesn't add up to a critical take on the game. To put it short, this game has the best horror atmosphere since Resident Evil 2. It's also a better game than Black Ops. Lastly, Nintendo Land is rather brilliant is as well. I can't wait till more people get the console and become familiar with the new gameplay designs Nintendo is going for. This console is a return to the "hardcore" form of gaming. I don't like that word, but it came from the NES era, and this system, so far, is feeling like that one.

Not really interested in that since it sounds like a worse version of something I already do on my computer.

Well...

  • Miiverse is pretty awesome. Its like a huge round up of a twitter like forum that is dedicated to every single game and application. And there are so many creative and amusing people on there. Its where from what i've seen is a good source to get feed back from gamers who have actually played the game that they are talking about (Miiverse tells you if they have actually played it). You can even take in game screen shots of whatever game your playing and post them on Miiverse, you can also like (on Miiverse its called "yeah") and reply to things that people post. Its also moderated so its pretty safe for kids and from what I've seen, I havent seen anything like penises or boobs so you arent going to see much if any of that. You can also search and add people through Miiverse. Its pretty awesome really and according to the Iwata ask on it, its pretty easy to update and improve since it is mostly server and not client.
  • The Internet Browser, its fast, its way faster than the Wii's, DSi's, 3DS's web browser and from what i hear its faster than the PS3's and 360's. It has no trouble loading detailed images that are larger than your tv (without any zoom), no trouble loading nice detailed gifs with alot of frames. Youtube also works perfectly, which makes me question why there is going to be a youtube app. My favorite feature of the broswer so far is being able to load up a youtube video, keep the video playing on your tv screen and continue browsing the web on the controller without slowing down the video. I also really like it how this broswer has tabs.
  • Netflix, if you live in America of course. I dont really need to say much about this, but from what I've used of it so far it works better than the Wii verson and loads pretty quickly. I like its interface better than the PC verson too. And its pretty awesome being able to watch the movies on the controller if you want to, the best part about that is despite the screen not being hd, the movies dont look downgraded when being displayed on the controller's screen.
  • Besides Netflix, there is Hulu Plus (which was just released today) which I have never used since Im not subbed to Hulu, Amazon Video (soon to be available), and a Youtube app (also coming soon).
  • This currently isnt available, but Nintendo TVii will controll all the video/ movie watching apps I listed above (not sure about youtube though) and from the demos and people who tried it, it seems like this is going to be very useful and that it works well.
  • I'd argue that the TV remote function of controller is enough to make the system worth it, seeing how not only can it turn the tv on and off as well as controll the volume, but it can also controll your cable box if you have paid television.
  • The eshop is shaping up very well, almost all of the retail games are available for download off of it, and if what the Trine 2 devs said is anything to go by, we can expect download any games to be considerably cheaper than retail games, and you can expect alot of indie games on the eshop too.

As for games, I havent had a chance to try out the games really since my brother has been hogging it ever since launch.

If you don't feel there are enough games out or coming soon that take your interest then I'd say it isn't worth it. Personally I'm happy with MarioU and ZombiU with Sonic Racing and Nintendoland to have some fun with friends over for now. I'll also be getting Rayman, Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2 when they release plus there is some good DL only games to pick up. I really don't think system features alone are enough of a reason to pick one up, it's all about the games.

I have been a big nintendo fan for years because of the playability of their games but there was one thing I read today that really annoyed me.

Reggie was having this big talk about how profitable the Wii u will be. he mentionned that once anyone buy a game with the system the profit will start rolling in etc..

I mean, back in the days I cannot recall nintendo talking profit on their system just a few days after a system was released. instead the word around would be the big wow factor of their latest games. And now since the Wii was out it feels like we are getting consoles that are just the cheapest deal they could get in order for them to make money from day one. I mean how greedy is that!!?

so yes of course they have thrown a little new technologie in the Wiiu as a minimum so that you don't feel totally ripped of, but in fact the wiiu is just a another cheap piece of underpowered hardware wth a few technologie twist and a lot bugs and problems to be adressed.

So if you ask me Is Wii u the right choice for nintendo? well surely since their goal is making lots of money on people back that are buying their promesses and they succeed.

