Is Miracle Mask a good first Layton game?

Ive never played a Layton game before but considering all the praise Ive seen for the series Ive been considering choosing Miracle Mask for the free game for the 3DSXL/Luigis Mansion promo. Is it good for people getting into the series for the first time story wise and gameplay wise? I already own 3D Land so I am torn between Layton and Star Fox. Any advice?

Yes, I loved the game. As far as understanding the story, all I played before was last specter and had no problem with it, I'm sure it's fine as a first layton game. You might be confused with who Layton's companions are, but that shouldn't ruin the story.

I've played Mysterious Village, Diabolical Box, and part of Unwound Future. I was unaware Last Spector came before Miracle Mask-- am I going to be lost?RoniHot

You should play The Last Specter. It is not as good as Miracle Mask, but it is a fantastic game.
