Of course it's not just that, but the similarity has arrisen in the past. You know, people say the GB was a portable NES. And that the GBA was a portable SNES. And that the DS was a portable N64. So it's logical to make the similarity (at least in "power" if you may) of the 3DS being a portable GCN.
The 3DS lacks the c-stick. The gamecube also didnt have the ability to take pictures, didnt have Mii's, didnt have an online store, didnt have internal flash memory. Also, the 3DS cant play Gamecube games, so I would say, just like the person above me, that its not a gamecube.

I almost completely agreed with you, but I have to argue that the Atari Lynx IS a portable banana. Just ask the Elephant.
From a tech specs point of view it has a multi-core CPU at a higher clock speed (but is ARM instead of IBM) it has a lot more RAM (128MB vs 40MB) and I know the 3DS has about 6MB VRAM. I'd say the 3DS is far and away more powerful than the Cube in a lot of areas but weaker in others. Challenges Wii in some areas, falls short in others. But its still awesome nonetheless. There's no C-Stick, but the touch screen works much better.
Graphics wise it's the same, but that said, so is the Wii graphics. GC = Wii in terms of graphics. I go out on a limb here and say it's closer to the wii than the GC because the 3DS has controls beyond the buttons just like how the wii has motion controls. (touchscreen = wii pointing, gyroscope = motions, etc)

You clearly havent seen RE: Revelations... It's an optical illusion :P Honestly, though, if a zombie comes close you can see the blocky textures and the horrible 'jagged edges' the PSP also had.