Personnaly I am dissapointed with the Wii u (and I think the Wii name had to go) why? because its just more of the same. the same concept and gimmick idea that was behind the Wii. So yes its all about exploring new horizon and new ways of playing but the problem is that none of these new ways of playing are ever properly explored and you just end up waiting fo the big hit game that will use the fantastic new way of playing, but It never arrives! and the only thing you do after buying the system is hope that something will come along. (it never did in 5 years of Wii)

So, I kind of have enough of their blue ocean philosophy the big reggie and iwata speeches, the non gamers crowd, the freaking Miis (that are the worst thing ever created) and all the rest. thats not the Nintendo I used to know.

The industry is different now. When something is more profitable, there's more pieces of the pie to go around. Nintendo still does games by trade--without it they would not exist. Theyve got to do things to please investors. That's just reality of things when the amount of money involved in something, increases.

I think you have them pegged wrong. All companies are about making a profit so they can........ you know..... pay their employees, their overhead and then to keep making their products. Sounds like you had some really naive views on Nintendo when the big N is a company like any other and has to operate to make profits. Them making profits is a good thing. Leads to more R&D, more games, etc etc.

Personally, I think it's worth it right now. There are solid games for it such as Mario, Nintendo Land, and Scribblenauts. The 3rd party ports like AC3, ME3, Darksiders 2, and Batman are great games, but in most cases people will have played them already on another system.

It's definitely worth it if you've never played those 3rd party games before, but still worth a purchase even for the Mii Verse and handful of solid launch titles out now.

... I remember that interview, and that response was to a question directly asking "This will be the first Nintendo game machine that the company's going to be selling at a loss at launch. How does that change the business model for Nintendo?" Do you want him to NOT talk about profitability to such a question? Get things in context first.

As to the rest of your post, first off, all businesses need profit to stay alive. They were profit-driven during the NES/SNES/N64/GCN/Wii days, they're profit-driven now. Saying the Wii U's concept is the same as the Wii's is ludicrous to me, and I would imagine a similar reaction from others. Sure, you could generalize the two concepts until they sound the same, but you could do that with every system. Now, PS Move, that's the same concept as the Wii. Kinect is not the same concept as the Wii. Note that I own all three, so I'm not trying to pick on a console.

If you think the Wii never had a great game that used the Wiimote well, I sincerely question your taste in gaming. I feel Skyward Sword alone invalidates your argument, but so do others that came before it. But if you didn't like any Wii game that came out ever, then maybe you're just not that into Nintendo anymore.

To answer the TC's query: the console feels very impressive when you first start playing it. It is still impressing me. Don't underestimate Nintendo Land either. You may think "Oh I don't want some crappy mini-game blahblah" trust me and most people on this forum, it's surprisingly good with a lot of content to explore. Just make sure you have some extra Wiimotes and friends. As for whether it's worth it? Well one, I think you should count Nintendo Land as a must-play, just for the experience. It really makes the GamePad "come to life", so to speak. Within the next four months we're getting Wonderful 101 (supposedly), Pikmin 3, and Rayman Legends. All three are almost certain to be fantastic. If those don't interest you, then I'd say you probably wouldn't like a Wii U right now.

So you just want nintendo to have stayed the same, a generic console with nothing unique? Just a controller and a console that only plays games? Why do you think the other companies are ripping off nintendo lol I could care less how the "gimmick" idea is, but the wii u gamepad has a lot of potential and that's why other companies like MS are trying to copy it with smartglass. Mii's aren't that bad and the wii had awesome games that showed new ways of playing, the zelda games and metroid prime 3 come to mind

My honest opinion is no. It could potentially become a great system in the future, but for now its library consists of ports and a few exclusives that aren't that interesting. If I get one, it will be a considerable amount of time from now. The price will go down and the selection will go up.

I don't think it's ever worth it to get any console or gaming device at launch, for the very obvious reason that it won't have much of a library. But that's just me.

Honestly, the Wii U is the most fun I've had with a console at launch in a long time, sure there were a few hurdles to jump over to get there, but Nintendo has me hooked, I can't wait to play some of the other games that are coming out and I'm looking forward to the future :)

I know nintendo is a business and by definition a business is there to make money . what I mean is that the money talk nowadays is always something that always comes up on blogs and articles rather the talking about the games themselves. back in the days when the latest zelda or mario cart was coming out, the first you would hear about would be what is the best power up or shortcut to take or how to gain access to secret levels etc.. now as an example (not nintendo) I just read and article on eurogamer this morning saying new call of duty is out! and it just made 500 million dollars on launch. I could not care less about how much money it made. I mean talk to me about the game whats new whats good whats bad... i guess its just where the game industry is at the moment.
