I can't wait 4 hours to play more Animal Crossing but I don't want to anything that might be bad for my battery. I'm thinking it's ok and I just want to make sure.

No I do it all the time, it even says in the manual that you can. Don't worry about it and play.

Playing while it charges won't hurt the battery life. The only thing that may hurt it is charging when the battery is near full, like more than half still. I never charge my DS unless the red light is on. I try to actually play it until it fully runs out before I charge it most of the time. This goes for anything with a built-in battery pack like cordless phones too. They will wear out a lot quicker if you charge them when they're still full. Something happens inside the battery that kinda sets up a wall, so basically if you do it enough, your battery won't charge past 1/4 of the way.

There are times when I've left my DS plugged in for days without turning it on and it still lasts a litle bit over 10 hours. (Regular DS btw)

If the battery gets to be pretty bad you can just buy a new one from Nintendo's site for around $20.

To everyone...

Nintendo DS battery is Lithium ion batteries.  Go on Wikipedia, and you'll see that this battery does NOT have a memory effect like NiCd which is what some people above were talking about. HOWEVER, Lithium ion batteries do lose the capacity after a year or so, 20% or so. So, if you want to keep up the DS life, then you should get new lithium batteries yearly or two years.

Do the research before telling people not to charge their batteries until the red light is on. There's no harm into playing it and having it plugged in.

That's wrong. With these Lithium-Ion batteries, the more often you charge and less empty you keep them is better for them. What you mention does not, and I repeat DOES NOT go for the battery type that DS uses. I can't believe how misinformed people are about this not-so-new battery technology.
So when you wait until the red light to charge your DS you are actually weakening the battery much faster than you would otherwise.

Glad to see others know what kills batteries. Just run them until they are dead folks, they last ALOT longer that way.

My boyfriend teases me when I have to plug it in to continue playing. He's like, "If you played it enough to kill the battery, don't you think you should give it a break for awhile???" ;)

The nice thing about DS's batteries is that they're super cheap.. and no where near the cost of replacing a cell phones battery :D. I was pleasantly surprised when at Walmart looking at accessories.

I used to think the same thing, but no it's not bad for it. It'll just take more time before it's fully charged.

No, not at all. In fact, Nintendo reccomends doing that when you are on Wifi with the DS since it costs more power.

From the site nintendo.com

Does the battery have to be totally depleted before I can charge it? We recommend charging the battery pack completely before its first use, or after you have not used it for a long time (the battery should be recharged at least once every six months). It takes about three hours--with the unit turned off--to fully charge the battery. Other than these two instances, you can recharge the battery pack at ANY TIME. The Nintendo DS Lite's power light will change from green to red when the battery life is around 30%. Note: The unit should not be left uncharged for long periods of time. Leaving it uncharged for long periods (months) may shorten the battery life. As with all batteries, the charge will slowly dissipate if not re-charged, even if it's not turned on.

If ninty is not lying to sell extra batteries faster, then consider those true.
