I haven't played a Super Mario game since I was really young, other than downloading the Super Mario on the Wii, so I was really excited after watching the video review for Super Paper Mario. Another side scrolling game, which I love, and 3D, it sounded like a nice combination and the gameplay looked interesting and fun. In addition, in the review, they claimed that it had a really good storyline, although the pacing was a little off at the end of the game. I think storylines are not necessary for short games that focus on gameplay only such as Geometry Wars, however a solid storyline is crucial for long running games. Super Paper Mario has a pretty long storyline, but man oh man, is the story ever so light. That's not to say there are no clever metaphor's or word play, but overall the story is pretty much written at a 3rd grade reading level, which is something I wasn't warned of in the video review (can't speak for the written review).

Needless to say, about a couple of levels into the game I could no longer stomach reading the story and found myself constantly pressing buttons just to get through the dialog. I LOVED the side scrolling aspect, the 3D switching, puzzle solving, boss fighting and overall gameplay, but the dialog just killed the game for me. Am I the only one?

i liked the dialog but i still just wanted to get throught to the gameplay at some points. i thought the dialog was great in paper mario 2 but super paper mario kind of put too much in. it still made the game seem more deep and enjoyable.

It's written on two levels. If you only see one of them it probably means you're not ready for the other.

story =/= dialog. I thought the story was nothing special, but the dialog was pretty clever at times. (Not to say all the time)

There were some funny takes on various aspects of life and some clever metaphors, but overall, it was just a little too simple brah.

Be grateful! Some games have REALLY REALLY bad dialouge (looking at you Resident Evil: Deadly Silence!) and by my standard, SPM was a great break from the system. Sure it was kind of kiddy but it was also clever. Not laugh-out-loud funny just clever.

that's correct sir, many moments had me smiling at just how funny it was. Lots of innuendos that were great

well saying that having too much dialog makes it for adults doesn't make sence but the fact the dialog suck could be a reason for "constantly pressing buttons just to get through the dialog", for this game to be good they should eliminate all the story it's too childy to be romantic and it's unoriginal

This thread is fun because there are comments on reading levels, and no one has spelled dialogue properly yet.

There are two spellings for the word. Dialog is one of them.

"What am I blind? Shut up!" -- Bowser

I love SPM and I'm an adult. My parents also have a SPM save file on my Wii and they're in their late 50s. I liked the story of the game, but I found myself rooting (mostly for my own reasons) for Count Bleck. I'm a RPG fan, so the amount of text in this game was no big deal. I mean, read the reports in MGS: Twin Snakes and then come back to me looking for text :P

"overall the story is pretty much written at a 3rd grade reading level"

Well that's probably to do with them wanting to appeal to as many people as they can. If they make the game dialog too difficult to read, they might lose some of their audience.

I havent played it so im not going to vote... I have only played the first one and it was pretty easy my kid sister had a much more challenging time with it, it was a great game for her and an alright one for me. If this is anything like the first then its better for kids but fun for everyone
