It's been a debate for a long time. I honestly believe it's a first person shooter btw.

This will be in debate for ever. I personally beleive its a "FPS Adventure." That would be the only way to describe it. Butwhen it all boils down the majority of the gamplay requires you to shoot...in first person. So yea, its an FPS.
At one point Metroid, Super Metriod et al were released in 2D sidescrolling, and they were considered adventure games. Durring those times there were a different breed of what were called "shooters". They were 2D side-scrollers similar to Metriod games. Examples of these include Contra, Gunstar Heroes, etc.
The same can be said about Metroid's comparisons to "shooters" of today. In general, Metroid games are still adventure games. Yes they involve shooting aliens, metroids, and bosses. However, what make them adventure games are the puzzle solving, back tracking, upgrading, etc.
The thing you'll do most often, shoot, therefore, I call it a shooter, even though it's obvious it has alot more platforming and puzzle solving than any other FPS out there, it still revolves around you shooting to kill, and shooting to open doors. Whether or not it should be defined under a new genre is irrelevant because it's awesome, so keep that in mind.
I hate everyone that calls "FPA" a genre, and I also hate everyone that calls Metroid and Adventure/Action game. The game is focused and based more in shooting than in exploring, therefore, it's a FPS. Remember that and you may live in peace.Nachician
Focused more on shooting than exploring? That's the DS game.
No. I hate you. I already

No. I hate you. I had warned you. What would you do if you took out the First Person shooting? THEN and ONLY THEN it would become something like a graphic adventure. The Shooting is the core of the game, if you took out exploring then the game would be the same without visiting every place over and over. You people have a very wrong concept of FPS. Believe me
...and why can't it be both?Ospov
Thank you sir, you beat me too it :)
Honestly I think it's as black and white, plain and simple as the Prime series being a First Person Action Adventure Shooter. An...FPAAS if you will lol. It may be a mouthfull but in a world with MMORPGs I think it fits just fine. It's almost not even a metter of debate really. I mean...that's what it is! Right? All of those genres apply. And that's what makes the series so special. Why doesn't everyone just agree it falls under more than just just one genre confining category? Just enjoy it.
Says who?ZebethOrZebes
The dictionary, my intellectually challenged friend. A genre defines something, it's like saying what you are. Are you a 15YONAH???(15 year old north americanhuman). If you didn't get the retorical question, NO, you are not. You are a human.
i say it's an fps. You seeing from the 1st perosn and shooting things......Dawq902
I guess that makes Oblivion an fps, considering you can shoot things and its in first person.
[QUOTE="Nachician"]Of course it can be both, but IT CANT BE DEFINED AS BOTH. But there's not a genre called FPAAS. aransomIn 1934 there weren't any computer game genres. You can invent new ones.
Yeah you can invent them, but what games would fit in the category FPAAS? Besides, why would you invent a genre that is a hybrid from another 2?

If you interpret the term 'first person shooter' literally, then yes. This is a useless thing to argue about, because there's grey areas, and overlaps in game genres. There's a lot of games that don't quite fit into any one genre, and there's a lot of games that could fit into many genres.lets see first person
yeah it's first person
shooter
not only you shoot but u play with some kinda gun (wiimote
why the heck would it be fpa
all fps have adventure i mean because you do freaking puzzles doesn't mean it's adventure and to be honest the game is focused more in shooting than in exploring, the game is very linear i mean you have to go from place to place but it isn't really confusing nor u have to explore that much and when u see "u need to upgrade your ship to break this thing" it's the same thing than: "u have to use a bomb to break this thing" than a "fps" would say
if you see call of duty or any other fps with story mode they have adventure too so why don't change the name of the genre of all those games to fpa
adventure, escapade, risky venture, dangerous undertakinghttp://www.wordreference.com/definition/adventure

yeah but if the main weapon isn't a gun or something it isn't a fps
Samus' right arm is a gun, how could it not be a 'shooter'?!?
aransom
Because the game could focus on adventuring aspects as opposed to the shooting.
Well, to paraphrase one of the HotSpot podcast crew, it's a first-person scanner. :D
Really though, what's in a name? It is what it is, regardless of what you call it. It's entirely subjective.
It reminds me of this thought experiment I came up with a while back. Think of any object, let's say a pen.
How many atoms could you remove from that object before you would no longer recognize it as that kind of object?
There's no clear answer, which is exactly my point.
My personal feeling is that Metroid Prime was more of a first person adventure with an emphasis on exploration, whereas Metroid Prime 3 is more of a first person shooter with an emphasis on action.
Just my opinion...

Precisely my point. Different people can play the same game and have different experiences. Someone could find that the game, in their opinion, puts more of a focus on exploration and interacting with the environment, making it a first-person adventure to them, while someone else could find that combat and shooting is a larger focus in the game compared to the other Metroid Prime games, so much so that by definition, it would be a first-person shooter.
