Both are adventure games, you explore dungeons, solve puzzles, stuff like that. But the feel and atmosphere of the game is very different.

Zelda games are always like this:

Overworld > Temple > Puzzles > Boss > new weapon/item > new area > new temple

Metroid games are something like this:

Overworld > Region/planet > puzzles > Boss > new weapon/item > new area (same region) > more puzzles > boss > new item/ weapon> new area (same region) > more puzzles > boss > new item/ weapon > Finally a new region/planet

Well, Metroid Prime is different because it doesn't tell you anything, you're on your own pretty much. Zelda is a lot more straight forward.

Metroid is a futuristic alien environment with a big world to explore and lots to find like zelda. That being said, thats about where the comparisons stop. Metroid Prime is FPS but all the other ones are sidescroller, or a mix of everthying in the new one (Other M). I can't really explain it, but they are very different. Metroid is more focused on action then puzzles. Oh and zelda is very world like, where there are a lot of NPC's and such, but metroid is pretty much you (Samus Aran) in a foreign eerie world.

Yes and more, you can jump in metroid, you can aim while walking, the weapons and abilities are very very different, metroid has bigger areas too

No. I'll have you know that I think Metroid Prime is highly overrated. I hate how there is so much backtracking, and the save points can be really annoying. It's still a good game, but I prefer games like Super Metroid.

This is probably the biggest difference, which makes them feel worlds apart. Also Metroid doesn't have an overworld, with separated locations for missions, everything happens in one seamless world(or worlds in some cases). If you ever played Castlevania for the GB, that is probably the easier comparison to Metroid.

LOL I wasn't aware anything I said made it sound better :P. Personally I am a bigger Zelda fan, as it is possibly my favorite series of all time, but Metroid is close behind and an amazing series as well. That being said I am not usually to big on alien settings, and I love fantasy medieval settings. But metroid is one of the exceptions where I love the eerie space setting and all. It is simply a matter of opinion. Pick up Metroid Prime Trilogy if you are starting with 3D, but if you want a 2D one, try Super Metroid. Super Metroid is my favorite, but Prime 1 is close behind.

Those games have their faults too, backtracking, overly complicated puzzles (MP2), the music is not as good, and sometimes they feel slow (areas bigger than they should)

Yeah the 2D castlevanias are much like the 2D metroids. And the feeling of 2D metroid carr over to the 3D ones very well, so they feel similar, despite the big difference in action due to FPS view.

I dont view backtracking and complicated puzzles as a bad thing. I loved Prime 2 because it was probably the most difficult 3D one. Also Metroid music is AMAZING!

Yeah the Prime trilogy had an amazing soundtrack as did Super Metroid. The first one was good, but as with most NES games it got much better in later games.

Haha NES had some good games, but games like Metroid suffer severely from the lack of unique areas. Everything looked the same :P.

I can see what you mean, but Zelda you go to Dungeon to Dungeon collecting items and hearts and what not but Metroid you releativly stay in the same area just go into different sections of the planet (except for Corruption which goes to planet to planet.)

now I can sort of see with these two game to how they are similar but honestly they are not.

Zelda 2

Metroid

Some Similarities but there are huge differences too.

Naw, not at all really. If you break it down there seems to some simularities. But never will you think that you playing Zelda with a sci-fi skin when playing Metroid.

Zelda has a few separate dungeons/temples which you complete on by one, whereas Metroid is more like one MASSIVE dungeon in which different sections become accessable by gaining new powerups

Zelda has many side characters where Metroid has always been a lone adventure

if you've never played a Metroid I recommend you start with a 2d version like Super Metroid to become familiar with the style, then move on to the Prime trilogy

Though I haven't played to much Metorid besides the gamecube one, but I am a Zelda fanboy, and I can tell you, playing Zelda is a lot more fun then playing Metroid. It has more depth and better gameplay IMO.Though if you haven't tried Metorid yet, give it a try, its still a pretty fun game to play, and you can not have a full Nintendo experience without it.

Well they are both adventure games but that doesn't mean they are the same. That's like saying Mario and Sonic (platformers) are the same game or the Madden and Tiger Woods (sports) games are the same as they're in the same genre. Metroid is basically one huge area that you can keep getting new powerups that allow you to get further in further in random directions until you get to the end. Zelda is more linear and focused. Also of course the differences in shooting aliens with a beam weapons and using a sword against monsters is completely different gameplay too.

I think the closest comparison that can be made is that Metroid is a Zelda game with only one massive dungeon to explore. :P

But truth is they are completely different.

well the core gameplay element of both games is exploring the game world. however, thats also the key difference in that both have very different game worlds. zelda is known for sprawling medieval worlds while metroid tends to have tight futuristic quarters in an alien setting. unravelling the mysteries of tallon iv is a totally different experience from starting a journey through hyrule.

Yes, Metroid is just a Zelda game. Heart Containers are replaced with Energy Tanks, Arrows are replaced with Missiles, and Bombs are replaced with Power Bombs. Ganon is replaced with Mother Brain, and Volvagia is replaced with Ridley. Metroid doesn't have any Triforce, though. Oh, and Link is replaced by a hot chick, but she wears armor almost all the time so you can't see her face. In turn, Castlevania is just a Metroid game, but I won't go into that in this topic.

No, Metroid is very different. The Legend of Zelda series is very non-linear, letting you search the depths of Hyrule. On the other hand, Metroid and Metroid Prime games are very straightforward - not really allowing any open world exploration or sidequests because all the levels are jam-packed and linear. Overall, Zelda has an epic feeling of a big open land in the past, whereas Metroid features a planet or region, which does have a very atmospheric and futuristic feel. Though I still like Zelda WAAAAAAAAY more than Metroid and Mario, Metroid games are very worth looking into.
