We all know that Capcom has had trouble getting the Monster Hunter series going in the west, but is 4 Ultimate, coming off of the well received 3 and 3 Ultimate, and with increased brand awareness and consciousness, advertising, co-branding, and being one of the New 3DS launch titles, finally going to be the game that breaks that streak?

The game has received rave reviews everywhere, it's sold out everywhere, and basically, it appears that it's all around a hit- it even charted at #4 in the UK sales charts, after only three days of sales. Do Capcom finally have a hit on their hands?

Not at all

It's still very niche and Nintendo's damaging the 3DS brand hurts Monster Hunter even more

The sellouts are due to stores not taking on a lot of copies because how badly the last two sold.

I think the game will do well as long as Capcom understands it's place in the gaming world and offers discounts digitally and physically to make people pick it up for the first time.

Then that is 400,000 in three days, which is stupidly high still.

4U has total sales of 2.6 million in Japan iirc, meaning 400,000 for the west so far

I think It's too early to tell. But I'm going to say maybe a sleeper? I just don't think people in the west care about dedicated handhelds that much anymore.

I think if Capcom ever goes all-out and releases a full-fledged console Monster Hunter, people would love it. But I can see why Capcom doesn't. They already have a large established fanbase in Japan, and they prefer handhelds.

Monster Hunter has historically been a huge online game in Japan. The 3ds/wiiu Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate slowly gained attention in the USA, and I think the Monster Hunter 4 3ds xl Gamestop bundle blew it open.

The online works great, as long as you understand the base game going into it. The lobbies are sorted based on several factors, like what type of player you want to be with (noob or higher) and which monster you're looking to hunt. Once you've joined, the game plays basically the same as it would if you were playing by yourself, but you have up to three other hunters with you.

The online progression is separate from the single player. Your equipment and items and everything carry over, but you do different quests and rank up in a different way. Basically, you can jump back and forth whenever you want, depending on what kind of monsters you need to hunt to get the loot you need for your next upgrade.

There's no voice chat, but in a game like this, the pre-written chat blurbs are all you need, and you can access them pretty easily while you play.

It'll be a hit, or at least closer to being a hit, once it surpasses Tri's sales in the West. It definitely has potential to do so considering how popular the game is becoming, for MH standards.

MH4U deserves every bit of its praise and I seriously hope more people pick this game up. It's one of the very few recent Capcom sequels that has improved in every way possible from its predecessors and delivers far more content than most games in the industry nowadays. Understandably intimidating for newcomers and not everyone are expected to enjoy it, but it'll be a damn shame if this massively addicting, challenging, polished gem with impressive co-op multiplayer (for a handheld) continues to be categorized as niche game. So many people are missing out.

Has anyone has crashing issues in MH4U? I keep crashing out of game. Its the first time I have ever had this happen on 3ds.. Do I need to start the game over? It seems like no matter what I do from my most recent saved game it will crash in a few min....

@superbuuman: Too small even on the XL? :P

It's definitely more comfortable on consoles, but if they don't announce anything in the next 6 months in Japan, the chances of a Wii U port will be long dead.

Forget a port. Monster Hunter 3U looked bad on the WiiU because it was a portable port. We need a WiiU ONLY Monster Hunter. Not only would it look far better, it would have more weapons, more armor, more monsters, more than 1 NEW area, bigger environments, and more because it won't be limited to 3DS hardware.

Imagine this Monster Hunter on WiiU for example:

This is the type of Monster Hunter we need on WiiU. Not another Portable Port.

Yup.. yea you're probably right..:P

Yea of course it'd be even better if there's a Wii U version of Monster Hunter & not a 3DS port as this will always comes with 3DS limitation...SO unless Nintendo pony up the $$$$ & ask Capcom to specifically make a new Monster Hunter title for Wii U, I doubt Capcom would make one with their current financial situation. :P

Monster Hunter will never gain prominence in the West because it is, truly, the antithesis of Western gaming philosophy. Monster Hunter is grind. Anyone who says otherwise is deluding themselves. Having logged +240 hours on MH3U, I can honestly say it's not a hard game. It's just tedious. Western gamers, for the most party, aren't interested in grinding the same monster 12 times, for 40 minute fights each, to get a single scale that has a 3% change to drop after breaking their head or some nonsense like that.

Japan (and Korea, for that matter), are willing to put up more with grueling and unnecessary grind in lieu of an actual intellectual or mechanical challenge.

It must be doing pretty well in the US because it's sold out in most places on the net, and almost every local store in my area. I got lucky and snagged the collector's edition before they sold out on GS.

Looks like MH series is going mainstream.

With that said I hope Capcom will release future MH on more powerful platform.
