Unfortunately, we haven't been able to see a new IP created by Retro, but as far as being a critically acclaimed 1st party studio of Nintendo, do you think they hold up to what Rare did on the SNES and N64?

I'd say they're more talented, but rare was much more creative

Retro is hands down my favorite developer followed by BioWare, I can't wait to see what they can do with Wii U :) I still wouldn't say they are quite at what rare used to be on the SNES/N64. I think with the Wii U, they will surpass them :)

Nope, they are far better! And, they are first party, unlike Rare.

How are they better? They only made 4 games and 3 of them are the same type of game. The quality of the 4 games isn't any higher than Rareware's either.

Heh, as much as I enjoyed BanjoeKazooie (and 2) and Golden Eye, I've found much more enjoyment from Retro's games.

And retro's games are of higher quality imo.

Rare WAS better. Now Rare is terrible. And Retro is making great games. Today. Not as good as Rare on the N64. But I'm happy to be playing Retro games today.

Hey its this topic again lol. No they aren't, there will never be another Rare for Nintendo, that was lightning in a bottle. Retro is Nintendo's Retro, while Rare specialized in taking EAD's ideas and putting their own spin on them. Retro takes franchises and does that, while simultaneously adhering to what made those franchises great, not an easy feat. Both are/were great at different things, but if you ask which do I think could do better without Nintendo's guiding hand, well Rare has already failed at that, but I think Retro could do fine without Nintendo. Though, thankfully, since its a studio Nintendo built from the ground up, we wont ever have to see that.

Yep, and like Rare, they are starting to lose a lot of their talent sadly :(

Companies, rarely hold on to the same people, especially these days, where everyone is starting their own studio's to make Facebook games lol. Its not a big deal as one person or even ten people don't make the team. Obviously these people wouldn't be there forever, so studios have design philosophies, that covers the studio at large, instead of bending to the whims of a single/group person, so they aren't phased by people leaving.

They don't even fit the old Rare's shoes but the new Rare isn't really a gaming company anymore or so it seems to me.

No, Rare was over half of the N64's entire library. Retro doesn't have the man power to pump out that many games.

And some this year. The problem is, they were all major employees. Mike Wikan is probably the worst loss.

No the only why they could leave is if Nintendo pulls a Microsoft and grands them their freedom.

Rare left because they wanted Nintendo to purchase them but Nintendo refused.

Nintendo owns 100% of Retro Studios. Nintendo only owned 49% of Rareware.

I'm pretty sure Rare fell flat after a number of key members left to form Free Radical. They left Rare because they didn't want to work on a console they felt restricted their creativity. What was left of Rare clearly was of no value to Nintendo, and would go some way to explaining the immediate decline in the quality of the games they were developing.

Free Radical went under, that shows that a group of people leaving, despite their position don't make a studio. And Rare wanted to go multiplat, whether people left or not, Nintendo didn't want to buy the company, so MS picked it up the part that Rare owned and then Nintendo sold them the rest. And Rare's decline in quality is because of MS, not because people left the studio. Another example is how the God of War series went on fine without David Jaffe.

Hard to say really. Rare made so many good games in a short amount of time. Look at all the 64 games they made, and they were all pretty much awesome. Retro has made 4 awesome games over two generations. So I still gotta hand this over to Rare until Retro gets more quality games that finally gives them the status above Rare. If they keep this up for another couple generations (and maybe some unique IPs too) I'll see them above Rare.

Both great developers nonetheless (well referring to Rare when they were with Nintendo anyway).

Retro would need to make way more games to be as good as N64 Rare, and that probably isn't possible these days.

I don't really know why people even compare the two tbh. Retro made three alike games (Metroid Prime 1, 2 and 3) and a DKC remake in *two* generations whereas Rare made countless amazing and original games untill they were bought by Microsoft. They may be good devs but it's really just no comparison.

games are harder to make and more expensive this last gens than the N64 and snes days, developers can't do that much games anymore

Even for development costs of the time the number of high quality games rare made was incredible. It actually had alot to do with the fact that they constantly reused their assets and engines from other games. Retro develops all of their games from the ground up.

Marp? I highly doubt Retro threw out all their work on Metroid Prime each time they made a sequel??? That'd make no sense at all.

Retro is Nintendo's Retro. They have done absolutely amazing things with established Nintendo IP. Rare only did well when they created their own games.

They didn't, but the engine they used to make Echoes was a heavily modified version of the one they used to make Prime, where as Rare used the same unaltered engine to make several of their N64 platformers. I'll see if I can find some links.

You don't need to search for them because I can confirm it:

Goldeneye engine - Goldeneye, Perfect Dark

Diddy Kong Racing engine - Diddy Kong Racing, Jet Force Gemini, Micky's Speedway USA

Banjo-Kazooie engine - Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, Banjo-Tooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day

Blast Corps and Killer Instinct Gold use their own engines though.
