Unfortunately, we haven't been able to see a new IP created by Retro, but as far as being a critically acclaimed 1st party studio of Nintendo, do you think they hold up to what Rare did on the SNES and N64?

Retro is hands down my favorite developer followed by BioWare, I can't wait to see what they can do with Wii U :) I still wouldn't say they are quite at what rare used to be on the SNES/N64. I think with the Wii U, they will surpass them :)

Nope, they are far better! And, they are first party, unlike Rare.

How are they better? They only made 4 games and 3 of them are the same type of game. The quality of the 4 games isn't any higher than Rareware's either.
Heh, as much as I enjoyed BanjoeKazooie (and 2) and Golden Eye, I've found much more enjoyment from Retro's games.
And retro's games are of higher quality imo.
Companies, rarely hold on to the same people, especially these days, where everyone is starting their own studio's to make Facebook games lol. Its not a big deal as one person or even ten people don't make the team. Obviously these people wouldn't be there forever, so studios have design philosophies, that covers the studio at large, instead of bending to the whims of a single/group person, so they aren't phased by people leaving.Yep, and like Rare, they are starting to lose a lot of their talent sadly :(

What do you mean? o_o All 4 games they've developed so far were brilliant.Yep, and like Rare, they are starting to lose a lot of their talent sadly :(

They don't even fit the old Rare's shoes but the new Rare isn't really a gaming company anymore or so it seems to me.

And some this year. The problem is, they were all major employees. Mike Wikan is probably the worst loss.
Hope not, cuz that means they'll leave later. :PZumaJones07No the only why they could leave is if Nintendo pulls a Microsoft and grands them their freedom.
Rare left because they wanted Nintendo to purchase them but Nintendo refused.
Nintendo owns 100% of Retro Studios. Nintendo only owned 49% of Rareware.
Hard to say really. Rare made so many good games in a short amount of time. Look at all the 64 games they made, and they were all pretty much awesome. Retro has made 4 awesome games over two generations. So I still gotta hand this over to Rare until Retro gets more quality games that finally gives them the status above Rare. If they keep this up for another couple generations (and maybe some unique IPs too) I'll see them above Rare.
Both great developers nonetheless (well referring to Rare when they were with Nintendo anyway).
I don't really know why people even compare the two tbh. Retro made three alike games (Metroid Prime 1, 2 and 3) and a DKC remake in *two* generations whereas Rare made countless amazing and original games untill they were bought by Microsoft. They may be good devs but it's really just no comparison.
games are harder to make and more expensive this last gens than the N64 and snes days, developers can't do that much games anymoreI don't really know why people even compare the two tbh. games are harder to make and more expensive this last gens than the N64 and snes days, developers can't do that much games anymore Even for development costs of the time the number of high quality games rare made was incredible. It actually had alot to do with the fact that they constantly reused their assets and engines from other games. Retro develops all of their games from the ground up.[QUOTE="nameless12345"]

I highly doubt Retro threw out all their work on Metroid Prime each time they made a sequel??? That'd make no sense at all.[QUOTE="nameless12345"]

They didn't, but the engine they used to make Echoes was a heavily modified version of the one they used to make Prime, where as Rare used the same unaltered engine to make several of their N64 platformers. I'll see if I can find some links.locopatho

You don't need to search for them because I can confirm it:
Goldeneye engine - Goldeneye, Perfect Dark
Diddy Kong Racing engine - Diddy Kong Racing, Jet Force Gemini, Micky's Speedway USA
Banjo-Kazooie engine - Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, Banjo-Tooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day
Blast Corps and Killer Instinct Gold use their own engines though.
