I have both games and i can say that while both are easily more fun by going online the games are both rock solid without. Playing online with mariokart is great, but there are people who will disconnect if they aren't going to win to preserve there records. Also, animal crossing is much more fun online if you know someone else who owns the game. Mariokart has one of the highest replay values of any ds game i own because i mostly play using the wireless multiplayer with my 3 roomates. Besides, you can always go to a local McDonalds and use there free wifi if you feel left out. If you have any more questions just post em here, im more than willing to answer them for you!
Mario Kart is pretty fun offline. You don't have to deal with snakers or people who disconnect when they're losing. The AI is pretty good and will give you a decent enough challenge. You should play ACWW online a few times if you can. The reason is because if you want to collect all the fruit in the game, you'll have to trade with other players.
I hardly go online with my AC:WW and I still enjoy it. MKDS is very fun offline with great replay value, but the online experience is definitely great. It can also be frustrating with the amount of disconnectors present online. But it's still a solid game without the online experience. :)
